5:31 pm - Just... nothing, I guess. Ranting about KH2 things. Nothing concrete.
|
This'll probably get updated either later today, or tomorrow with brainstorming ideas as they come. I have this horrible feeling that even mentioning a new "project" will jinx it right off the bat, but here's hopeing it won't.
In anycase, I was replaying KH, the nice little beginning part [but I have to go back and start over since I missed the first Axel&Roxas scene, and I need to check it out for contingency purposes], and there's the part where DiZ is all "Say no more, Namine!", and Namine's going "You may not know it's me, and I may not know it's you" blah blah.. switch back to a upper body shot of Roxas and there's this HUGE drawing of Kairi with a Paopu fruit RIGHT beside Roxas's head. SRSLY. I wonder if they planted that there intentionally.. which is kind of funny, since I never really noticed it before.
Yeah, that's it. Oh. Wait.. no. A theory, which goes hand-in-hand with the brainstorming I had.. but I think the first Axel&Roxas scene will disprove it. No, no, wait. If Namine was there before shouting down to him to use the Keyblade at the end of the Struggle match then it -may- have been intentional. Okay. More on that later.

This was more of a visual idea than anything written, but.. for the sake of logging it down, I'm gonna try.
( City for one. )
Edit: Unless! The goal of the character is to escape the city.. and they either A) get a train, or B) run down the tracks desperately to escape.. but when they've gone through all their psychological bullshit and mind-warping, and think they've reached the end... they find themselves "waking up" back in the middle of the station.

I was wondering about mediums.. and I guess translation from medium to medium.
By medium I mean written, comics, single image artwork, animations.
I was most specifically thinking about comics and how I have an under appreciation for them. Granted, I haven't read a comic in a while over an extended period of time, but even still.
I find with comics, whether doujinshi, manga, or something more american based, that I either do one of the following:
-read the text and skim the imagery accompanying it -skim the text and look mostly at the pictures connecting panel to panel.
I was thinking about this, how I find one seems to detract from the other. An image is a frozen moment in time, where as text, when read, transcends that moment and gives a beat or pace to the image along side it. They seem almost conflicting to me.
But perhaps this is more personal opinion, since I'm usually not one to ogle at an image for an extended period of time, nor have I ever really believed in purchasing prints off of people for purely the aesthetic appeal of the image (there may be other reasons, though, like simply liking and wanting to support that artist, or I have a weak moment and succumb to purchasing something based on fandom or something of the like..).
See, this sort of caught my attention when I was thinking about doujinshi, and translating a piece of fanfiction into doujinshi. But I realised that I honestly preferred the original fanfiction to anything I might be able to come up with in sequential panels. I think it's that I find the imagination is more.. creative when reading a good piece of fiction, and attempting to surpass that (with my skill level) in a single frozen-in-time image seemed... stupid, actually. It seemed practically insulting to the piece of fiction in question (this doesn't mean I don't still want to do it.. but that's another thing I guess..).
I'm wondering if that's more of an individual preference thing though. I mean.. Comics are nice, but I find a really good book will occupy my time for longer and bring me out to be more satisifed in the end. But might that be because I place a heavier portion on my imagination as opposed to having everything drawn out for me? If I had less of an imagination, would I prefer comics more? That's not to say those who like comics aren't any less imaginative.
But... it just feels like comics are.. the odd one out.
Written stories exist through their words over an amount of time that you decide on dependent on the time taken to read it, and the time implied within the story (usually more written = longer passage of time?).
Animations are purely time related. Action over a set amount of time. The progression of a story over a 24 miunte time slot on a television network. 2 hours worth of moving imagery, with a set pace of 24 frames per second.
Comics.. however... put a frozen moment without time.. with text that implies time. For some reason, the logic in my brain is telling me this doesn't work as well as it could. With the comics that I read.. find that the minor details, or small little jokes in the corner of the panel are what intrigue me the most alongside the progression of the main story. I guess it's something extra, usually visually, that you can choose to view or not view (at your own discretion) without drastically affecting the flow of the story.
Because there isn't exactly a continual sense of time flow in a comic (in my opinion), you can take advantage of that and pull your readers attention this way and that before they choose to move on to the next panel. If you were to do that in a purely text based format, the time taken to read the original story passage, and then the additional "joke" passage, then all that time would add up in my mind, and I'd find it'd make the story longer, and detract from it's flow.
I guess I'm just trying to figure out the best way to utilise and take advantage of the comic book format, under my current perception of what they are, without having any of the mediums contained in it from detracting from... well, itself.

