9:55am: Encyclopedia Dramatica is near death...

... and needs your moneys.

http://encyclopediadramatica.com/donate.html

We hate to interrupt your lol times, but we need a little bit of help. You see, lately Encyclopedia Dramatica has fallen upon some hard times. The costs to maintain the site have gone up considerably and advertising revenue is way down. Bandwidth and new hardware need to be purchased and we need your help to make these purchases. We here at encyclopedia dramatica enjoy the offbeat humor as much as you do, but we also enjoy supporting a platform that allows people to speak their minds freely. Don't you think that it is time to give back to ED? A small donation can go a long way. We will return the site back to its normal state in less than 24 hours, but without enough help we will be shutting it down.

Okay, remind me. I've modded and killed 5 RPGs so far. So, starting a new one...bad, right?

But I'm jonesing for so bad and miss my characters. And wouldn't a Harry Potter universe wehre the war has dragged on into a sort of Cold War be awesome? Intrigue, politicking, magical spies, double and triple agents, magical mutually assured destruction oh help me I suck at modding and don't really have the time.

5:02pm: I'm out of books to read

Just recently saw and read the first movie and the first book of Sergei Lukyanenko's Night Watch/DayWatch (Nochnoy Dozor) series. I have to wait till my brother finishes the second book, so I am in desparate need of some good, novel based fanfic in English, Hungarian or Hebrew. I know there is some out there in Russian and I believe there must be some in languages I can understand. After all the first generation of Harry Potter fanfic writers must like Nochnoy Dozor!

9:05am: Woes.

The fucking raccoon has to go. It has decided to move from obnoxiousness - I can deal with plants getting trampled and my fish tubs being stirred up - to out-right destruction. Woke up this morning to find my tomato plant pretty much shredded and half-corpses of almost ripe and green tomatoes strewn across the deck. And the coup de grace was the shit on the steps. Motherfucker is getting trapped and moved five miles away. I am not pleased.

Also discovered last night that my squash plants problems are being caused squash vine borers. Thankfully, it's just the plants in the back so I should get some squash this year. It's still really frustrating. I dont' remember having these sorts of problems before, but I was probably just lucky.

Lost a couple of fish recently. One was a serpae tetra that must have swallowed some gravel or something. I knew that one was coming. The surprises were Roslin (who may have been eaten by the fucking raccoon) and my female rainbow darter. The new catfish still have ich spots although the killies seem to have fought it off for the moment.

Work has been frustrating. IT fuckwittery and a new supervisor that likes to send out emails and hold meetings that are full of business prattle and meaningless pap, none of which actually helps me do my job and mostly makes me hate everything.

So yeah, not the greatest week.

11:29pm: Role Play Anyone?

So I have this idea for a game but I'm unsure if only someone like myself (a huge history geek) would like. Basically I've set up an original RPG on a pro-board of an RPG that takes place during the Boshin war of Japan. Since y'know you've got plenty of samurai fighting each other along with some assassins and possibly ninjas thrown in. Realistic as one can be however, so no magic or mutants and the like. So basically it be a pan-fandom, AU, with some RPF thrown in (since you can play historical figures too) along with original characters.

Anyone )

I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested in something like this.

Back when I was still a 'mouse, I remember reading some wank about a person who wrote an essay about Elijah Wood. The writing seemed to concern itself mostly with how perfect and whole the hobbit was, and how the rest of us were so broken and pathetic.

9:11am: Our new rainbow overlords

Here we have yet another tale of video game fanboy entitlement, but one that doesn't involve the ongoing Console Wars for a change. In fact, the game involved is a PC/Mac title: Blizzard's highly-anticipated Diablo III.

It all started with an online petition calling for "Renewed artistic direction for Diablo 3". According to the petitioners, the Diablo universe calls for gothic, dark realism, but the new game's art direction is "cartoon'ish" and reminiscent of the Warcraft titles, with color and variety and *gasp* RAINBOWS! What they want is:

Teh Gothicness, basically )

Rounding out the petition are several links to images depicting what Diablo III should look like. In short, everything should look a lot more grey and brown.

MTV Multiplayer later posts an interview with Diablo III's lead designer in which these fan mockups are discussed and criticized at length. For example, here's what the designer had to say about this one, depicting what the petitioners want in terms of lighting:

The key thing to remember here is that this has been Photoshopped. This isn’t created by the engine. Though it looks really cool, it’s almost impossible to do in a 3D engine because you can’t have lighting that smart and run on systems that are reasonable. If we could do that, we probably would in a few of the dungeons.

