MOD POST: Rules Clarification [06 Sep 2008|03:00pm]

unfunnybusiness

[melannen]
[ mood | Focused ]

This community's grown a lot since we first set it up, and we, your friendly mods, think it is past time to clarify the rules. This is just an expansion of what has been in the userinfo, and it will be going into the userinfo shortly: no major changes, but please read them over again, and we will be able to keep the community running smoothly.

1. Follow JF's ToS. You can get banned from JF for breaking the no-posting flocked material rule (stuff that was always under flock from the start). So, just don't do it.

2. Try to keep arguments and debates from turning into bloodbaths. Heated exchanges are one thing; "It's a good thing I don't know where you live, because I'd come and cut you, you stupid cunt" is another. Offenders can be banned temporarily at the moderator's discretion, for any reason. Repeat offenders may be banned permanently. Temporary bans will last a week. Notification of a ban is a courtesy extended to community members.

3. If you're posting the equivalent of 92 theses nailed to a church door, LJ-cut is your friend.

4. This community is not officially associated with any other wank communities. Their guidelines do not automatically apply here (but use common sense). We take no responsibility for what happens to you if you post unfunny things in those communities.

5. There are very few limits on what topics may be posted here. Some examples: There doesn't have to be any actual wank before a link is posted here. [info]unfunnybusiness posts do not have to be fandom related, but fandom and internet issues can be here too. Tl;dr and thoughts on yaoi are welcome, no really, and we mean it when we say "unfunny". Having an opinion on serious issues is encouraged (yes, even if you're the OP). And anything is serious business enough to post here, as long as there are people who want to discuss the unfunny aspects. Yes, even if there's already a post somewhere else that's mocking the same topic.

6. Real names or initials, and links containing the same, are not allowed on the comm unless the name is mentioned on a news story, part of their internet handle or publicly used on that person's personal site or blog. The blogosphere doesn't count as a news site.

7. If you're not certain if a link or other content is appropriate for the community, ask a mod: melannen (melannen at yahoo) or pyratejenni (pyratejenni at gmail). If you can't be bothered to ask, you don't need to post either. Questions about the moderation of the community should be e-mailed to both of the mods.

So, there's a possible hurricane headed my way (Hanna) and I have been trying to come up with the world's most perfect weather-related mixed CD, but I am stumped on awesome songs about or including weather and so I turn to you, because despite what my mother says, you are attractive, intelligent, and will absolutely not knock me up, steal my truck, and run off to Mexico with a hairdresser named Candi.

So, can you recommend any songs about or including weather, especially but not necessarily about inclement weather? Below is the list I have managed to come up with, but honestly I would rather walk out into the storm rather then listen to some of them.

It's raining, it's pouring, working full time is boring )

'Twilight' question [05 Sep 2008|09:17am]

fandom_lounge

[tree]
I keep starting and dropping the books in a struggle between my curiosity boosted by all the posts in f_w and (lack of) tolerance for books focusing on high school romance, and a description of vampires I came across a few times sounds like a strange joke, so I thought I'd check its veracity here.

The vampires' eyes are a deep crimson when they feed on humans, but golden if their diet is animal-based. Now, maybe cannibalism of sorts does make differently sourced blood do different things, but I keep having visits from Logic with the following riddle:

red eyes : consumed blood = golden eyes : ???

D:

Please, writers, think things through!

Hello, wankahs! It is the most holy of days, my birthday.

There were a lot of ideas about how to celebrate it. The most prominent and the only one I can currently remember was to let Snacky out on all of you because she is full of a deep, dark anger welling up from pools within that I cannot even begin to comprehend. Well, mostly she was pissed off at all the genital-based insults being lobbed at someone for being a bad writer. But about other stuff, too!

Then I realized that would just end in tears. Except for Snacky, who would probably be on top of her mountain cackling while lightning struck in the background.

Being a peaceful toy dork, I decided on something that will make me happy. And hopefully The World, too!

No banning, no pranks, nothing elaborate.

I wants picspam.

Kittens, hot people ([info]hot_daily has put the madness in me. Also, go there. It's quality), puppies (unless you're puppyfree), and actually, mostly cute animals.

NYU JournalFen Meetup [04 Sep 2008|02:01pm]

fandom_lounge

[scifantasy]
During the discussion of the New York Twilight reading and Twilight Drunken Shenanigans, a lot of NYU pride started flying around.

So how about a meetup?

Based on location and time, I suggest this: a showing of an anime movie called The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, next Saturday and Sunday at the IFC Center Theater (6th Ave/3rd Street, a few blocks from Washington Square Park).