Is it just me, or has there been an influx of stories and movies that don't have a predominante "villain" or opposing force in them? I don't actually have anything to base this off of, but it just sort of feels like we aren't putting a face to the villain anymore, or maybe we're moving away from that type of story, making a larger force the villain instead. Or in some cases, there isn't a villain at all, but rather the main character is struggling with something inside of themselves.
Or that the ultimate goal isn't to defeat that Super Evil Villain, but rather that the villain is simply one obstacle to achieveing what might be considered a less climatic goal?
I think I need to put some more thought into this.

10:06 pm - Aliens + Anime.
|
Seriously. Think about it. How many animes do you know of that actually combine aliens in a "monster" like sense with anime? There's aren't that many.
Excluding those that are similar to power rangers, or guyver (there's a word for those types of shows, I just.. don't know it.), and those that use what could be called an alien as a partner (digimon, pokemon, legendz, Kiba's a newer example this season) there's only 3 that honestly come to mind that treat aliens like an actual "probable" other race that might exist in the universe:
FLCL Alien 9 Gunbuster 2
FLCL had more humans I guess, but the big ass bird was pretty cool, not to mention the fucked-up-ness of it just kind of.. made it all worth it. But I guess this is the weakest example for this.
Alien 9 I loved. It didn't get very far, if I remember correctly. It only had 3 or 4 episodes to it, but the Borg were awesome. They were something new(ish) and interesting. It wasn't an alien that looked like a human (note: NieA under 7, Urusei Yatsura), it was an actual "alien".
Gunbuster 2 (having not seen the original) had various alien life forms that weren't human or of a similar calibre.
In after thought, Uchu no Stellvia could -possibly- fall under that, I guess.. but the aliens there weren't really a leading force to the entirety of the show, and you never really saw any more than their ships, so placing a physical body (like I'd want to) to them isn't really possible.
So this makes me ask "why". Why does every season have school girls in short-skirt uniforms. Why does every season seem to have one or more shounen-ai or shoujo-ai related series (Princess princess and strawberry panic to be specific to the season). The quality of series' coming out is, in my opinion, dropping. It feels like.. everyone's just following the same pattern.. the same "okay, we need to fill this time slot. Quick, pull a type of show out of the hat". Yeah, it might be easier to do that. But gawd, why can't I see more original and inspiring worlds, characters, interactions and stories?? Or they're even going "Okay, which pervious series that did well, should we continue?" Eg. Hack.//Roots
It's depressing in a way, but also.... very inspiring. I think that.. there's a huge possibility for other people, original people, to take their stories and push it to something marketable. I know there's thousands of amazing writers, and artists out there with amazing original stories, But asking them to give that idea to someone else.. I can see that as being a horrible deterent.
But.. If you could push your story. If you could make yourself buckle down and work on it, lay it all out (eg. manga to anime series'). Then people would be less likely to fuck with it. And the better the story is, the more it will stay together.
::sighs::
With that said, though.. I haven't developed any of my ideas to such a point. But I WANT to. And I'd like to think that, at LEAST writing them down here.. slowly developing them.. is helping me achieve that in some small way. This is also my GOAL. I entered Sheridan and the field of Animation to see my creations come to life. This isn't something I'll just give up on. This is my life.
I know me nagging other people to develop their ideas is kind of hypocritical when I'm not overly productive right now myself.. but if I just gave up on other people, that would be even worse.
I don't want to see "Anime" fall into the same trap that the North American animation has fallen into. Cheap, rushed animation, with non-solid stories, little appeal... and no diversity from everything else (CARS, FTW.).
If you have a story that you love, please... for the sake of seeing your creations come to life, work on it.