Now in terms of the actual texturing, this texturing, where they grayed out everything and it’s very flat and the monsters are all kind of a similar tone — that does not play well. It’s very boring to run through more than a couple of times, and it’s very difficult to tell creatures apart and pop them out of the environment. So those things don’t really work for us. A lot of the lighting stuff I think is very cool, but it’s also not very doable for us.

The rainbow (or lack thereof, rather) in one of the altered screenshots is also discussed:

More rain? It’s funny because if watch later on in the [debut gameplay] video, we have more rain. It is much stronger than that. I’m sure they got rid of the rainbow. Yeah, rainbow — gone. I think our artist just put [the rainbow] in there because they knew that’d be controversial. And I’m sure they were like, “Well we’ll see how far we can push it.”

There is anger and annoyance in the comments, representing both sides of the argument:

COLOR IS BAD! COLOR IS NOT BAD! )

And of course, there's the obligatory Penny Arcade comic.

ETA: So it seems Blizzard is now looking for a new art director for Diablo III after their previous one quit. Fanboys, now's your chance!

So I got this friend. I've actually probably mentioned her a bunch of times, but always under a different name because of poor planning she has eight billion and is deeply ashamed of what she does on all of these.

She makes me rp Heroes stuff with her (I'm Mohinder D:) to the point where I think I've developed Stockholm Syndrome. Did I mention she's a Sylar fangirl? She camped out for the Heroes panel. I told her I was going to write this stuff about her, which is why she said I had to put her under a new pseudonym.

But what I'm getting around to saying is, Sylar isn't an exception. She watches Withnail and I, Withnail is sexy sexy to her. Sylar is dreamy. There's other examples I totally can't remember right now. Oh yeah, Snape's a woobie. I'm pretty sure when we finally meet, she's going to go all Hannibal Lecter on me.

And she's been watching Dark Knight more than once.

From Gmail:

Flammis: Joker/Batman forever
John: you're so creepy
Flammis: :-D
You complete me!
John: batman/gordon, ho
Flammis: That too
Batman knows he doesn't deserve Gordon so he totally uses Joker on the side.
John: no flammis no!
Flammis: and this delights Joker to no end. :D
John: stop making me picture it!
Flammis: He totally is all "GORDON!" while the Joker cackles maniacally.
John: D:

--

John: do I have to put you under a pseudonym if I post about you in my journal?
Flammis: Yes
John: "This is my pal... Bobo"
ooh
what names can I call you
Flammis: Flammis works.
John: what's the smush name for Mohinder/Maya
Flammis: D:
John: Mayinder?
Flammis: I, I will kill you.

please note, I love her dearly. She's totes my bff.

3:45pm: Ginny and Ron vs. Hermione! Round 27496.

For years Ginny and Ron fans have been whinging all over the web about the film and promotional treatment of their characters. For a short while at least, it seems they can take a break from whinging while Hermione fans pick up the gauntlet.

Recently a teaser trailer was finally released, and all were joyous! The trailer mainly featured young!Voldie, Dumbledore and Harry, but there were snippets of Ginny and Ron. Alas! There was no Hermione. The insult continued recently when some promos were released, featuring Ron and Harry, but still no Hermione. The final straw came when some pictures of foreign merchandise were released, featuring new pics of Ron and Ginny, but nothing new for Hermione. As well as some trading cards featuring Ron and Harry.

There were some small signs of dissent in the posts linked above, but it never really went anywhere. The Leaky Cauldron was not so lucky, maybe because they didn't link to the old pic of Hermione. There, some of the Hermione fans rage and the Ginny and Ron fans rub it in.

As I can't link direct to comments, I'll copy paste the juiciest from each page, so this will be quite a long report.

But I'll leave you with my personal favourite!

Who needs to be entertained by the HBP film? Reading all these comments have me rolling on the floor in laughter! Remember, children, they’ve only released the “Teaser” trailer… obviously, teasing releases “the Dark Lord ” in some of you. Wicked.

So True!

Thank you to the Mouse on wank_report for dropping this in my lap.

8:40am: Nuked the Fridge

As a result of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, we have a new version of "jumped the shark": "nuked the fridge."

