I myself have always personally not been able to pronounce yaoi and similarly shounen-ai (at least the larger majority of it), not because I am anti-Japanese in any way or to any degree whatsoever, but more rather because I'm NOT anti-Japanese. In order to prevent to bringing on some exclamations of "you said what now?" accompanied by arched eyebrows in my general direction as a result of that statement, please permit me to explain exactly what I meant by that.

You see it's in fact because I'm so concerned about Japanese culture and the Japanese language, that I tend to find myself put off, offended and sometimes outright disgusted by the very unrealistic pronunciations of Japanese words out there.

The creators and writers behind manga/anime series (who are more often than not Japanese, and after all yaoi/shounen-ai stories are written, drawn, and aimed predominantly at Japanese girls and women), and especially their fangirls, tend to place more emphasis on words like "kawaii, bishounen" and oh you know what, pretend I drivelled on like that for another eight years and we'll call it even, okay? Thanks, man. Next time I promise, I'll cover for you.

Look, people. I thought I made it perfectly clear that I did not say you weren't allowed to disagree with me or that it makes you stupid or bad for not agreeing with me, and for that matter I didn't say OMG PLEEZ DONT RESPOND!! either. I actually encouraged responses from people, wherein they share of their own thoughts and opinions on what I expressed in my "thoughts on Japanese" two-parter, no matter how much they may prove to differ from my own. I just didn't expect there to be so much damn wankyness in the responses I did end up recieving.

I refer to people throwing blind accusations at me such as "I dont't approve of JAPAN in general" and that I must be on some "high horse with a pole up my ass" who feels she's on some moral high ground above everyone else who happens to like Japan, accusations which were entirely uncalled for and showed blatant disregard for my own personal thoughts and feelings which I feel I clearly expressed. And I can assure I would not have done the same to anyone else here, regardless of how much I happened to disagree with them personally.

I wouldn't resort to immaturely calling names, making accusations and generalisations and jumping to conclusions about what kind of person I am as an individual, and how I feel towards other things like het and regular live-action shot porn. I tried my best in response to explain my stance on these things, why I don't like unrealistic depictions of any kind of island nation. It's a basic rule in good geography, and I thought I illustrated that point quite well. Please try and understand that. That is how I *truly* feel, and it's certainly not at all that I do not approve of Japan or anything that's islandy in general. At least that's what I've found, and I have found many people happen to feel the same. But regardless...

(Pretend I inserted another sixty-five pages of crap here)

Considering the phrase that yaoi comes from, I never understood why people would pronounce it as yow-ee. It's yama nashi oshi nashi imi nashi. Wouldn't it stand to reason that the separate parts would be pronounced separately? Then again, I'm probably giving them too much credit...

I don't think so. The teacher spelled it with only one "o," as opposed to, say, "kooi," which means "far" I think.

"kooi" = deed; action or goodwil; kindness, depending on which kanji you use. (Random House J-E/E-J Dictionary, 1995)

You're thinking of "tooi" (far).

In fact, if a Japanese person wants to say, "That's some good yaoi!" there is a danger of bisecting the skull at the jawline. From the inside.

Go ahead, tell people you want to read some nice "dolphin" stories and see what that gets you.
