that this post about Ireland would devolve into SOMEONE being ignorant? http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1222654.html?thread=204749310#t204749310
Yes, because how DARE the Irish people expect you to know how to use their language in their country??? I can understand getting frustrated with trying to understand people (it got a little difficult at times when I was there last year) but I never took it out on the people- I was a stranger to their country. This was THEIR home and I chose to come there. I sat and listened to them and by the end of my stay I could generally figure out what was going on and if I was confused I would just ask politely for the person to repeat themselves. Everyone I met there were very kind and more than happy to slow down so I could understand what they were saying when accents got thick.
And how DARE the Irish people name their children in ways that honor their culture and past? It's not like other cultures don't do this. Nope!
Sweet Jeebus... I don't care if I got unfunny in that post. The pretension oozing from those comments just enraged me. I'm not Irish- I'm Irish-American- so I'm not sure if I have any right to feel a little offended but I do.
EDIT: http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1222654.html?thread=204749054#t204749054
I... I don't even know. What a prejudiced little twat waffle.

People like that have no business being in another country, much less living there. I think her attitude is pretty offensive to anyone, no matter who you are.
*nods* Agreed. Between hyeri and witty I pretty damn embarrassed FOR them. Can you imagine some of the things that Irish and the landlords must have said about them?

Yes, I can. I do feel mildly embarrassed for them, but mostly I'm just shaking my head - too bad saying it to their face wouldn't do any good.
So true- ugh... Neither has come back to say much more. Maybe they were shamed into silence.
....
Probably not but a woman can dream.

When in doubt, go hit the intarwebs and dig up a rather spectacular Irish curse.
I've always wanted an excuse to say 'may the devil have sexual intercourse with the worms that will eat you'.

I got to be very good friends with the various sources for Celtic/Gaelic/Irish insults during my RP days (I wrote a character who was Irish and...creative). Who knew it'd come in handy??
Preeeeeetty sure I would love you forever if you could pull that off and just piss the ever-loving-fuck out over that twit.

ANNNNND I LOVE YOU FOREVER!!!
We finally get hilarious, classic, miles-from-unfunny wank, and some xenophobe has to show up and piss on our parade. I'm pretty sure this is why we can't have nice things.
Exactly! The wank was great and funny but then we get twat waffles in the comments bringing the unfunny. hyeri is blatantly offensive and witty is anything but witty.

I remember seeing the "everyone intelligent has left Ireland and everyone who's left sucks" comment very briefly earlier today and thinking "dammit, you bitch, how dare you get wankitywank all over the place just when the funny's finally starting to pick up again!" but then I didn't have a chance to comment and it made me sad. But now I have commented! And I feel better. Also, she's an asshat.
The fact that she just keeps on going and going is amazing. She really doesn't seem to get her own prejudice. You're in someone else's country- they want you to learn certain things. So what if the language isn't used much any more? It's their freakin' country- they set the rules. Either learn to deal with them or leave. No one MADE you move to Ireland and from what I saw last year when I was in Ireland the Irish are getting pretty damn sick and tired of people moving there and trying to change their culture.
Ah, people who remain convinced that when they visit another country, everyone else is a foreigner.
Isn't it great? I really hope that the woman isn't from America originally- I would be so ashamed if she were. Me, I would love to have duel-citizenship- I have a dear friend who was born and raised in Ireland. She has been interviewing for jobs over there and the majority of her family still lives there. She is truly Irish and she sort of rolled her eyes (jokingly of course) at me when I got all excited at this.
The Irish get that their Irish-American counter-parts are anxious to learn more about their ancestry. When people like this woman come along it makes it harder for foreigners (even if our families are originally from there) to get to know the world their ancestors knew.
Sorry- I'm still annoyed by the people who were in my group last year who did nothing but annoy the Irish citizens to the point where I just prayed no one thought me and my family were traveling with them.
Ugh. Now I don't even want to open that wank report. Too bad. As someone who self-identifies as Irish-American (even though I'm more Scots-Irish than anything else), I'd probably enjoy it.
It's highly amusing. Leave it to a fuckwit to come in and spill unfunny all over the damn place. Figures...

This is going to make me angry, isn't?
Probably. The wank itself is funny but things went horribly wrong when there was an innocent question on how to pronounce a name. It spiraled out of control from there and now we have comments in there saying how all the smart people left Ireland years ago and all that's left are the idiots. Thankfully, the response has been a resounding "DO NOT WANT" so it gives me hope.

You see, I could take that as a back-handed compliment, after all, my parents left and are therefore considered smart. However, I am angry for the sake of my numerous aunts, uncles, cousins etc. who still live there.
My mother is loling, I think she is of the opinion that someone that stupid can only be laughed at.
*nods* I have good friends who either still live in Ireland or who have duel-citizenship because they were born in Ireland so it ruffled my feathers. However, I think your mother had the best response to it. Laughing at people this ignorant is the only way to deal with them and keep some of your own sanity.
