MMOs

Fiesta, I'm sorry I doubted you as an free playing MMO. NEVER LEAVE ME.

I just started Planeshift ( http://www.planeshift.it/ ) because I really liked the artwork in some of the screenshots I saw, but it doesn't seem very newbie/non roleplayer friendly.

To the point where I freak out over my characters name.
1. Aww the rules say no Qem for me as it needs to be "medieval".
2. Aww I can't even do it with initials as it's firstname lastname only.
3. Kait is taken as a firstname.... and you can't share first names.
4. Is this obscure Arthurian legend name medieval enough? Celtic names count as medieval too right? Haha...
5. What? Why won't even the randomly generated name that the GAME ITSELF SUGGESTED WORK.
5. b. You can't share lastnames either? WHAT.
5. c. random generation number 7 please work.
6. *goes to cry in a corner*

- I did eventually get a name. But it's not even 24 hours, I haven't left the newbie area, and I think I have been banned. *facepalm*

Signs that FW influences my thinking

Took one look at this and my first thought was of sepiamagpie and sparkling pretty princess things.

My second thought is that my mother is extensively refurnishing her childhood dollhouse, hunting down specifically designed dolls for it, has recently bought a new digital camera, is addicted to an MMO and progressing to the internet in general, and loves doing various projects (especially art) to either entertain herself, or annoy a lot of other people.

My third thought is popcorn.

Heh. Same but different.

So I just got around to watching the Narnia movie (wardrobe) [the reasoning why I didn't see it until now is basically a long not bitter at all, type going wrong things]. I realise there are lots of issues, lack of poc, lack of female speaking roles, CS Lewis is a man of many issues and so is hollywood, and just all round BLAH.

But the issue that stood out the most for me personally is the same one that pissed me off as a child -despite enjoying most of Narnia- when the Fox spoke about getting into genetics... He looked like one of the enemy.

Just the concept that there are good beasts and bad and everything was broken up into races. It felt like it eliminated the element of choice, which really undermined Aslan's sacrifice - he chose to sacrifice himself in order to save Edmund. People chose to follow the Queen or Aslan - that's what makes the choice... have consequences and meaning. =/

It makes a more striking battle appearance, but it makes me feel sick at how shallow and superficial it is.

This is also possibly the point where I admit I felt slightly guilty about enjoying Narnia a small child because I caught the Christ metaphor, but didn't understand that it was um. Meant to be there? I thought it cheapened actual Christianity. ;>.> *makes the oogie boogie type motions*

My opinion these days is very different, though oddly enough for almost the exact same reasoning. I think fictional drama on real life issues can be a good thing as it makes things more identifiable and well. personal. You get a better idea for what that sacrifice meant exactly. Seeing Aslan's discomfort and thinking about how frightened he must of been but he knew what he needed to do - makes me thing about the situation it's reflecting. Thinking about why stuff was wrong or good and the issues behind things is really important as far as I'm concerned, instead of just ... If you don't think, where is the choice and where is the meaning behind your belief?

Though a lot of people are idiots, and I think sensitive issues should be treated sensitively...

The PoC issue bothers me a lot more than female roles. At least in the BBC miniseries there were black centaurs as well as white ones with the humanoid part (~.~; though they didn't get speaking roles IIRC and still no Hispanic/Middle Eastern/Asian/Other.), it would of been easy to have a bit of diversity amongst the humanoids.

It could of been worse* though.... which Narnia did actually >.<;... and not just with black dwarf Vs Red dwarf thing, like the human nations in "Horse and His Boy".... Calormen = so much face palm. (ack. Why did I have to like Shasta and Bree snarky friendship so much? Why did Aravis seem so kick ass? This was my favourite. D:) At least in the movie it's just animals - sentient though they may be - rather than dividing up people into that undercurrent of being born into roles where they are basically not good people.

*shrugs* The female characters that Narnia had always rocked my socks a lot so the unbalancing never really bothered me. Though I was always irritated about the santa line about women in battle being an ugly thing. Anyone in battle is an ugly thing.

