I'm not a fan of S9-10, but I have a special place in my heart for fics that fix the travesty of the casual abandonment of Jonas and Langara to the Ori. In Aggravated Destruction of Property, Kalquessa treats us to a delightfully bemused Jonas, faced with a whirlwind of destructive tendencies and a killer smie: to wit, Vala. Because SG-1 doesn't leave its people behind... especially when people write such excellent stories to fix things when canon does!

Why This Must Be Read: Lokei gives us marvelous Teal'c POV as he goes to Daniel's office to confront him in the aftermath of Thor's Hammer. Here is honestly, and pain, and shrewd observations; a glimpse into the poignancy of both their situations, and the essential pragmatism that underlies their natures. I love that this isn't Saint Daniel, but very human Daniel, making a choice and dealing with the consequences.

There can never be enough fics that deal with the repercussions of Teal'c's and Daniel's twisted fortunes, but Lokei's Anvil is more than enough to satisfy!

Why This Must Be Read: Have you ever had a series of novels that you wanted to make people sit down and read? Daniel of Abydos is mine.

Translations and Diplomacy gave us a 14-year-old Daniel who was raised on Abydos and came to Earth when his parents (who opened the Stargate in '82) were killed and his "brother and sister," Skaara and Sha'uri, are taken by Apophis. What follows is a long, lovingly detailed, intricate, fascinating AU, where a teenaged Daniel tries to find his way on Earth... and maybe, just maybe, become part of the SGC - and, when he's old enough, a member of SG-1.

When Brotherhood opens, Daniel is already 16 and has been agitating to join an SG team for over two years. There's a lot of reluctance, both from Jack and Hammond, at the idea putting a teenager at risk - Daniel's previous scheduled trips through the Gate have either been directly to Abydos or to thoroughly vetted safe planets. Can Daniel convince them to let him be part of SG-1?

The friendships between Jack and Daniel, and Teal'c and Daniel, will amaze and delight you. Robert Rothman comes to brilliant, vibrant life. Hammond is awesome beyond belief. The AU versions of Seth, of Legacy, of The Devil You Know, of Pretense mixed with FIAD - they are all beautifully realized, realistically different, and with honest repercussions. Crystal Skull twists fantastically, as Jack (who is more protective of this younger Daniel) ends up getting zapped instead. And trust me when I say that Nightspear's version of Shades of Grey will absolutely break your heart.

This AU series is one of my all-time favorites. Even if (like me) you don't like kidfic, run to read this. And if you do enjoy a younger Daniel... well, what are you waiting for? :)

Why This Must Be Read: When aliens choose to interpret Jack's dedication to the fight against the Goa'uld a little too literally, can the team find a solution before it's too late?

Izhilzha gives us a tense adventure story packed with Jack whumping, great characterization, wonderful teamy goodness, and some fascinating insights into both Jack's and Daniel's heads. Sam works scientific magic, Teal'c is a bulwark of strength, and Daniel - well, Daniel is delightfully himself.

I'd by happier without the multiple "Danny"s, but I'm more willing to forgive that in a story set in S1. And besides, this fic is just plain good. :)

Why This Must Be Read: Once upon a time, I recced Rigel's charming Scraps and Scribbles. Now, Thraesja treats us to a similar feast: a visual exploration of the things that have appeared on Daniel's desk, over the years that he's been at the SGC, complete with brief descriptions and explanations of each image. Much is episode-related, but some (like Vala's magazine collection) is not.

Poignant, amusing, heartbreaking, snarky, sublime - it's all there, and all a marvelous reflection on Daniel, his place at the SGC, and the people who share his world.


Despite being forgiven, Teal’c obviously feels the need to make amends. Daniel’s touched by the sentiment and doesn’t have the heart to tell him that flowers are what you use to apologize to your wife, not to apologize for killing someone else’s.

Why This Must Be Read: Wonderland offers us some highly entertaining glimpses into SG-1's participation in the training exercises in Proving Ground, using two ficlets with alternating POVs - that of SG-1, and that of the hapless recruits who are thoroughly taken down. Add a rather smug Hammond collecting on his bet with Vidrine, and an awestruck recruit who compare getting shot by SG-1 to "getting kissed by Elvis," and you know you're going to find these little stories an absolute delight!

In The Parting Glass, Redbyrd offers us a poignant, painful glimpse into one of the realities of the SGC: the many, many people who never make it back. The story is set against the backdrop of The First Ones, with Daniel's slow and horrified realization of just how many people died. There are memories of Robert Rothman, and the family and friends they've loved and lost, and the soldiers that should never remain nameless.

Everyone gets a little drunk, in the end, as Daniel recites the names of all those who were lost ever since the Tau'ri first ventured into the greater universe. And if you're a little teary-eyed by the end, too... well, I assure you you'll be in good company.

There's the callback to what happened to Reese, Jack's struggle with self-doubts when the man who used to make him question himself is off in Omaland, and Sam's unshakable conviction in the nature of trust. All in all, Aelfgyfu treats us to a powerful character study with an excellent Jack POV, and you'll find yourself shifting perspective along with Jack and Sam.

I love how time has given perspective for Jack, even as it has skipped tracks for Daniel; how the ritual Jack chooses suits him so well, yet works for Daniel, too; the reasoning behind Jack's actions in Menace, and how Daniel puts it all together. And most of all, I love Daniel casually wandering after him in the end - because those two click, and they always will.