Personally, I agree with the OP: the scene in Temple of Doom where Indy parachutes out of a plane in an inflatable raft, toboggans down a mountainside in it, and then survives it falling off a 1,000-foot cliff into a raging river, was much more ridiculous.

1:22pm: The aftermath of "Breaking Dawn"

We are falling behind on the Sparkledammerung, you guys. Previously: Twilight had its own Carpet Book. Fresh off the truck:

>> Don't Burn It, Return It!

Just got back from Borders, where they took back my book with no problem. Got into a discussion with the cashier about how I was the 15th (!!!) person to bring my book back today. Seems like many customers felt that SM was not true to her characters and her self created Twilight world, and are calling foul.
(See also: Half.com's BD listing; more anecdata at iworkatborders and ONTD).

>> Two new communities are up, mmmcradle (specifically protesting spoiler )) and whysofailsmeyer, and those are just the ones I know of.

>> Epic ONTD post is epic, complete with macros and Dark Knight rewrites (ALFREDS EYES WERE A BUTTERY, BURNING GOLD; HIS PERFECT FACE ALMOST SEVERE WITH THE DEPTH OF HIS EMOTION AS HE STARED INTO MY EYES AND SHOUTED "NEVAH").

I hear the Twilight Moms board is supposed to open back up today (apparently Stephenie Meyer asked her fan boards to go on hiatus prior to the book release...?), so that should be interesting. ETA: The Twilight Moms loved it! Bless. ETA 2: ... And so it begins. ETA 3: And continues! ETA 4: NO DISSENT!

ETA 5: It was a social experiment test, Twihards, and you failed it! Also: Godwin's. Also-also: She couldn't have been referencing Lolita... could she?

ETA 6: OH SHI--

ETA 7: Alleged MySpace defriending by the author!

ETA 8: A new letter-writing campaign: EDIT MOAR; a J/B shipper decides to rewrite the book.

By the way, you guys, if something else happens, feel free to post a new entry. I'll be over here battening down the LJ hatches.

So anyway, my truck.

MY TRUCK. ;-;

I exaggerated a bit on the whole 'exploding' thing. What actually happened was that a wheel blew and the truck ended up flipping off the road upside down, whereupon the cab crushed.

I was in another country at the time. My cousin who was driving was fine except a gouged up hand and the other cousin had to wear a neckbrace for a few days. The cousin has witnesses who only noticed him driving in the first place because he was the first person they'd seen all day on that road who wasn't speeding. So that's good. The truck's going (we assume) to be written off, so we're going into town next week to pick out a new ford ranger.

Poor Doktor Von Truck.

I admit it, I'm a twilight h8tr. I do think books that end with the stupid annoying 'heroine' getting married to the 'prince/glowing vampire/this unattainable guy' while just continuing to be stupid and irritating deserved to be mocked relentlessly.

I hate Rose for being an entitled cunt and leading people to believe that being an entitled cunt gets you rewarded. Much as I loathe this story and how it leads people to think it's ok to give up your inner self for 'love'. The girl is pathetic and plays on that patheticness. I don't like people who use others and manipulate others in this way and it irks me to see it glorified.

Gah, no wonder I never read YA fiction when I was a kid. If it was all like this romance bullshit I'd have given up reading altogether.

So there was a "Breaking Dawn" party at the local bookstore last night. One of my kids went with some friends even though they don't read the books. They just wanted to watch the show (and win Twilight-branded Godiva chocolate bars for their outrageous outfits). The theme was "prom." At least one girl came as Bella in a wedding dress, and another cross-dressed as Edward for the same occasion.

It was also covered in the local paper. Best quote:

"I like that it was written by a mom, not a writer," Maggie.., 18, said through fake fangs. "It's the perfect book. It's what everyone wants — a model boyfriend who glows. It's relatable."

2:15pm: Garden rambling

One thing that really cracks me up is how the former owner of our house advocated using Roundup to kill off these nasty thistle plants that pop up in the front garden and it obviously didn't work. I mean, the damn things kept coming back! Since I started digging them out at the beginning of the summer, they've dwindled down to four or five occurances of small, weak plants. Unfortunately, the neighbor's flowerbed that connects to mine is fairly neglected and the damn things are running rampant over there. I'll probably just have to keep digging them out when they spread over to my part of the bed.