(Also Jadis was totally hot when she had the two swords. Just sayin')

Heh. And I can see how much I changed and didn't change. I still enjoy some parts of Narnia, but looking at a lot of issues in the series still makes me feel slightly guilty about it. Just the reasoning for why is different. And the irritation has gone up.

I don't know if I'll be able to watch Caspian now though. And I'm not sure if Narnia is a book series I want to encourage my kids (if I ever have any) to read, even though before it was always on the list of things they must have a copy of. =/

*I would rather attribute stupidity than malice.
So thanks to the doll wank I finally got around to reading "looking for a group" which I'd been meaning to do for a while.

I knew Draffyn (my younger sibling) favourite character, was Richard. I knew that Richard was an evil monomaniacal type character who had something to do with singing.

So no surprises there.

It was surprising how slashy I found the relationship between Richard and Cale, though. I mean I don't ship it ... exactly ... I just find it impossible to believe that there isn't something on Richards end, in a warped and corrupting the innocent manner. O.o; like in the first chapter the thought he's trying to get into your pants and introduce you (Cale) to a life of debauchery cropped up, and... never went away.... at all while reading.

Draffyn says that I'm not in her good books anymore. How much do you know.
(a) Acutely aware of all of the juicy goss.
(b) Actually your kind of obtuse to this sort of thing.
*c) Yup, yup all seems pretty straightforward, best of luck to them and you don't really need to know much more than that.
(d) Just the right amount of knowledge - you know what your friends tell you, and don't need to know any more than that.
(e) Nobody tells you anything! If it wasn't for your quick reflexes you could of seriously screwed up.

halp halp. I think the sleep deprivation is catchign up. D:

Bazoyaka

I keep debating whether this is a good idea or not because I have a good idea of what sort of answers I will get - but as it's about acceptable behaviour online and I have a horrible history of running off at the mouth about it... I FIGURE WHY STOP NOW?!

Basically I wanted to ask about people's thoughts on when a bigger fandom descends upon a smaller one, FOR THE GREATER GOOD, except I totally know what the answer to that is. Ahahahaha.

STOP. DROP THE FANFIC. LEAVE THE FANART TOO. NOW FUCK OFF AND TAKE YOUR BATSHIT WITH YOU.

Is the time honoured traditional response. :D Which is uh, also kind of wanky, and I usually have issues with that too... But when people who are really obviously one fandom, start talking about how such behaviour in another is unacceptable and they could of never have done it in their own fandom...? Uh. Smaller fandoms are not helpless and they do not need your pity. Possibly your fanfic, but anything else is kind of really condescending.

I always feel really shitty when people start throwing the word BNF around - because the only way you can stop is to... Not participate.

And I like reading fandom participation. Even if it is negative. It makes life more fun.

Also? BNF is a word with a loaded history, the moment you start throwing it around is the moment you started to insult whoever you were talking to. It is disingenuous crap to imply otherwise, because at the moment, the only way to become familiar with the word is when there is an BNF issue.

But the thing that is bugging me... Is... SAVE US FROM THE FIREY IRE OF BNF, through the uh, firey ire of BNF....?

... Is it just me or is there a small problem there?

Like who's going to eat the cane toads once you get rid of the bugs.

Finally why the hell is a JFer acting as the fandom police? ... and being such a twat about it? Oh wait it's herongale never mind then!

Screaming censorship of lurkers!
What I have learned this weekend.

There is not nearly as much crossover with table top rp and anime as people would think and at the moment it's really irritating when people - even from within - keep grouping us together, because... we're not the same, we have different humour, different wants... Different outlooks.

And we were both pretty broad groups to begin with.

It's nice to have a little crossover but when it comes down to it, our own little corners are cosy enough, and we shouldn't try to be "adding on" others - it comes off as superficial in the end.

Also! It's fascinating the lack of women in the western media choices (read, rp people) and the abundance of women in the eastern media choices (read anime).

No seriously, I might of been watching for it, and I had say in what the anime choices where (not nearly as much as some people might think though), and very little in the Western, but what the hell.