11:45 pm - kono nomo mono kono.
|
I found myself writing after that last little piece of dialog.
Series: Original Words: 2,190 Comments: Writing it down 'cus I just was. And for some reason I didn't want to stop. And so I don't forget. Notes: "----" = a new "scene". I think it's pretty much 2 or 3 random chunks that filed into my head that I just wanted to get the info for it down. POVs can, and DO change (literally) every other sentence. This is not real writing by any standard. There's 4 characters mentioned here. The main character (the boy, who I've called Kale for some reason), his Konomo (random word that looks liek Komono =D! Komono Dragons?) which is a beast like thing or "partner" as mentioned in previous post, the random girl in the beginning, and the Konomo that gets killed.
Uhmm.. the Boy refers to the Beast Konomo as an "it", and the Beast refers to the boy as an "it". Both refer to themselves as "he" (for the most part.. I'm not actually consistent in writing.. nor drawing for that matter), although I think the Konomo can sometimes been seen as more sex-less entity if it wants to. At the same time, it can also choose to represent a sex (otherwise the thing with the mom wouldn't have happened. Oh yeah. And I say the Konomo has eyes at one point, but really.. I don't think they do. I imagine some sort... Those white "evas" from the Evangelion movie type of things. With those huge mouths. Although I think he'd be more of a deep blue colour. And no lipstick. Disclaimer: This.. probably won't make sense just like the rest of the stuff here. I just want to get it down. Most of the imagery of where they are, like back alleys, or open aired arenas or what not are all pretty much in my head.. so the odds that there's anything descriptive in that to explain where they are... uhmm.. well, it doesn't exist.
( For some reason I save the .txt file as WalledWWater o_O; )

My Mp3 CD player thing managed to make it past the 65th song, as such I got to hear a chain of songs that, a long time ago, triggered a story pretaining to an anthropomorphic character of mine. But the infuriating part.. was that during part of the song I -knew- there was a portion of the story to that part, but I couldn't remember it for the life of me.
Series: Original [Fray] Comments: Writing it down so I don't forget again. Disclaimer: Uhmm.. it's based around Furries. And includes crazy enhanced dogs. ( Ramblings )
This is what I get for not writing things down =/.
With that said, I found an old sketch book that had the original ideas for my summoner story thing, and the one with dragons. I find it weird how when I have a story in the back of my head, I usually only see it in one medium. Comics for Fray, RPG for Summoner, Movie/Series for the Dragons.
Mmm-- And gorgeous work by Jennadelle in this post. I hope I'll be able to colour and compose like that. Everything seems too.. un-stimulating so far. I need more practise ::nods::.

12:40 am - Circles; it'd make things.. less... pointy.
|
Buru mentioned a lot of things tonight.
For the most part, what stuck with me was: -3's instead of duality. -Human Evolution - how we've achieved survival, and therefore questioning if there's really any need or necessity behind further evolution. This brought up ideas of self-evolution. -Circles instead of squares.
Evolution, particularly, got my brain turning. Ideas like how we might evolve according to the world we've created around us (eg. pollution), self-improvement biologicly or technilogicly, instrumentality (if I've got that word right). Different evolutionary paths?
This, of course, provoked a lot of ideas and imagery of worlds or futures that could come.. and brought up thoughts of a potential story in all that. The world would be further pushed by replacing squares with circles, like buru was saying. It makes things seem weird to us.
Wish I had a story for it =X. Had this random little page of drawings of a pirate captain and her 1st mate. But it seemed to scream a bit of Treasure Planet... so. .. Had a lot to do with eyes, too. All the characters seemed to have fucked up eyes. Wonder why that was.. (acid rain XD.. AAAAHHH~ IT BURNS!)

I can't think of an example in a story where the evil do-er's minion isn't intentely evil as well.
Ermmmm.. example of what I mean (possibly):
Seto summons the Blue Eyes White Dragon to fight Yu-gi, but the blue eyes doesn't refuse (as such the BEWD isn't "good"). Although, in that example you could just say that the monsters in that case are just tools. But maybe later on in the game there's no heart or something, thus the example is nullified.
Hmmm.. Impmon from the 3rd season doesn't apply either.
What I mean is.. You have the Wicked Witch of the West.. and she sends out her evil flying monkey minions, right? Thus, the monkies are evil as well. Sometimes there's a fear factor, example of "Do my work or die" etc.. but.. even still, if you're the classic "good", you won't do that work.
I can't think of an example for what's in my head. I know it's got to exist.. I just can't think of it. Somewhere.. there's got to be a focus on the emo of the minions.. right? Least to say, there's another story at the back of my head.

