Oh god, so tired.
After my meeting/job extravaganza I had all this energy and decided that taking the dog hiking would be a good idea. Actually, back up – I also found out I was working at 6am tomorrow (Never, ever do favors for friends. Ever. No really, when friends ask you to cover for them? Tell them your granny DIED or else you’ll be getting up at 4:30 AfuckingM to hurry up and hold an extension cord) so I thought a nice hike might tire the insane monster out.
Well, having such a happy excess of energy I decide to go the DOUBLE hard way: down the western ridge and up the eastern one. That’s about 4-5 miles with about 1000 foot incline. Well somehow* I ended up on the lower canyon trail. Somewhere down there was a choice between left and right, and I took the wrong one.
It LOOKED like a trail. It was in fact a mud slide from our recent rains, more or less hardened and cleverly disguised as a trail. And so up I went. I should mention, I have this pathological drive to NEVAR QUIT. So up and up, and it keeps getting more and more steep. This is an off-the-beaten path anyhoo, so literally there were men lurking in the bushes. So NOT kidding. I think maybe they were communing with nature, but still as a woman if you’re hiking in the wild park and you see a man lurking in the bushes? You’re not going to be happy.
So up and up, and it keeps getting steeper and steeper.
This picture DOES NOT do it justice. It was steeper than any path I’ve ever been on. If I was skiing it would be a black diamond. I realized eventually that NO it wasn’t a path, but then I did that weigh-y thing. On the one hand I can climb down (past creepy bush men who I *hope* were doing Yoga. Otherwise those contorted positions are even weirder) OR keep going-how-much-higher-can-it-be?
And because it was a dried mudslide the earth was unstable. As I got closer to the top I was on a 80+ degree angle. I couldn’t get a firm footing anywhere, I kept sliding. My poor dog:
all he wanted was to lie down, but he’d sit to rest bracing his paws and slowly slide down. I was crawling on all fours, digging into loose dirt with my hand, hanging onto roots when I was lucky enough to find one. I LIKE rock climbing, but DAMN I hadn’t intended on doing that today.
We finally get to the top and realized we’d climbed all the way to cloud point. Probably a good 600 ft of mudslide.
Friday I did a party for the Tom of Finland foundation.
I had fun. It was held at Tom’s Silver/wood house, and was a temple to leather and pretty boys. My favorite was the pissing fountain that was activated by flushing the toilet.
Then Saturday (I think) I was randomly on the Warner Ranch and saw this:
Which I had to snap a pix of. It seemed do forlorn rusting away in the corner.
*because I’m an IDIOT who apparently thinks looking up a map on the internet = knowing where I’m going

The guys lurking about in the bushes thing?
That right there is why I never go hiking anymore. I don't have a dog to sic on them, so unless I'm with friends, or armed (or both) I don't go exploring as much as I used to. Probably for the best, I've got a bum knee and the incline you described would have killed me. All that loose dirt? I never would have made it to the top. :(
Also, if you ever go hiking off the 2 in Angeles Crest, beware. Because the guys you see in the bushes may be pot farmers, and they will be armed. An old boyfriend and I were hiking up there, and ran into a couple of guys. They pulled a crossbow. He pulled out his pistol. They backed off and we left as fast as possible.
Fortunately for me, there is a huge park by my house, complete with lakes, bike trails, golfing, and a nature center area to go hiking in. And the only weirdo you might see lurking around in the bushes would be me.
Yup, you just said why I was forbidden from going anywhere off our OWN ranch even with a dog, a horse, and a shotgun. Right down with the bum knee :( and it sucks cuz I love going exploring in the mountains around me! Nothing against pot farmers? but when they squat on neighbors ranches or the public lands and are armed I concede they're too dangerous to have around.

Oh I have a healthy fear of Angeles Crest - its too often the dumping ground for killers, aside from the homicidal pot farmer issue. That's BIG problem in Hawaii too - and not publicized because they don't want to scare the tourists.
GOD a crossbow! That's so random!
These trails you've been on are really nice!
I've only been to Laurel Canyon Park... or whatever it's called... Up there off Laurel Canyon XD There's a lake with ducks, which we used to take my daughter to go visit, and some kind of historical center? Yeah.
But those guys lurking would definitely give me some pause.

It's a nice hike, especially if you have a dog because it is off leash.
I don't know the Laurel Canyon park! It's off Laurel in the hills? Like near Mullholland?
I think I may be calling it by the wrong name, and possibly even the wrong street, but the park I remember was on the Valley side of Mulholland. I'll ask my ex-husband about it this weekend though... I'd like to go back myself.
I was lucky a few years ago that they had some midnight hikes in one of the public lands near me. The BIL took me and there was a group so we felt safe. WOW, I want more midnight hikes!!
Whew, your knees must be good cuz anything over a 20% grade and I HAVE to bow out or blow out a kneecap. And I get tired of putting them back in myself.

The tree people do a moonlight hike here in LA, but they got some celeb attention and its ridiculous to join now. I remember when I was a kid we went to Austria for my schools ski holiday, and we took lanterns up the mountain. I *think* the idea was we were going to slide/toboggan down, but the guide got us good and lost so we basically ended up trudging circles around in the snow all night. It was beautiful though, frostbite and all.