I've had at least one nibble of interest, but I wanted to throw the doors wide: are NYU-area JFers (or those from areas nearby) interested? If so, which works better, Saturday or Sunday? Anybody completely opposed to an anime showing? &c.

Sound off!

[info]nemesishamartia posts yet another rant about gay guys who act like stereotypical women in slashfic. "Words" are given, offense is taken, snark is had. But alas, in the end the commenters were merely guinea pigs in [info]nemesishamartia's social experiment:

"ETA2: Thank you all for participating in my women's studies experiment. A male classmate didn't quite grasp that the comments he made during class were insulting.

Your help was most appreciated. -- ;D Nems."

More on the McCain/Palin Circus [03 Sep 2008|11:49pm]

political_wank

[aeka]
For those of you who have been keeping up with McCain/Palin campaign, not only are their attacks on Obama becoming more laughable by the day, but their fellow republican supporters and former governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee (the former rival for McCain and could have even been Palin's soulmate) are also getting a piece of the same cake.

During her speech, Palin praises McCain for his "determination, resolve and sheer guts", a thought that is much shared by her soulmate Mike Huckabee, who states that McCain is "a man with the character and stubborn kind of integrity that we need in a president". (The same traits much possessed by current US President Bush no less)

She even goes as far as to say that "In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

She then criticised Barack Obama's change agenda by suggesting that he was "more interested in idealism" and "high-flown speech-making" than acting for "real Americans". (Whatever that means, though it can be interpreted only by the point of view of the reader).

Throw in former governors Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee into the equation and we get more clowns to amuse all in the McBush/Palin circus:

Mitt Romney's solution for change in America?

"We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington - throw out the big government liberals and elect John McCain"

Mike Huckabee's own two cents on Palin's experience as an American politician?

"I am so tired of hearing about her lack of experience. She got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

Yet, Palin herself admitted to being "a small town "average hockey mom" and stressed the fact that she is not part of the "Washington elite", thus adding much to Huckabee's credibility. There's also the issue of Palin's daughter Bristol's pregnancy being the subject of much media coverage.

The question is now, how do American citizens feel about McCain's choice for a VP given the circumstances? Their stance on things are just as polarised as the candidates themselves as expected.

From the Left:

"Picking Mrs Palin is just a ploy to get women to vote for the Republican ticket.

As for her daughter’s pregnancy, that just shows she's normal. It's not going to sway my vote either way, though. I'm voting for Barack Obama."

"I can't believe that McCain thinks women - and Hillary [Clinton] voters - will now support him just because Sarah Palin is a woman. Does he really think we're that shallow?

It's kind of ironic that someone with Sarah Palin's views has a daughter in that situation - I feel sorry for the young lady."

"Palin is an interesting choice. I was excited first, but then I read more about her positions and realised that I didn't agree with a lot of what she had to say.

And I feel a bit used by the McCain campaign, if they thought that just putting a woman on the ticket will make women vote for him."

"I'm unimpressed by Sarah Palin. I think the pick is aimed at the 13% of undecided voters in this country. I know I'm voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

And the pregnancy issue doesn't affect my opinion in any way."

"I'm still getting over my surprise at the Palin pick! As for her daughter's pregnancy - big deal! It means nothing."

From the Right:

"Sarah Palin is a great choice - John McCain has consistently been a maverick, and this pick just confirms it."

"We're very excited about Sarah Palin - she's a reformer.

Her daughter's pregnancy is a private matter for her family - this kind of thing happens all the time. It certainly won't sway our vote."

"I was undecided between Obama and McCain, but Palin has helped me decide. It made me think of my two daughters, so I'm going with McCain now.

The pregnancy? Doesn't matter."

"I've been telling people for a long time that Sarah Palin would be my ideal running mate for McCain.

As for her daughter's pregnancy, I'm indifferent."

The Bonus Ron Paul Supporters:

"Picking Sarah Palin will have no effect on our vote – we're big Ron Paul supporters, so we're not going to back McCain or Obama.

And the pregnancy thing is her business - we all have friends who've gone through something like that."

This will be a more exciting year than the 2004 Joke election year.

Have any of you 'The office' fans seen any discussion of this teapot in the fansites? Know where he can get one? Ebay has been fruitless apparently.

So, due to a conversation in fanficrants about the unnecessary woobification of psychotic pretty boys the idea for sickficfest was born. The idea being to write bad people doing very bad things.

So I come to you gentle readers for advice on promoting pan-fandom fic communities. Does anyone know of advertising communities, or general interest communities (besides this one) where a person could go to pimp their community?