Admittedly some (but only some!) of that abundance is fanservice, but if when it comes down to not existing or physic defying boobies, I'll pick the boobies. EVERY TIME.

Both are slightly more likely to know what your talking about with the other, but that doesn't mean that their all that interested.

So I was looking through the old wank - like two years ago, and thought I spotted someone I know in rl who only just turned 18 ( so certainly wouldn't of been then.)

Fortunately both variations of the username given aren't the same or how this person chooses to call themselves which is a variation on their username... though I'd certainly feel more comfortable if their journal didn't exist at the time - which is not the case sadly... D: So I don't need to bring in the internal/external debate of, well do we delete it now?

But I'm still left with vague feelings of unclean.

Mostly because it reminded me of why I used to like them and uh, I kind of find them v. annoying now.

... Peace, peace.

Racism wank is not funny.
Youtube wank is not funny.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eN9KP6lOZs

But eeeeeeeeeeeeeee, is that kid cute there and had me giggling and clapping my hands. <strike>Family in the background look so fake/stiff/postured though. D:</strike>

Bah.

Was reading over the Hair incident, and one thing that strikes me as being just plain odd with the conversations involved, is... His hair (the one everyone obsesses about!) doesn't strike me as the wash and wear kind.

I mean it's obviously a lot easier than straightening it... And is maximising his natural style.

But I don't get how people can say that it is messy... I just don't.

It's just to me it looks like it has been really obviously styled and although yes... it's called t.v - he strikes me as quite presentable.

I wouldn't find it unusual if a kid/teen/early twenties had hair like that on the streets and would take the assumption that they spend much more time on hair matters than me and are stylish sort of people. <strike>which is not hard, as the only hair matters I worry about are great big clumping knots, tying it back into a bun/ponytail, and cleanliness. D:</strike>

He looks just a bit too young for my tastes, but add on a few years and. HAWT.

Now if they were late twenties +, I would find it unusual, but that's because most people of that age that use gel on a regular basis go for a completely different sort of look. ;>.>

Which could be a tie in to the whole racism/professionalism that is ingrained... But it is also true that there are certain looks that are considered presentable in certain jobs - and the aim is to be a uniform as possible without actually wearing a uniform and yes it sucks that means however the dominant group is - who you aim to look like. D:

I could certainly understand if people were concerned if he (fab!hair!musical!boy) was working with food - but that can easily be contained in a hat or hair net and he can go back to that hair style when not working.

(My youngest sister Ren. Totally obsessed with her hair. Especially when stressed - she uses it to relax and may spend over an hour straightening, gelling, carefully arranging and all that shit.

It was really funny from my perspective when she was working with fast food and she'd have just finished her hair when she'd get a last min call to go in - and have to completely redo it it so it was tied up. XD

So I can totally understand why people may find it amusing to mock people's hair, but from what I gathered it wasn't just one joke and moving on it's an entire pattern... And just from the wank along it's clear that there is so much more to mock with a "so bad it's good" kind of show!)

ETA: One thing though. People who have long hair do get it stroked a lot, and yes as a fetish, it's very common.

But if you cut your hair, you usually don't need to worry about it. There are some issues, but if you have really long hair - but as long as it's out of the way, it's usually not an issue... Which is not the case for a few ethnic groups... And as this situation shows, even people who obviously take good care of their hair, get targeted as being messy. D:

I'll file this as one of those situations in which. People Are Weird.

Also *after clicking more links* douchebags.

But I'll save my thoughts on yaoi for another day. ;>.>

a vaguish prompt idea

Vaguish idea for a challenge prompt for myself, would be happy if it spread.

For me: Pick ten female characters I like and write drabbles on them by a deadline.

For you: Pick a character from the list, name your prompt, and I will write you a drabble. Can be pairing, colour, detailed whatever.

