Monsters Vs. Aliens!
Go see it!

It's very funny and cute, and though it's not a laugh-a-minute, nor has a very interesting plot, it's fast, has good characters, and... has a totally awesome main character who is female!

Susan = ♥. I also really liked Missing Link and Insectosaurus' friendship, but the point about Susan's relationship with the other characters, was that they all respected and liked her (okay, there was one 'lol, Missing Link, you got shown up by a girl' but I'm ignoring that), and it wasn't like, "Oh, Susan, you weakling" or "Oh, Susan, you're just overreacting about Derek," and when Derek broke up with Susan, the movie's writers weren't like, "Okay, we have no romantic interest for our female character now! Pair her off with SOMEBODY!"

And Susan saved her friends, they saved her, she saved them, so they had a nice pattern going, and the female character wasn't the constant DID! Because, you know, lots of times movies will put in a 'badass' female character, and yet said badass gets her ass saved by the guys all the time. And she was the main character, let me repeat. She had the most background, and the most screen time, and she beat the villain pretty much by herself. YES!

And her character, in general, was an average woman, but she really was a strong female character, plot-wise, and her personality itself. But she was still average. And I think that's important, because once she realizes she can do something, she does it, like in fighting the robot. And even though she ran away first (and the others were totally understanding about, and not all 'ha ha, silly terrified woman!'), she immediately was like, "I have to save these people!" on the bridge. BORN HERO, I'm saying here! And the idea that an average chick (personality-wise, I should point out) can still be a Strong Female Character, without having her be a Mary Sue (IF ANYONE CALLS SUSAN A SUE I WILL END THEM) or something like Frank Miller's version of Wonder Woman, is something really important and nice to see. Susan was realistic, the other two not so much.

Also, there was a cute minor moment when the robot first lands and a girl (Kelly? I'm not sure) tries to score with her reluctant bf and then carries him up the hill to see whatever crashed. So that's -

1. Women can like sex.
2. Women can be adventurous.
3. Women can be strong enough to carry their bf up a hill.

ALL IN A KIDS' MOVIE :D :D :D :D

And the reason that she was carrying him up the hill is because he fell and twisted his ankle, the classic fumble a girl makes in a movie while running from a monster!

So, while not a perfect movie, this was an unexpected gem. And for a kids' movie, when I've been raised on the Disney 'true love or die' princess movies, or the Pixar 'where are all the female leads?' movies, it was so heart-warming to see.

GO SEE IT. It's also very, very funny at parts, and had enough action that I wasn't bored. My favorite joke was Missing Link's one about Al Gore, or Bob's thing with Derek, which I won't explain because YOU MUST SEE IT FOR YOURSELF.

GO!!!

OMG I went to see it thanks to your rec, and it was so good! I really enjoyed it. :D Okay, so there were a few things that bugged me (like the 'har har chick keeps screaming at the sight of monsters' moment), but overall it was very funny and cute.

My favorite joke was Missing Link's one about Al Gore
Seconded!

I saw it! And I enjoyed it! It was silly and funny (though I thought some of the jokes aimed at the adults felt a bit out of place,....) but it was really good.