Series: Original [Yeven and Clones =X] Comments: Just gonna explain where the world comes from. Then maybe get into Yeven's part in it at a later post [despite there being no plot], since I actually have that written down somewhere else, and gawd is it long *_*. I guess Yeven's just all character based. I think.. almost everything I do is. Disclaimer: Boring :X And confusing =D! I have a liking of cloning and the idea of angst and trauma that can go hand in hand with it. Love the imagery. Not like that's conveyed much here. It's long.
( First Degenerates.. )
With any luck.. that made some sense to at least someone out there. I never know if it's just all in my head and only I end up understanding it in the end... *shrugs* Who knows. Look forward to the next exciting installment all about Yeven =D. In the exact same fucked up world XD! But with pictures~!

Pairing: Gaara/Naruto Series: Naruto Comments: This randomly entered my head sometime early in the year, and it got written down [I found it while I was wandering through my random crap directories]. I should never write, or attempt to convey any form of fanfiction. As such, I will pretend that this isn't my first story-based post. Disclaimer: Don't expect actual good writing from me... ever. I don't know how to make words look good. And the odds of fanfiction ever coming from me again is slim to non-existant, unless heavily made fun of. ( Random ficlet idea )

4:42 pm - stories
|
So I thought I might use this space to write down story ideas, or maybe even stories themselves (should I actually get to writing them, instead of just explaining them) since I'm lacking in the "watch all the new anime and talk about it" department.
Maybe... if anyone wants it, I could upload some storyboards as well. I found this really old one about a kid in a car, and his imagination thinking that the other cars were dinosaurs. It didn't really have a plot.. but.. *shrugs*
Will probably talk about Yeven and the world that seemed to evolve around him tonight, or later on in the week (depending on how much work I get done, and how much free time I'll have after that work.), and then maybe about the Sea (Sear? Hmmm..) of Ancients. Otherwise known as the Pillars of Salt in the "current" timeline.
I don't honestly expect anyone to read these ^ ^. I don't think anyone does now, although buru mentioned stopping by here once. But you know.. if you do, and you want to say something, please do.

Well, despite the release date not being until 7 hours from now [or so says the Official Site], circumstances have allowed me to witness this cinematic embodyment of a landmark RPG; the one Final Fantasy VII.
[For reference I've just realised that my CD for the FFVII:Reunion Tracks was lost with my CD Binder at the start of the summer, so I only have the CD Case for the Reunion Tracks now. My opinion may be affected as I grieve for my loss.]