Biske-chan (hxh)
Renge (Ouran)
Momo (Oofuri)
Luna (hp)
Nase (hikago)*Manga only
Yuki (whistle!!)* (vol... 13 I think + random in store browsing of 15 I think?. All of anime.)
Kagura (IY)* /after ze chapter/
Mamori (es21)*current with manga, ep 40 with anime
Selphie (ffviii)
Cherie (KKM) *all of anime.

Vague public code for the next list
FTNL, EBC, YKK, QFF8, FHO, HGHP, Yffx, pffx2,

Don't need to know me to make a claim, I'll strike out once it's completed and bold when it's claimed.

Aim to finish...
My thoughts on the recent wankity-wank.

I find it somewhat ironic that everyone is going on about readability when.

Uh.

Fact:
Lowercase is easier to read than uppercase.

MY OPINION:
I'd personally rather people paragraph than use mixed case. There are people I seriously want to go and stabbity in there and the OP isn't one of them.

DISCLAIMER:
Mixed case is nice too, though.

Fact:
Ow. Ow. Ow. My eyes, my eyes.

Viva la boredom. o.o;

That being said, I agree that making an effort to make your posts readable goes a long way in keeping people amicable. + It is polite because it makes things a lot easier for people and more likely to pay attention to the meaning than focusing on the semantics.

+ What's so hard about adjusting your writing style for the group your writing to. It's not like that's completely different from what you do in meatspace anyway...

After reading that article Qem's thought process was something like:

First thought:
"so it's like kinky BSDM."
Second thought:
"Wait. What?"
Third thought:
"How does that even make sense?
Forth thought:
"... Why would you even?
Conspiracy and memage. COINCIDENCE? I think not.

Conspiracy theory 101
Ms Scribe was hired by 6 apart as part of a LOOK A DISTRACTION Campaign.

//end tired random thought.

THE RULES:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favorite lyric to your current favorite song. Or your favorite kind of sandwich. Or your favorite breed of tropical fish/kind of bug/breed of dog. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions

1) What toy did you most want as a child but never get?
Hmm, probably that mad scientist eat your own experiments candy toy maker thing. :)

Mmmm mad scientist candy.

But my mother objected to eating experiments / felt the toy encouraged unsafe practices.

I think that was the story at least.

2) What's your favorite song to sing?
Probably nursery rhymes since I tend to sing them randomly when tired.

SING A SONG OF SIXPENCE POCKET FULL OF RYE.

3) Coke or Pepsi? WHY?
Coke - it uh...? Tastes fizzier usually? And is more often on special at the supermarkets.

4) Where do you live (don't have to get too specific here, but tell me a little about your home)?
Fairly normal old falling apart house. Backyard with four garden sections, some <strike>dying</strike> fruit trees, a trampoline (bounce bounce!), broken slide and an old cubbyhouse bus at the back. :) My house is where I grew up and you can tell it's a place that's been well worn by kids. It's also a house that my families sort kindof outgrown a little.

I live in metropolitan Sydney - out in the suburbs. There is a <strike>giant open sewer</strike> <strike>water catchment</strike> lake that they've built as part of an attempt to prettify the area down the road. There are shopping centre/market things about. Where I live is a mix of old houses and newer ones, and brand new ones. Which describes my suburb, at least four others adjacent and another three further out....

It's more interesting to talk about the wildlife though than my house...

We get bats sometimes in the backyard, along with rosellas in summer. Never seen a possum around my house, but they have been seen in my suburb. It's kind of cool when I'm out in the evening on the trampoline to see a flying fox go past...

There are lots of other birds about, though I'm not sure about the names, their are sparrows and minor birds (the noisy natives and the indian pests), crested pigeons and little blue things as well as what I suspect is a butcher bird.

And willy wagtails. D: At least that's what I think they are. THEY NEVER EVER FRICKING SHUT UP.

Up the road we get magpie swarms sometimes, but the woman up the road is generally pretty good about making sure people don't feed them and that they'll actually disperse.

5) Do you have an internet crush? If so, on whom?
Mmm. Not really an internet crush, since I wouldn't describe my feelings as romantic... I did once when I was 16/17 though.