Composting in Rubbermaid containers is going very well! I turned over the first one today and started a second. We got a metal trash can to keep in the kitchen for food scraps and have been dumping that in the bin about every 2-3 days. This is probably why I opened the bin and found what are probably black soldier fly larvae chewing away happily. They kind of freaked me out at first because they were so big compared to housefly larvae. But I'm glad to have them as they pretty much the best thing ever for cleaning out the bigger-than-is-probably-ideal kitchen scraps I dump in there. Yay nature!

One thing I noticed is that the bottom of the bin seemed drier than it should have been. Where I have the bins is right on the other side of the fence from my neighbor's a/c unit which puts out a lot of heat and I suspect that has something to do with it. I'll just have to keep an eye on things and water as neccesary, especially since we've had a drop in rainfall recently.

Squash plants continue to bloom like crazy. Two of them are having a weird problem near their roots where the plant seems to be spliting and I'm not sure if it's from damp or slugs. It could be both, so far as I know. The plants out front aren't having that problem and it's drier and less slug-filled there. Oh, and the first squash I've seen is growing on a plant out front. Should be edible in a couple of days. Woohoo! Should all of the blossoms the squash plants are putting out turn into squash, I ahve a feeling I'm going to be heartily sick of the stuff in a couple of weeks. Good thing I already have a coworker who's interested in buying my excess.

6:38pm: Scott Kurtz releases the hounds

This is something that has been building up for a while, but escalated today. I don't think it yet qualifies as full blown wank, but if I'm wrong, I'll gladly move it.

So several months back Scott Kurtz, webcomic artist of PvP, linked to a blog which was created to criticize PVP. PvP Makes Me Sad, authored by Fake Scott McCloud (FSM), was said to occasionally flail, but mostly be some good constructive criticism. Of course, this wasn't good enough for the PVP fen, who all inundated the blog with inane comments.

But, time moved on, and the blog turned into a nice community for people who wanted to discuss PvP further than "LOL! Great comic!" (The PvP forums are notorious for banning pretty much any criticism at all.) Some of the criticisms weren't completely warranted, and there was definitely some nit-picking, but FSM mostly stayed away from that. Some Kurtz apologists stuck around in the comments, and Kurtz himself showed up to flail at times. (There was one instance where Kurtz posted a very bitchy response to a criticism, which he then followed up by claiming wasn't him, and someone took his laptop.) Full disclosure: I did post in the comments of that post, though none in the wank I'm leading up to.

More recently, Kurtz has Twittered (Is that a verb now? I'm not sure.) that he's done with PVPMMS, and won't be reading it anymore. No one really cares and the community continues mostly in peace. Until yesterday.

After about two weeks of almost universally reviled strips, Kurtz finally comes back with a funny strip. Unfortunately, FSM fails to get the joke. Everyone immediately corrects him, and he posts a correction to the original post. This doesn't stop the PvP fen from coming out of the woodwork and telling him how stupid he is, and how he needs to shut down his blog.

FSM posts a slightly tl;dr response which admits that he was wrong, but gets way more defensive than necessary. Not completely clear of wank, but nothing worthy of much comment, unless you are one of Kurtz's posse. The following shows up on Kurtz's Twitter:

I'm told my most public critic is starting to flail and eat himself. Kris made me block his site in terminal with httpaccess. I can't see.

Then, a few hours later:

Free original PvP artwork to anyone who can bring me the true identity of the Fake Scott McCloud.

This set the fanboys off. They tracked his IP down to Brooklyn (which FSM denies) and keep sending him IP tracking images, plus requesting to reset his password. (As an aside, does anyone know how this would accomplish anything? You have to have access to his email to get the password reset.)

Kurtz claimed that he wasn't trying to set off this big a man hunt, but sounds like back pedaling to me.

1:13pm: I just moved my house. Now I have to move my store.

Spending the day and probably the beginning of next week packing up the store here. Lots and lots of books. Ugh. We'll see how this experiment goes. Instead of any content, I leave you with a picture of the first cucumber and tomato from the garden this year. I was completely surprised to find a cucumber that big because I thought that the plants had just gotten started fruiting. I went down to check them because a squirrel had decided to eat a half grown one and I wanted to see what all was started on the vine. This was a very, very tasty cucumber. I can't wait for more! The tomatoes are ripening very slowly and the squash is mostly just flowering like crazy. Can't tell if those are going to do anything before fall or not. There's a few small peppers started on the plants out front. Not a huge harvest, but not bad for not really getting anything going until late May.

First veggies

Any use of the word "sheeple" in a serious context automatically disqualifies you from ever being taken seriously again.
