Oh, sorry guys. I forgot this part of the talk on insane characters:

The only time insanity can work for a character is when it's kept within safe bounds—minor eccentricities that can even be rather charming. And even then, an insane character is almost never viable as the main character in the story. The audience is rarely comfortable enough with insane characters to want to spend any length of time with them.

Although it's okay to want to use them for sex, I guess, Orson*.

I think you need to step away from the Orson. Being too exposed to that for too long isn't good for anyone.

How did the man who wrote Xenocide come out with this crap? OSC's is one of the few portrayals of obsessive-compulsive disorder in literature that's sensitive, emotionally true, and not hackneyed and trite.

The expression Gerald Butler is sporting in your icon pretty much mirrors mine reading these OSC posts. I do remember reading his how-to write SciFi book back in HS and finding it informative, but I can't remember anything about it.

I also remember reading a criticism of the Enders series that claimed that OSC had written it as a Hitler apologia, complete with some weirdly coincidental(?) biographical parallels between Ender and Hitler.

That icon is rarely not appropriate. I have his sci-fi one, may give it a look. It can't hurt, anyway. I know enough to filter out the crazy.

I'm... not sure what to say about that.

Yeah, pillage the useful information and scorn the stupid stuff. Think of yourself as a creative viking.

Also, I found the Hitler essay!