There are however a large number of people whom I admire for a multitude of reasons, be it strong forth right opinions and their ability to stand firmly behind them, an awesome sense of humour, and general personality traits.

You can usually find them on my friendslists. *g*

1. What's your version of the perfect day?
Wake up and feel awake. Meet up with friends, chat have fun, SUNSHINE, lots of SUNSHINE, general hang out / go out, lots of good food and snacks, come home, feeling tired but happy, go to sleep with ease - and never once think during the day what a good day this is and how it could be better.

2. What kind of music do you like? Favorite band? Song?

Um. In a word, weird stuff. I like listening to music that I wouldn't get a chance to listen to elsewhere and would find difficult to memorise only hearing it a couple of times mixed in with hundreds of other tunes.

I like poppy-rocky type things in a multitude of languages. Soothing peaceful things. Soft rock/pop. Alternative. Latin. Music that makes me laugh. Deep drawling voices (Rawr, sexy). Generally though I can't listen to albums because I get edgy before the album is through.. There are a couple of exceptions like Billy Idol cyberpunk, but even that - I'd listen to the album then switch to something COMPLETELY different.

D: This is possibly a phobia developed by younger siblings that put nickleback and good charlotte on repeat ALL DAY AND NIGHT and listen to things that sound just like that alongside. What? It was good the first... 10 times maybe? But your up to 150.

I like music but I don't like analysing it and I hate picking favourites.

At the moment, my favourite play list contains

Valentine kiss by Oshitari Yuushi - yes I know a prince of tennis song, Lullaby by the cure, Tokyo by dead frenchmen, Mystify - INXS, Fire by Paulina Rabio, Sirus Black by Tony Goldmark, Taiyou wa Yoru mo... hunter x hunter song, craft of the wise - inkubus, Jojo by patricia kaas, Qian Nian Zhi Lian by F.I.R, Lagoon by nightwish, Harujion = bump of chicken, quincey no hokori - Ishida character single, In love but not at peace - Dar Williams, Trance to homunculus which is an FMA song, Falco by hitomi, rainy days never stays the brilliant green, bonnie and clyde by Luna feat, werewolves of london by adam sandler and Rasputin by Boney M.

But things on there tend to ever stay for ages and ages or switch and switch. I need to figure out the "I like the way you move guy" is, since I like his voice but don't have any of his music. :)

I mostly go play all random though.

I adore the Billy idol cyberpunk album. I couldn't pick a favourite song from there if I tried. Treasure from youth.

yes. I know. I mock myself.

3. Do you believe in true love?
Do I believe that there is love strong enough to last through years, continents and death? Yes.
Do I believe that there is one person and only one person out there that is perfect for you? Sorta. I don't like the idea of one true love, but I do like the idea of true love... If that makes sense?

4. Spaghetti or lasagna?
Hmm. Difficult decision since I'm not much of a pasta person... Probably lasagna because it's easier to cut up. XD

I broke my left arm repetitively as a kid, so when eating it tends to hang uselessly by my side, I can use cutlery with both hands, but not easily/thoughtlessly, so I muchly prefer casual meals where I only need one item of cutlery or can use my hands.

5. What's your biggest pet peeve?
The sounds people make when eating with their mouth open.

D:

DRIVES ME OVER THE FRICKING WALL. D:

Fastest way to tell whether I like or love you. If I like you'll I'll flinch a lot, if I love you I'll bitch a lot. :)
-"any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"
-"If technology is distinguishable from magic, it is insufficiently advanced."
-"any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology."

This was my hobby at one point, like many other things I do, to annoy someone. Writing down as much as I can, while sleep deprived to redo this.

Er the overall point was that concepts are backuped by language, and just because the approach is different doesn't make the concept any less or more, only differently shaped. Or soemthing.

Basically pointing out similarities between fantasy and scifi.

Astronomy is from Astrology, Chemistry is from Alchemy, Science Fiction is from Fantasy and ultimately the difference lies in motivation/explanation.

In other words Qem likes reading trashy novels.

