Every time I see a mention of McKay's allergy being Very Deadly Serious in fandom I just laugh. I don't watch the show, but I bet it was played for laughs. In fandom, though, it's serious fucking business and not be made light of!

I've always gotten the impression that it was probably some one-off joke on the show, which they maybe brought up again once or twice in later seasons when they thought it would be funny, and that was that. BtVS probably got more angst out of Anya's fear of bunnies than Stargate got out of McKay's citrus allergy.
