Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
So I decided to relive part of my youth and watch the first episode of Biker Mice From Mars which I hadn't seen since I was a tiny Sep.

I'd actually not seen it for even longer than it had not been on the air on account of my mother seeing one episode, deciding they didn't treat the girl character well enough and announced I was never to watch it again.

Incidentally, the same reason my dad wouldn't let us see the Smurfs.

I'm... I'm a cultural wasteland.

PS: The above cartoon is fantastically bad. I like how even as cartoons, they still make the mistake of looking directly at the camera.

OTHER NEWS: I joined a journal rpg. It's Middle Earth and I finally get to play a Theoden in the time period (early twenties) I like best about him, although if I could have found the right icon person I might have made a go for mid-teen. So. I'm a happy Sep.

EDIT: In further 'Things From My Childhood', Space Cases is still pretty damn sweet.

I wouldn't let you watch the smurf cartoons either, they are stupid and annoying and twee and add ridiculous characters that don't fit with the spirit of the setting. I would let you read Peyo's Smurf comics and Johan and Peewit comics though.

What did Theoden do in his early twenties?

Well, it was before he became king and was married (he became a king and a widower in pretty much the same year in his thirties) and after (further than I'd like, because I couldn't choose a teenager I liked) he came from Lossarnarch to Rohan, so there's a non-Rohirric upbringing experience right there, and they always struck me as just a touch xenophobic.

Along with this, Thengel, his father, refused the Rohirric tongue under his house and other things lead me to believe he was going for a more Gondorian country during his rule, which I like to think made him a little unpopular, as Theoden during his rule made a point of learning the damn language. This is sort of influenced by an article I saw about things you could infer from Theoden's rule that I rather liked some parts of.

So I'm working with the idea that he's a unpopular prince due to his father and traits from the education he probably received, as well as maybe a little snobby. I may also, for my own amusing, be playing him as a little priss because the game is comedy-ish too.

And my friend is giving him a five year old sister to constantly play off him which is lots of fun.

Disclaimer: This comment may contain inconsistencies and nonsense because I am ultra awkward as I write this and more than a little sleepy.

Oh yes, now that you say it I remember Thengel's 'let's pretend we're civilized people!' thing.

You're right, that actually makes for an interesting character. Certainly more interesting that his drooling-and-mumbling period.

Thank you. I will still not let you watch the smurfs though.

I don't remember which Mario game it was, possibly 3 or lost levels? Anyway, whenever you went down the pipes it was one of X many predetermined shapes, and one of those shapes my sister and I would/will always murmer "Biker Mice From Mars" when it came up, since it sort of looked like a mouse head with the pipes antennae.

Also, as I've already told Hina: <3 <3 <3 at you two joining.

You're right, Biker Mice from Mars was a terrible show. God, I love it.

The same goes for Dinosaucers and Defenders of the Earth, two of my all time favorite cartoons.

(My all time favorite, the Pirates of Darkwater, was excellent.)

Ah, the Smurfs. I remember watching it in high school because my little sister watched it, except sometimes she wouldn't even be in the room and I would sit there staring in sort of muted horrific fascination. Also, I knew all the words to that horrible song from the Christmas special, which I'll admit isn't particularly hard when the whole song is essentially just an endless repetition "Goodness makes the badness go away!" but still.

I remember Smurfette's backstory annoying the living fuck out of me, though. Because of course she was a brunette when she was evil, and of course turning her good turned her blonde. I may have ranted about it repeatedly to anyone who would listen, possibly.

Once, though, one of the smurfs told another one to "smurf off" and that made me LOL.

Really? In the comic she was kind of evil no matter the haircolor, but when she had shorter black hair the smurfs ignored her and when she was blonde the smurfs started doing the dangerous shit she suggested.

She turned good at the end, but that was just an assimilation thing, not because of the change.

I liked her better when she had the strawy black hair and was all ineffectual. That was kind of cute. :|

Yeah, in the Smurfette's Origin episode, she was created by Gargamel as a brunette and was evil, but then Papa Smurf used his magic to cure her of being evil and therefore she turned blonde. It was very annoying. I still bitch about it pretty much anytime anyone mentions Smurfette, actually, because I'm just that lame.

Well yeah, that bit is annoying. And cartoon AU. I'm not sure if you would have liked the comic message any better, but it definitely is a different message.
