It's Not About Friendship, It's About Mutual Interests I'm hoping sticking this here will mean I'll need to repeat it less in my LJ. I don't have a "friends" list. I have a reading list. It's unfortunate that the LJ PTB chose such emotionally-laden terms as "friend" and "friend of," but I'm not going to let their phrasing dictate my usage. Some of the people on my reading list are my friends. Some are not. Some of my friends are on my reading list. Some are not. I never look at my "friend of" list, so I have no idea what criteria people are using to include me on their reading lists. Whatever it is, I don't care, so long as it works for them. Due to health issues, I have an upper limit on my reading list. For every new journal I add, I have to drop an old one, to maintain that limit. This means I rarely add new journals, unless I'm going through a period where I'm drifting out of an old fandom and into a new one. I will often add new fandoms without dropping old ones, which makes the whole maintenance issue even trickier. In any case, don't ask me what criteria you would have to meet to be added to my reading list, because one of the big ones is mutual interests, and interests change. And honestly, if you're willing to change the content of your LJ just so someone else will "friend" you, that's already a sign to me that your LJ is not going to be something I'll be interested in. Write what interests you, what gets you excited, and you'll find your readers. My LJ is currently flocked. If you're really keen on reading my ramblings, you can email me and I will add you, but most likely filter you out of my reading list view. My fic-only LJ is defunct, because I am terrible at keeping it updated, so if you're just looking for fic, I recommend checking my website, which I update every few months. I also try to keep my memories updated, when I remember. My reading list is not about friendship. It's about the confluence of mutual interests, mutual fandoms, tastes in writing styles, approach to meta, and a few other things which are more to do with how we each present ourselves in writing than anything else. So don't take it personally if you're not on my reading list. Or take it personally, but realize that won't change the way I do things. Your choice.