1:18 pm - Anime of Season
|
Well, another season has come.. and technically it came a while ago, but that's besides the point.
There's been a large push for sports anime recently. And I find it strange that Mr.Fullswing hasn't been animated. Granted, I haven't read it, so I'm not entirely sure if it's any good... but there seems to be a decent fanbase for it, so.. I'm wondering.
In light of this: MAJOR - has come out a while ago. No Fansubbers that I'm aware. Watched the raw and can't say I was hooked. Seemed more child orientated than for the regular anime-downloader online. Pitched around baseball and the sort. Not my cup of tea.
BUZZER BEATER - Just came out. Another basketball anime like I'll or Slam Dunk. The difference here seems to be that it's set in the future and people play basketball across the universe. Haven't watched as of yet to know the quality of the animation. The Studio name is also unfamiliar to me. You can find the online comic at the link. Wondering if this one even made it to tankubon form, or if it's purely an online comic. Definetly a different approach to becoming an anime. Might be worth checking out.
Lime Iro Ryuukitan - Not even gonna bother linking this one. This.. was horrible, in my opinion. It was as if some teen male was given a shitload of money to make the anime of his dreams which consisted to be him, or a persona of himself, running around screaming his head off all-manly like only to finally reach his base where his 5 women are waiting for him, and have been fantasizing about him all this time. The first episode ends by him transforming, not with his own powers, but with the power of the girls' love, as their clothes go flying and their love transforms him into some super human fighter. Yea. View at your own discretion.
Starship Operators - I honestly, didn't give this one a chance. The quality of animation was enough to deter me. Their inability to add inbetweens in between their key frames made the animation horrible to watch. They literally slide or jumped into key frames. I couldn't bare watching it any longer. The story didn't seem to compelling either, although, again, I didn't give it a chance.. It seemed like another one of those males dominant over females animes, as such it is chucked from my line-up of what it watch. View at your own discretion.
BECK - I'll say right now that I think the manga is better. But the anime isn't all too bad itself. One of the perks of the anime is that you actually get to here the music and the songs really -do- grow on you. In particular I find Moon on the Water and Pretty Face rather nice. Anyways. It's about the formation of a band and their struggle to become acknowledge in the music world. And it really -is- a struggle, the manga going over 16 volumes now.
Bleach - If you haven't heard of BLEACH yet, then you must be living under a rock. Popular through the manga, the anime only helped the fanbase grow. In my opinion, however, the anime doesn't do the original work on the manga much justice. The animation quality is.. okay, however their change in style from Kubo Tites style wasn't something I was looking forward to. A perk in this anime, apart from others, is the fact that the mangaka actually VAs for one of the characters. Overall it's a good show, and I recommened it. You also won't be disappointed when looking for fics or fanart from the fanbase since it will no doubt grow close to comparison to Naruto with time. I do recommend reading the manga over the anime, however. But for a greater appreciation on the story, watching both will probably bring different aspects of the anime/manga to light that may not have been apparent without the other.
Jinki Extend - I watched the raw of this, and was pretty much impressed. I wasn't too sure what was going on, but I was impressed. The art, the story, and the animation were all decent. A fansub group has been slowly trucking their way with this one, although I haven't had a chance to check out their work. Over all premise seems to be there's these monsters, and a mecha.. to which this one girl gets kidnapped and then suddently hides in the mecha. They fight, they win. Then.. it seems to flash back to the opening of the episode and that same girl [?] is piloting the mecha on her own and fighting something else. Yea, I had no idea what was going on ^ ^. But it's got my attention, so should it be worth while you'll no doubt hear about it again here.
Gankutsuou - By Asashi TV, it's understandable that there are some HEAVY implications in this series between a number of the male characters. Based on the book Count de Monte Cristo, it focuses around Albert and his relationship with the Count. Can't say I've kept up with this one, but Andeburu assures me it is most entertaining. The style might throw you off at first, with their blaring colour schemes, and the most noteable: the complex array of interwoven patterns to make up the basis and colours of the characters, but the animation quality is good along with the storyboarding and scene composition. Much like PMK, Gankutsuou is not lacking in its financial and quality support in its production. Well worth checking out, more so if you're a fan of the book or a fan of shounen-ai.
There were a few more animes this season, a number of them not up my alley [Moon Phase, Mai Hime, Fantastic Children] as well as some other ones worth mentioning [the remake of Ah! My Goddess, Soukyuu no Fafner, Gunbuster 2 etc etc..], however I need to get on to some work for the day.

12:38 am - Incredibly.. something.
|
I have the urge to write I suppose [although I should really be blogging in my personal blog about the past winter break, and the issues that I've talked to my parents about.. which is actually encouraging for a change].
Went and saw The Incredibles today with Sha. The roads were terrible *_*~ I was 2 inches from the steering wheel, hunched over like Quasimodo [splt?] trying to see where the defroster had melted past the freezing rain on my windshield [I ran out of windshield wiper fluid.. And in that rain and snow filled weather.. You need it. Trust me.]
Anyways. The Incredibles: Or even.. before that. Aboundin' I believe it was called. Terrible. I'm sorry. But that, in my opinion, was Pixar's WORST animated short up to date. Yes, the graphics were stunning, the movement was impressive, athe acting was very nice [although I wasn't hot on the character designs].. but the story. .. the story ::shakes head:: ...
Pixar's impressive movie line-up ever since the premier of their Studio with Toy Story has practically ALWAYS been story driven. I ask you: How many fanarts have you seen or done of Buzz Lightyear? of Flik? Of Nemo? The fact is, despite their beautiful graphics, the characters are not what draw people to Pixar's films. Pixar's ability to allow growth OF the characters in their films is also very limited.. the only real exception I can think of would be Dori [splt], but I feel that she stood out because her personality was more of a stereotype and easy to place and identify with. She deals with issues that nearly everyone can relate too: Abandonment. Nearly everyone [I think] has felt abandoned.. isolated.. alone from other around them at one point in their life or another. How many people have lost a son.. or a daughter? How many people have had to go through the hardship of losing someone close to them? Realistically, the answer to that is A LOT.. but the target audience is children. Children who have parents.. and siblings, and grandparents that spoil them when they visit. A lost loved one compared to the general feeling of being abadoned or alone are fairly different in commonality.
[So many tangents]. Point being: Pixar IS story based. And when the story fails.. the movie fails.
In my opinion, this movie failed.
The Incredibles had wonderful jokes, humour, good acting, mediocre characters [although by no means attractive in my opinion and heavily under developed] amazing graphics and absoletly wonderful hair and clotheing movements [although I think they over did the clothes' folds just a little - the gravity of the cloth was impressive though]. But their story...
:: Spoilers ::
One of the things I learned in strybrding was that characters need to have Goals. What was Mr.Incredibles goal? To feel good about himself? To be juste and righteous? To save people? How does he obtain that goal? By going to an island completely away from the world and helping one private company that's main concern is money and their killer invention. Mr.S. What's his goal? To be a super. How does he go about achieving that goal? By threatening the world then saving it. But the world was never really threatened [which was Mr.S's point], however since the audience knows it's not threatened then there really isn't any tension there. Why be worried over the safety of the world if it was never in danger?
:: /Spoilers ::
To me, the story was weak. And so, the film was weak. Pixar just didn't seem to be focused in this one.
However, Edna was the highlight of the film for me. Darlings~

