Bookshelf - finished at last.

Of course it still needs to be dressed, varnished etc (on a sunny day, so I don't die of varnish fumes)... but it is, essentially, complete.

What I did with my Evening

You will need: One 1.2m x 29cm plank, one 900x19mm dowelling rod, some right angle brackets and long screws. Drill and screwdriver, saw and clamps.

Cut a 290x290mm square from one end (I really need some sort of guide; the cut was a bit crooked) and use that as a base. Mark off halfway, preposition two brackets and fix the base to the remainder of the plank at right angles. Add two more brackets (space them by eye; the exact measurements are not important). Mount the dowelling at the other end as a T with long wood screws (about 50mm will do) - I had difficulty tapping the screws and had to go to drill bits of increasing size before I could get them in easily; 4mm ultimately did the trick. I put two screws in 50mm from the centreline and two more a further 60mm out again.
Cut for picture size )
Simple, isn't it?

Trousers, underwear and socks hang on the left; shirt, singlet and tie hang on the right; and all is in readiness for getting dressed speedily the next morning without rifling through cupboards and drawers in a panic.

And now I am making banana muffins. Twenty minutes to dessert, and my reward for a job well done. Yum!

ETA: I got the muffins right this time. Fifteen minutes, and they're delightfully moist and fluffy! The only problem now, of course, is not eating them all!

Weekend - Moving In.

This weekend I bit the bullet and decided that Saturday night had been the last night I would spend in the student house.

I have thus been moving my stuff over bit by bit, and though this has gone nowhere near as fast as I anticipated it would (I've been dead tired this weekend, sleeping in and crashing during the day a lot), my own little house is now effectively fully functional.

Being the adventurous sort, I looked at the broken remains of my desk this afternoon (finally done in by the stress of moving; you served me well, faithful desk) and wondered if, rather than tossing it out, it might not be able to be fixed. Off to the hardware store, therefore, for 90 degree brackets, screws... and a drill. Not an expensive one; just enough to drill pilot holes through particle board and put the screws in, and do odd jobs around the house from time to time. Oh, and some screwdriver heads and drill bits too.

Then to the discount shop across the car park, where neat little DIY shelves and cupboards needing only a screwdriver are sold. One lot are modular, with little metal studs to hold them in place as you stack them on top of each other. I bought one unit which is basically an open-ended cube, and another with two drawers, and that will be my bedside cabinet. I assembled the cube tonight, but the cupboards are a more drawn out affair.

Repair of the desk will be waiting a couple of days more, I think. At least till tomorrow night, because the powerpack needs charging, but there are the cupboards to do as well. So the desk might well be waiting until Wednesday.

Oh, what else? An ironing pile chin-high, boxes still strewn about the floor - I decided that actually being in the place was the only thing which would really motivate me to get it in order. I aim to have that finished by the end of this week, and then I'll see about a target shoot on Saturday or Sunday.

Crossing my fingers that they approve my leave...
