The guys lurking about in the bushes thing?

That right there is why I never go hiking anymore. I don't have a dog to sic on them, so unless I'm with friends, or armed (or both) I don't go exploring as much as I used to. Probably for the best, I've got a bum knee and the incline you described would have killed me. All that loose dirt? I never would have made it to the top. :(

Also, if you ever go hiking off the 2 in Angeles Crest, beware. Because the guys you see in the bushes may be pot farmers, and they will be armed. An old boyfriend and I were hiking up there, and ran into a couple of guys. They pulled a crossbow. He pulled out his pistol. They backed off and we left as fast as possible.

Fortunately for me, there is a huge park by my house, complete with lakes, bike trails, golfing, and a nature center area to go hiking in. And the only weirdo you might see lurking around in the bushes would be me.

Yup, you just said why I was forbidden from going anywhere off our OWN ranch even with a dog, a horse, and a shotgun. Right down with the bum knee :( and it sucks cuz I love going exploring in the mountains around me! Nothing against pot farmers? but when they squat on neighbors ranches or the public lands and are armed I concede they're too dangerous to have around.

Oh I have a healthy fear of Angeles Crest - its too often the dumping ground for killers, aside from the homicidal pot farmer issue. That's BIG problem in Hawaii too - and not publicized because they don't want to scare the tourists.
