02:32 pm - Activism-y Updates Brought to you by The Discovery Channel:
1. Alcatraz goes green: Once a sinister home to notorious mobsters and murderers, Alcatraz is in line for an environmental makeover that could see the imposing former prison island become a tree-hugger's paradise.
Under plans by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area which manages the rugged rock in the middle of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz is poised to be transformed into a beacon for progressive communities. Bald Eagle Taken Off Endangered Species List: he American bald eagle marked a four-decade fight for survival Thursday as the government declared the bird — a national symbol — no longer requires the protection of the federal Endangered Species Act.
"Today I am proud to announce the eagle has returned," Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne proclaimed at a ceremony near the Jefferson Memorial.
The Interior Department made the recovery official by removing the eagle from the list of threatened species under the species protection law. The bird had been reclassified from endangered to threatened in 1995. Read more. 3. Galapagos Islands Threatened: he Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean have been put on a list of endangered world heritage sites by UNESCO because of the growing pressure from tourism, the U.N.'s culture organization said Tuesday.
In a statement released at its headquarters in Paris, UNESCO said that the Galapagos islands were "threatened by invasive species, growing tourism and immigration." Read more.

02:36 pm - I might be crazy but this sounds like fun!
Give me a couple of years (or 5), and I just might be crazy enough to attempt it ;-) Of course, this is assuming I don't die in a month during the Philly Women Only Sprint Length Tri ;-P
That's also assuming I'd be able to qualify. Which I don't think I ever could. Hey schicksal714? You can pull strings for that kind of stuff, right?
But seriously! How cool would it be to be able to say you escaped from Alcatraz?!?
You know, if me and my 9-minute/mile runs and 15-mph bikes could get sponsorship, I could do this thing as a full time gig ;-P Where exactly do I sign up for that kind of thing? Can I put my name in a hat, or something? Is anyone willing to pay me 40K a year to get into better shape, and swim/bike/run around stuff? Anyone-anyone-Bueller-Bueller? I promise I'll improve, and maybe be able to do 8-minute/mile runs and 20 mph bikes one day! (I make no promises about my swimming though.)
I'm turning into a tri dork. And I'm oddly okay with that.