Anonymous Will Protest at Katie Holmes' Broadway Debut

While I do feel bad that the other cast members of All My Sons will have to deal with this, I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out. (I'm also curious if they'll also protest A Tale of Two Cities, which stars James Barbour, who is supposedly also a Scientologist.)

ETA for kicks: This person apparently stands outside the TKTS (discount tickets) booth in Times Square fairly regularly. A+ message.

I just found out that one of the male Troll flirts in World of Warcraft is "Want some of my jungle love?". This skeeves me totally, because I've already had issues with the racial stereotypes in WoW. Most of the less human-looking races are clearly based off of some "primitive" civilization (Orcs are Africans and Tauren are Native Americans.) Those two are almost okay, they get Noble Savaged like woah, but at least they're not as bad as the Trolls. Trolls talk like Jamaicans, obsess about "da voodoo" (which turns people into frogs and zombies, naturally) and are cannibals. They live in jungles in the decayed ruins of their once-great civilization. They're like the natives in a Tarzan movie (or an Indian Jones flick, if you take the Zul'Aman instance into account -- I can't listen to the boss emotes there without cringing.) So I've already been plenty skeeved. The "jungle love" emote just raises my squick to whole new levels.

Of course, none of my guild-mates see that. I'm apparently overreacting, since there's no way that could have racist connotations at all. (As to how this came up, one of the characters in the guild was named "Jungleluv" and was made to rename his character because the name was inappropriate. Oh Blizz, you fail so hard.)

ETA: This forum thread details a lot of my problems with WoW's races, beginning at post 86. Disclaimer -- I'm Afagddu and Rebecka is my SO.

Babygate [01 Sep 2008|04:21pm]

[chaimonkey]
[ mood | Dramatic ]

Anyone else been watching the Sarah Palin Babygate on [info]ontd_political like I have?

Apparently, rumors in Anchorage became rumors on the Internets that Sarah Palin's latest, Trig, wasn't actually hers but her 16-year-old daughter Bristol's. Main reasoning for this was Palin not looking all that pregnant, Bristol being out of school with "mono" for 5-8 months, and some sketchy time-lines. This is a noteworthy rumor because Palin is vehemently pro-life, even to the point of "choosing life" in the hypothetical case of her own daughter (14 at the time).

An anonymous McCain aide tries to tie the Obama campaign to the rumors. Obama steps in to say STFU, this is embarrassing and you're all fired.

Then lo, a photo appears! Palin was indeed preggers. But why then is Bristol constantly carrying Trig with a ring on her finger?

Because - here's the kicker - she is in fact pregnant. Five months pregnant and going to marry the father, all at the tender age of 17. The conservatives think this is awesome.

You go, Momma Palin!

ETA: I ♥ the Internet. The MySpace page of the sister of Bristol's baby-daddy. (ETA2: BAHLEETED!)

shipping in j-pop fandom [01 Sep 2008|09:51am]

fandom_lounge

[brick_me]
I've never been in an Asian real people fandom, and I'm curious how it deals with real-people shipping. I know of k-pop slash, but that was at least five years ago, and in all the SuJu wank I've read, shipping never seemed to get mentioned. I also know people ship j-rock stars, but is it different with things like Arashi and Kat-tun (or whatever they're called)? Does it happen, just only in locked communities and flocked posts? If I squee over j-pop stars touching in general fan communities, would I seem like a n00b who can't follow the unwritten rules?

I'm particularly interested in j-pop fandom's attitude towards femslash shipping, which I've never heard of happening anywhere. Because I think I've fallen in love with Perfume (warning: this song will play in your head for the rest of the day).

The return of Chancery Stone [31 Aug 2008|01:08pm]

fandom_wank

[sleepyjean]
While visiting Amazon today I noticed a link in their romance forum for a romance between brothers. Because I always have to crane my neck to stare at a trainwreck, I clicked on the link.

And found Chancery Stone!

...who recs DANNY without disclosing that she's the author and then gets into arguments with posters who don't consider incest overly romantic. Just like always, Stone can't stop posting.

And don't miss the name of her new site--www.danny-is-god.com.

Mild wank, but it's nice to get a blast from the past.

ETA:

Original wank

Well-earned parody of wank

Flouncety flounce flounce

Further ETA: Amazon has deleted many of her more fervent posts.

Son of wank, featuring commentary by the awesome Nora Roberts, who smacks Stone down as wonderfully as you'd imagine--especially when Stone posts a link to her blog and tells them they're getting their 15 minutes of fame.

ETA the third: All Chancery Stone threads have been deleted by Amazon, and she's been banned from posting on its forums.
