Probably pointless to X post, BUT I'm doing from now on. Chug goat cock LJ Is anyone actually surprised by livejournal right now? They showed their spots when they took advertisers, then again when they had sponsored communities, and again with strikethrough07 and again now. They don't like us. They will never like us. To them we're a bunch of creepy women who get their jollies from creepy unladylike things, and while they're happy to have our money they really, really don't want US. And really? fuck them.
I realize people are resistant to journalfen, in large part because they host fandom wank. But honestly? I think that's an OUTSTANDING argument for moving to journalfen. The owners of JF are not wild about FW - and in fact the mods have run afoul of them on several occasions. BUT the owners of JF are committed to the idea of protecting speech - even speech they don't particularly like - as they have shown over and over again. They defend FW and journalfen against weekly complaints, internets lawyering and DOS attacks. Fandom wank - and again, they don't particularly LIKE FW - costs them money, time and aggravation - and yet, they still host them. Because they truly believe in defending speech. Even yours.
Journalfen’s owners are slashers. It was created as a journaling service FOR fen. They're not going to squick out and suspend you over a little Harry/Draco/Squid action. No, really. They might even write a sequel.
Joining JF is actually pretty easy. It's $15 you get a TON of userpics. Since the link isn't working, email Robin (she's nice, Michael Biehn fan): robin AT slashcity DOT com OR Bonnie: zorrorojo AT cox DOT net and ask them for a journal.
Go! Join! They're really lovely and journalfen really is OUR journaling service.

Oh, I wouldn't go as far as to say that SA!LJ considers fandomers as a bunch of creepy women etc.
They do consider fandom as "not our advertisers" though, which is just as bad given their mindset.

The breastfeeding idiocy seemed to say, hey! we're basically uncomfortable with womennudityickygirlparts and were going to make up laws to justify our own fastidiousness! Which really isn't the attitude I want from the people who ultimately have their greasy fingers on the ban button.
I agree that they think it's unappealing to advertisers, but again I think thats an assumption based on their prejudices and not borne from actual market research. I see a lot of that in my day-to-day: exec likes blond busty girls, he assumes everyone does as well, we hire ONLY blond busty girls to carry out promotions. Sales drop in various niches: latino women, G&L etc. Exec cannot fathom why.

I don't write a lot of fic, but I think this last move by LJ has made me quietly decide that I'll never post fic to LJ ever again, because what I've written in the past has been almost exclusively for anime fandoms, and in anime, once you're over 18, you're practically middle aged. You have to think of age differently in anime fandoms. Also, they're fucking cartoons, and I am putting them into entirely fictional situations, so I have trouble seeing the big fucking deal about it. Maybe I'll convert the sock I've got here to match my LJ name into a fic account or something, I don't know.
I think I've also quietly decided that I'm not renewing my paid membership over there, either. They obviously don't really want me there, so they obviously don't really want my money. Screw them.

That's where I am as well. The whole thing just seems like incredibly bad form on their part, but since paid subscriptions aren't the hand feeding them anymore it's hardly surprising. They really just want our eyeballs and content at this point.
I've been saying that for years and others in fandom have berated me for it. I wonder what planet these people are on.
I stopped paying for a journal there (after many years of constantly paid use) because I'd rather my money go to something better.

I think it's just becoming harder and harder to ignore. Bravo that you saw the warning signs! Hopefully people will agree with you soon.
ohh but how I wish I was wrong, really... :(
My LJ time ends on the 25th, I think... so I may get a JF paid account in August. =)

YAY! yeah, I think I'll put my LJ paid time into a JF perm account fund for when they do those again.
What I've been saying since Strikethrough '07 is that: a) it is true that they have apologized, but b) it is also true that they have not taken steps to fix the corporate culture that caused the problem. Indeed, they don't seem to know why the failure happened in such an odious way and why this is important to their consumers. This leaves the door open for future Strikethroughs, and I see this prediction is sadly coming true. I joined Livejournal in 2002, attracted to its sense of community and lack of overbearing corporate culture. Those terms changed, and I gave Six Apart a fair chance to display "if it ain't broke" methodology that made the property so lucrative in the first place. They failed, and now I'm completely migrating everything to Journalfen. Corporations - which Livejournal now is, as opposed to the community it was - have the right to determine what they will and will not host; but they do not become immune from criticism or from people deciding, as consumers, to take their money elsewhere. Which I did. I paid for a premium account - I don't need the premium features, but I support Journalfen. They haven't lied to us or pretended to be something they're not.
I also have a Blogspot, but their partnership with Google and their terms are pretty clear. I don't mind that I can't post anything objectionable because they've never attempted to deceive the Blogspot/Blogger community in the time I've been with them.

it is also true that they have not taken steps to fix the corporate culture that caused the problem. Yes, I agree completely. I think I may set up an RSS feed of my JF to keep up w/ my LJ friends, and move the bulk of my activity here. It will take time, but I think it'll be well worth it. In the mean time, I've set up a few comm things to make it easier for people - want to help?
What I'm doing is using the Google Reader RSS function to keep up, and I'm finding it much more user-friendly than the LJ features.
What comms are you setting up? I'm not sure if JF has this particular feature, but LJ has a Community Quest and Community Promo community. I'd love to see that here so people know that JF is more than just Fandom_Wank (which I love, but let's roll out the red carpet for other stuff!). I'd be happy to mod or co-mod communities having to do with celtic music, drumming, library students, academics, medieval history, Dante, and World of Warcraft, but I'm unsure how to create them. What other help are you thinking of? |
