10:51 pm - State of Fannishness - Always Subject to Change
I was trying to fill in the Interests section of my profile and found it surprisingly difficult to list the fandoms that I've been involved with. So to clarify for me, as well as to any one dropping in, here's the list of shows/movies and primary pairings. Brief flings, innumerable, are not included.

8:29 am - Cheers for shame-based Sex-Ed!
[livejournal.com profile] seperis is hosting a scary-hilarious group reminiscence of highschool sex-ed. Her primary example is apparently one used by those unfortunates who follow Bill Gothard and his teachings. Knowledge of his existence has not made my life appreciably happier, JSYK.

I got my pre-Internet sex-ed via a) educational books my mother bought and then (unsuccessfully) hid away; b) obviously dubious religious texts; and c) some seditious soul who shelved a couple of excellent & queer-friendly sex-ed books in my Roman Catholic school's library. (I ♥ you mystery person!) There were some gender-segregated showings of films on, respectively, menstruation and erections in middle-school science classes, and on pregnancy in highschool 'marriage and family' classes, which left everyone self-conscious and afraid to ask more questions. So there's that.

Did I mention that there's also hilarity in that entry? There totally is.

10:25 pm - Blog Entry: Black Magic/Blood Ties: A “Supernatural” Brotherly Love
Nightcharm, a NSFW gay erotica/porn/pop-culture blog I occasionally peruse, has just put up a post about Wincest and SPN fandom. It's pretty much just an overview and there are no comments yet so no idea what way that will go.
Yes, with Hell On Earth literally imminent in this the show’s most ambitious and fearful story arc ever, the Winchester Boys — sensitive, strapping Sam (the Top) and butch, thick-skulled Dean (clearly the order-barking Power Bottom) — have officially become cult pin-ups. Monsters, witches, and Satan himself are bad enough, but how a gem like this series headed up by two vagrant orphans living off truck stop food and credit card scams managed to survive on a network populated by wealthy, slutty prep school twats and graceless celebutantes is enough to make you believe in a little magic.

4:13 pm - Been in Better Moods
OK, I've tried to write three different posts about Prop 8 and I just can't do it. So here: If, like me, reality show foofaraw tends to pass you by, have a video of Adam Lambert slinking gorgeously through his version of, "Ring of Fire". Described at the site where I first found it as "creepy", "scary", "satanic" and "perverted". Just like all queers!

Fuckem all, Adam. )

9:31 pm - I'm... a little weirded out.
So I decide to spend the evening working on this long, plotty fic I've written a draft for, right? Only, instead, I end up writing a graphic two-page m/m sex scene. What?! This makes no sense. All my old ::gestures into the dim past:: fics had long angsty scenes with characters sat in dark rooms, wearing black turtlenecks suffering existential crises. And if they even thought about getting it on, giant fade-to-black holes appeared and sucked them into the little death oblivion.

ION, I am trapped between the Scylla of pronoun confusion and the Charybdis of using-first-names-too-much. I have read of this quandary, but never before experienced it! And will anyone read fic that's in the present tense? And what if I switch POV in the middle but totally mark where it happens and have separate paragraphs and everything?

::facepalm::

9:20 am - If the count grows to over ten thousand, they'll just have to make smaller gravestones.
[info] - livejournal.comjoe_haldeman, Vietnam veteran and author of The Forever War, on Memorial Day
There's a lot of pious and sometimes well-meaning celebration of the sacrifices soldiers and sailors and airmen have made for our freedom and dignity over the years. Many of the boys and girls under those stones agreed, and went willingly to join the silent legions of the dead. Many of them, if they could, would join me now in saying cut the crap. War is the controlled use of force to bring about political ends. It's young people asked to murder strangers to protect the fortunes of the old. In its final escalation it may kill us all.

8:13 am - Monaco BBC Pre-Quali Show (no race-related spoilers)
That drive with DC was just about the cutest thing I've ever seen. DC was glowing. And what was with the romantic music at the start? That, along with the massage pic, (not to mention the pink shirts and the references to how close their rooms are), and it makes me think they're trying to get DC and Jake slashed. (I'd search for relevant photos but I live in fear of spoilers. I haven't even watched Quali yet.)

ETA: behold the (staged) pic of Jake giving DC a rubdown
Jake Humphries puts some effort into massaging David Coulthard's shoulders. DC blisses out. Both wear pink shirts.

