I'm surprised no one has mentioned this bit of awesome: Genndy Tartakovsky joins crew of Iron Man 2 as a storyboarder.

December Picspam [01 Dec 2008|12:55am]

hot_daily

[puipui]
December is a time for giving, a time for sharing, a time for making dreams come true, and it is in this spirit that we would like to give the gift of another chance to some of our previous poll contestants, who would've originally had a hell of a lot more votes if frigging Karl hadn't been skewing all our polls for months on end. Let's go!

Poll #428 December Picspam Poll!

How do you say LOL? [01 Dec 2008|01:26am]

breecita
That weird phone whatever commercial with the "With a full keyboard you can say LOL the way you'd really say it" makes me laugh because Donna and I? Say LOL.

Only you know, we're in the South so it sounds like, "Lawwwl."

Perhaps we should be unplugged from the interwebz.

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT PICSPAM BEHIND THE CURTAIN! [30 Nov 2008|07:01pm]

hot_daily

[puipui]
Hello members! As you may have noticed, we've been having some... er... technical difficulties here at Hot Daily today, which are totally due to issues that are technical in nature and not at all due to any sort of coup attempts that may or may not have been crushed under the heel of my vaguely despotic stylishly sexy boot. No really!

So with that in mind, let's just set aside those last two posts and move forward in a spirit of reconciliation, for even though this month's poll may have perhaps been slightly skewed in one man's favor, the people have spoken, your voices have been heard, and there was, quite clearly, one hands-down poll winner.

I'm speaking, of course, of Tickybox.

Oh, Ticky, you're so fine! )

And that's it for this month's third picspam! Tune in tomorrow for next month's poll, which will be full of completely legitimate categories, I promise. XD

Crustaceans! [30 Nov 2008|08:59pm]

I have at least two surviving babby crayfish because I saw two together! YoY

I also bought three of these red claw macro shrimp today and they are awesome. I would show you my own pictures, but they have vanished into the depths of the plants and probably won't be seen again for a week. I'm excited that they have supressed larval development (meaning instead of having a free-swimming larvae stage which is hard to feed and keep alive, they basically hatch as miniature adults and are much easier to raise) because I'd like to hopefully have a bunch of these too. The whisker shrimp I got a couple of months ago don't have a suppressed development so it will be difficult to get any survivors from the bunch in the Battlestar. I may stick a bunch of them in outside ponds in the spring and see how they do out there since people generally have success raising ghost shrimp that way.

The Personal Hell Meme [30 Nov 2008|07:35pm]

pet
If anyone's watching the Jets/Broncos game, the weather here is almost identical, except that it's a couple of degrees colder and the rain is apparently now ICE. Yeesh. Forget the horses. I'm going to stick with what works and stay on my couch, and watch the kajillionaire football players slipping and sliding around that field and LAUGH AND LAUGH. The kickers are gonna earn their salaries today.

I can't do that song-poem meme, because I left my mp3 player at work. I can't do the flickr meme, because I don't actually understand it. So I am going to make my own meme! It's called the Personal Hell Meme.

Personal Hell Meme: You list your least favorite things, then put them together, to show what your own hell would be, should hell exist and should you have the misfortune to end up there.

I think you should all do this. I LOVE seeing the stuff that people hate! )

Oh my god. *SHUDDERS*

All of a sudden, my current life looks TOTALLY BLISSFUL. I am so grateful for the awesomeness of my 13 channels of basic cable, my couch with my choice of music, my totally odor-free apartment, the fine variety of healthy foods in my pantry and the half-read copy of "The Two Towers" on my bedside table. WHOA.

So, if someone had happened to be seduced into reading Merlin fic over Thanksgiving holiday, does anybody know where she could find the show streaming online (in the US)?

Veoh seems to have most of it, but their web player doesn't work right for me, and I'd prefer not to have to download...

Someone claims to have 'won' NaNoWriMo with 2.5 million words, a feat so fantabulous it apparently requires announcing twice.

Unfortunately, checking out his website reveals that he used a less than conventional technique to reach this count:

In order to compile so many words in such a short time, Leach leaned heavily on the Internet. He generated what he calls a “non-linear literary collage” by mining various blogs, chat rooms and fan fiction sites, grabbing whatever words caught his eye.

“The talk pages of Wikipedia and the reader comments on io9.com were my absolute favorites,” he said. “These are my people. I shamelessly plagiarized their words -- even their misspellings and gramatical errors -- at every opportunity, combining the anonymous messages with recycled content from ‘Marienbad My Love’ and entries from my dream journal. I repeatedly cut and pasted and searched and replaced, transforming the various writings into a completely new and unique literary work.”

NaNoers are Not Amused.

Edited to add my favourite reply from the forums so far:

Plagiarizing other peoples' words is not writing. It's plagiarism, pure and simple, contrary to the spirit of Nano.

Not to mention that your pretense is so thick you could stand on it and not worry about sinking for a good three hours.

Charitable Schadenfreude [29 Nov 2008|03:36pm]

fandom_lounge

[jkefka]
So, many of you have probably heard of this or saw last year's, but I thought I'd share it all the same.

Desert Bus for Hope is a charity event for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity. It goes like this: They play the most monotonous video game ever, the legendary Desert Bus for a certain number of hours, with the number of hours based on the donations they get. The donations continue while they play, adding more time. Each hour costs more. They have live streams of the bus, the drivers, and a chat where you can talk to them. Every thousand dollars there's a bit of macrospam on the site in celebration.

As of when I'm posting this, they've been playing for almost 22 hours, out of 101 currently paid for with over $13,000 in donations, and have one point, working on 2. Last year they got $22,800 and six points, the world record. They're looking to break both.

It's good fun for us, torturous for them, and hey, if you're going to contribute to the suffering of others, might as well do it charitably.

ETA: Well, they broke the important record. They just broke $25,000 and counting, committed to 110 hours, of which they've played about 64. They haven't gotten more than 6 points though. They keep crashing.

ETA2: So Gabe and Tycho decided to match the next $10,000 that came in after about $25,500. Current count since the announcement? $5000 has already been donated, bringing them up to 30K and something like 113 hours. There will be at least $5000 coming from PA, probably more as more donations come in. The boys almost cried when Tycho called and told them about it.

Band of Brothers [29 Nov 2008|11:10pm]

[ mood | sad ]

What is it with Band of Brothers hmm? I'm trying desperately to wade through it but it's just so... boring. Maybe it's seeing all these British actors and then them opening their mouths and their accents coming out all wrong. Maybe it's too slow moving and grim.

I dunno.

I've finished the second disc but I don't think I can bring myself to waste more rentals on it. :/

Does it get better?

It's a very, very funny show that's on British TV and is currently in its third season. The second episode aired tonight and I laughed so hard, I nearly broke something.

Here's the link of the new episode.

This has been an incredibly funny series. That there episode? Pushed it into "legendary" status for me. Apparently a lot of other people feel the same way. Just wondering if any of my favourite wankas share this special love?