12:24 am - Pern Peril
|
The Dragonriders of Pern (r) are a series of books written by Anne McCaffrey. I fell in love with them as a child, which led to my love of dragons and the art work of [insert name here] who did the covers for the United Kingdom versions of her books and are and will nearly always continue to be what I believe the Dragons of Pern look like.
I'm not sure anyone who reads this has had the pleasure of meeting Ms.McCaffrey, [let alone are interested in her books]. I have. She is a scary woman. Especially when you're thirteen and nothing more than a hobbit that hides themselves in books and fantastical worlds all the time.
Anne is one of the scariest novelist I've ever met. And the only one I know whom actually puts out rules for fanfiction, fanart, and rpgs concerning her world. [This is going on a little long].
One particular "Rule" caught my eye: "5. Pornographic or “slasher” sites, based on any of my literary works, are expressly forbidden. But I’m sure you know that. I’m a grandmother, after all."
Those who know me may know [although more likely wouldn't know] that I had a small comic idea that was in fact "slasher"-ish based in the world Anne had created. I respect her greatly as an author, and everyone has their own opinion on sexual preference, which is fine.. But.. I just find it amusing.
This only make me want to revist those old characters in the world Anne had already made up for those who read her books. What's most amusing, to me, is that it was more that I'd "slashed" the Dragons before the actual human characters.

Didn't think I'd post again so soon, but..
Raf told me that there was a new FFAC trailer. See... now. Personally, I wasn't impressed. Firstly, the sound wasn't timed correctly. I don't think my computer was lagging, but it was definetly off. That.. took away from any positive impression I could have fathomed.
Honestly... it doesn't look like they've made much improvement from FF : Spirits Within. Yes.. it's still impressive.. but it's not obtaining what they're aiming for. The characters aren't human.
One of the faculty at my college said something to our class... He said "If you can do it in live action, then you shouldn't have animated it in the first place." Or something along those lines.
What I didn't see in FFAC was exageration. Now, I know they're going for realism, and by exaggeration I don't mean extreme squash and stretch action.. but. Body movement, for one thing.. and following a close second would have to be mouth and facial expression. Sure, your mouth may seem that closed, and may not move that much when you talk.. but I presonally think you should exagerrate that more than what you see in everyday life. It conveys the feeling better, the expresses their emotion to a "truer" extent. I didn't see that in the trailer ::shakes head::. I guess I won't be as disappointed now when it finally comes out...
I wonder.. if they had an classical animator's on their team for this... I wonder this because even if you are the best 3D computer animator out there.. if you don't know the basics, your animation won't be jack all.
I think square-enix too caught up in the technical aspects of their works. Just because somethings scientifically and mechanically correct in all aspects doesn't mean it'll have a life to it. I think their characters are missing their "souls"... they have the bodies down to every last detail.. but the life just isn't there.
