I keep debating whether this is a good idea or not because I have a good idea of what sort of answers I will get - but as it's about acceptable behaviour online and I have a horrible history of running off at the mouth about it... I FIGURE WHY STOP NOW?!
Basically I wanted to ask about people's thoughts on when a bigger fandom descends upon a smaller one, FOR THE GREATER GOOD, except I totally know what the answer to that is. Ahahahaha.
STOP. DROP THE FANFIC. LEAVE THE FANART TOO. NOW FUCK OFF AND TAKE YOUR BATSHIT WITH YOU.
Is the time honoured traditional response. :D Which is uh, also kind of wanky, and I usually have issues with that too... But when people who are really obviously one fandom, start talking about how such behaviour in another is unacceptable and they could of never have done it in their own fandom...? Uh. Smaller fandoms are not helpless and they do not need your pity. Possibly your fanfic, but anything else is kind of really condescending.
I always feel really shitty when people start throwing the word BNF around - because the only way you can stop is to... Not participate.
And I like reading fandom participation. Even if it is negative. It makes life more fun.
Also? BNF is a word with a loaded history, the moment you start throwing it around is the moment you started to insult whoever you were talking to. It is disingenuous crap to imply otherwise, because at the moment, the only way to become familiar with the word is when there is an BNF issue.
But the thing that is bugging me... Is... SAVE US FROM THE FIREY IRE OF BNF, through the uh, firey ire of BNF....?
... Is it just me or is there a small problem there?
Like who's going to eat the cane toads once you get rid of the bugs.
Finally why the hell is a JFer acting as the fandom police? ... and being such a twat about it? Oh wait it's
herongale never mind then!
Screaming censorship of lurkers! While demanding that people flock down?
LAME.

Get a pidgeon to eat the toads, a snake to eat the pidgeons, and a gorilla to eat the snakes. Then come winter the gorilla simply freezes to death.
Or something like that.
Also if they did, they'd die off anyway.

Or tl;dr explanation?
A person on my flist rants about characterisation as does a friend of hers in d.greyman (anime fandom) on their personal journals. It is not always very nice. Most of the time it is fairly generic fanficrant type fodder on characterisation. Sometimes it is about a particular story - not exactly a spork, but they didn't like the take - the story isn't linked but if you were active you probably knew what it was most of the time.
Not very nice? But hardly the destruction of fandom either. It appears to work the same way it always does in most fandoms - people who don't like it and them, avoid their journals, and their own group of friends comment and agree.
A flock of Fullmetal alchemist fandom people, many of which self-proclaim themselves as BNF, then decide that it is their fandom duty since both of the people in question used to come from there, to teach these "BNF" a lesson.
And of course the dgreyman people are BNF! They couldn't possibly not know that their statements are causing "undue negativity upon the fandom, becoming a blight upon LJ" type thing.
Which sort of infuriates me, because ... of okay, I'm NOT active in d.greyman, but there were a couple of people who not involved in this directly, going "D.greyman has BNF? Wut?" The people using the word BNF are either the FMA people, or the people on Sutlers and asingular girls journal saying, well yes they are good writers!
Which is the same thing I tend to hear all the time, in smaller fandoms, whenever the stupid BNF stuff comes up, and it's almost always BS.
The result is sutlers and asingulargirl are now going to flock down - which is fair enough if you do want to keep the conversation private... Just I didn't think it should of been necessary, and I thought it was the FMA people that were making this very personal, and nasty.
Upon rereading, I think I was more annoyed with the experience I've had on this sort of thing previously, than the actual issue at hand, since herongale doesn't seem quite as twattish.
But I was irritated at her in particular for assuming part of the policing role, when I recall quite clearly her saying "I'm sorry their aren't any good writers in your fandom ):" on one of these posts in question, and her "Oh! You think of your journal as being personal! I always though people who said that were just doing it to feed their egos" as really kind of twitty for someone who's been on LJ as long as she had.
I also found it frustrating, because this isn't fandom_wank, keeping people down and forcing them to flock - it's the people on LJ themselves doing all that.