Magic = deus ex machina = MacGuffin
Golems = Robots
elves = vulcans
Telepathy=mind reader
Telekinetic = I CAN MOVE THIS SHIT WITH MY MIND.
Artificial intelligence = Magical Creations
timetravel
flying ship = spaceship
portal=wormhole
dimensions
pseudo humans
races=aliens
Language chip=babblefish
misplaced worship
Chimeras (gene splicing Vs Magically merging)
MAD SCIENTIST=MAD WIZARD
half-breeds=Hybrids.
fortune telling = precognition
light saber = sword of light
force field
misplaced worship
Virtual reality = dreamworld
Drugs/herbs/hallucinogens
Kzinti = CAT BOYS ... and so I may have found the basis of what is a deeply rooted kink within myself.

Er this list was probably largely influenced by or influenced the SpaceFaring Unicorns that were highly placed in an organisation that effectively created an intergalactic economic and technological stranglehold.

At this point I'm not sure which came first - the unicorns had spaceships about a decade before the list, but the unicorns were considerably refined after the list. But both the list and the unicorns can be summed by... "I fail to see a difference." and "Whee this is cool!"

This is what happens when you read your fathers books before your tall enough to get them of the shelf without a chair.

Note to self, find this Cacofonix / Fulliautomatix

What is this

So. There's this book sitting on the dining table, which in my house means "HEY OPEN GROUNDS FOR READING", so I picked it up.

This is incidentally the same sort of policies that lead to my mother and myself reading Harry Potter, as well I got started on the Bartimeous trilogy, etc.

It's labelled survivors and has a dark city, mushroom cloud and moon... So I'm thinking "post-apoplectic sci-fi" and I flip it over to read the blurb.

"Darkest days blah" skip, read small text which oddly enough leaps out at me, more than the blurb does which I'll get back to in a min.

This book, is not part of the "left behind" series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.

So it's what, fanfiction?

It is however, an attempt to address certain issues which we feel were left out, contradicted, or mis-interpreted in that series.

Anti-fanfiction?

We have used a few similarities between some of the main characters in that book and some of the main characters in our own, in order to give the public a feel for how events might have unfolded if the Left Behind series had been true to events predicted in Bible prophecy, and if the characters purporting to be Christians had behaved in a more Christian manner.

YOU DON'T KNOW THESE CHARACTERS LIKE I DO!

Please read this book prayerfully and seriously, as it concerns important fundamentals in Christian belief and important principles in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

*jaw drops*

Fiction? Not really.
$11.99? No way!

Please tell me no one paid that much for this shit. Please tell me that this was just 50 cent bargain bin, only looked at the cover....

The actual blurb is all "DARKEST DAYS" and "DECADENCE AND DISASTERS THREATEN TO DESTROY THE WORLD", handful of believers, revolution of faith, love that shocks the world, based on bible prophecies...

.... And I'm thinking isn't that blasphemous?

The inside looks exactly like some of those "end of the world is near" Christian pampletes, complete to the cheap thin paper and formatting.

D:

I am very disturbed that someone in my family declared this open reading.

As much as I like InsaneJournal (but hey I like JF and LJ too), I can't help but think that the wank report reads partially like an advertisement for the place. =/

Fan comes from fanatic which is a step away from insane. Right?

Just checking that everything keeps on adding up. ^.~

But why won't someone think of the children?

I wish I could think of a witty way to write this up to fandom_lounge, or for a report.

Bah.

http://jojo-kun.deviantart.com/journal/13877238/

Basically a bunch of DA trolls have been going around specifically reporting fan art, which while the art in particular is mostly platonic stuff ... one of the characters is underage.

So a user wrote to deviant art about it...

I think my favourite part is as a response from the administrator:

I would suggest that the artists who feel a driving need to select child characters from popular television shows and draw them in a highly sexualized manner simply find a more acceptable subject matter if they choose to continue submitting here; the entire "thing" about "aging up" is little more than an attempt to find a loophole in our policies against showing children in a sexualized manner and I think just about everyone is aware of that.