8:39 am - It's All Connected
I just finished Life. Since the current word is that Life is canceled, I'm glad it ended in what I felt was a good stopping point, but I would prefer that there be more. A lot more. I think I'm going to be seeking out Damien Lewis' other roles, but I don't want to lose Charlie Crews just yet. Maybe it'll be OK if I restrict my viewing to Lewis' British roles. (This is where I say I can't believe dude isn't American. If he slipped up even once with his accent, I sure didn't catch it.)
spoilers for the whole show )

And also I might kinda really want to see a Fast and Furious/Life crossover. What? Charlie's an LAPD cop, he's been in prison, he likes souped-up cars, he struggles with forgiveness, and there was that whole thing with the rocket fuel, even.

10:24 am - Wii Reinforce Societal Prejudices?
[info]jonquil hosted a discussion about the Wii Fit on her LJ. It sounds incredibly frustrating, actually. I've thought about using one of these (leaving aside the purchase price issue) as a way to get a little exercise in when I can't leave the house. A program, however, that says — and pictorially represents — nasty things about your body, nags you if you miss a day, and considers BMI the be-all of "fitness", is very much the last thing I need.

Dom loves Brian.
Even though Brian is kinda a fuck-up.
You can tell by the way he looks at him.
Dom kinda loves Brian

minor pictorial spoilers for Fast and Furious )

Yes, I do appear to be pimping Fast and Furious (even though I had definite issues with the movie.) To what end? You decide. BTW, there are four of these movies, but I've only seen the first and fourth, not coincidentally the ones the with Vin Diesel.

10:52 am - Brian's Boyfriend is Soooo Cool - The Fast and the Furious
This is Brian.
Brian really likes Dom.
And Dom just did something way cool.
You can tell by looking at Brian's face.

Brian with stars in his eyes, reacts to the wonder that is Dom

For more of Brian's reactions to Dom, you might want to check out [info]skipmcgee's B/D picspam.
[Warning: Don't scroll past the shotgun if you don't want to see anything from the latest movie]

Also, [info]talitha78 made a very amusing - and hot! - new Bri/Dom vid (also spoilerrific)
[Warning: Britney Spears is involved]

As for fic, I've been reading a lot lately and not really been stopping to write up recs. quarter_mile [LJ] [Dreamwidth] is the place to go. It's pretty B/D intensive but all pairings and gen are welcome.

2:07 pm - Feeling Entitled Much?
Every once in a while I strike out on my own looking for fic in some not-so-popular fandom. I go in prepared to encounter a lot of dreck and hoping for a few bright spots and that's generally what I find. OK, then. What I don't expect and am running across all too often is astonishingly rude feedback.

I'm not talking about requests for a quick once-over with spellcheck or a beta (though I'm not one to make such comments unless the author has invited them.) Neither am I speaking of the privilege checks that writers need to hear (e.g., Dude, um, that's a racist term you have [character a] using and it would get his ass kicked by [object of character a's affections]. It's also pretty alienating for some of your readers. You might want to do some research or have someone who's familiar with the language look this over for you.)

No, alas, I'm talking about this sort of WTFery (actually observed in the wild):
  • a real writer would post something longer or not post at all
  • You suck. [character A] would never like [character B]. You should just stop writing.
  • I might consider reading more of your stuff if you meet the [list of personalized requirements as regards to plot, characterization, and style]
  • this was alright LOL but now you should write [totally different pairing or fandom] cuz I really want to read that instead
  • let me show you my [long uninvited critique of everything I think you did wrong here]
  • I can't believe you took a whole week to write this. You need to post more often or I'm going to stop coming here.
When someone posts a fic it is a gift to hir fellow fans. Granted, it might be a lousy gift, totally not your size and badly knitted, but someone is making an effort here. And in small fandoms where no one is spoilt for choice, doesn't it make sense to err on the side of encouragement? Heck, this is the Net; you don't even have to fake a smile and pretend it's what you've always wanted, you can just choose not to comment! (And if it's so OTT you feel the need to celebrate the badness, you can strip identifiers and chortle over it in your own space, right?)

Anyway, is rude feedback a thing in fandoms that don't have a strong community? Or am I just lucky to have not stumbled across this kind of asshattery elsewhere?
