| Crustaceans! |
[Nov. 30th, 2008|08:59 pm] |
I have at least two surviving babby crayfish because I saw two together! YoY
I also bought three of these red claw macro shrimp today and they are awesome. I would show you my own pictures, but they have vanished into the depths of the plants and probably won't be seen again for a week. I'm excited that they have supressed larval development (meaning instead of having a free-swimming larvae stage which is hard to feed and keep alive, they basically hatch as miniature adults and are much easier to raise) because I'd like to hopefully have a bunch of these too. The whisker shrimp I got a couple of months ago don't have a suppressed development so it will be difficult to get any survivors from the bunch in the Battlestar. I may stick a bunch of them in outside ponds in the spring and see how they do out there since people generally have success raising ghost shrimp that way. |

| | The Format -- 'One Shot, Two Shots' | ] | Someone claims to have 'won' NaNoWriMo with 2.5 million words, a feat so fantabulous it apparently requires announcing twice.
Unfortunately, checking out his website reveals that he used a less than conventional technique to reach this count:
In order to compile so many words in such a short time, Leach leaned heavily on the Internet. He generated what he calls a “non-linear literary collage” by mining various blogs, chat rooms and fan fiction sites, grabbing whatever words caught his eye.
“The talk pages of Wikipedia and the reader comments on io9.com were my absolute favorites,” he said. “These are my people. I shamelessly plagiarized their words -- even their misspellings and gramatical errors -- at every opportunity, combining the anonymous messages with recycled content from ‘Marienbad My Love’ and entries from my dream journal. I repeatedly cut and pasted and searched and replaced, transforming the various writings into a completely new and unique literary work.”
NaNoers are Not Amused.
Edited to add my favourite reply from the forums so far:
Plagiarizing other peoples' words is not writing. It's plagiarism, pure and simple, contrary to the spirit of Nano.
Not to mention that your pretense is so thick you could stand on it and not worry about sinking for a good three hours. |

So, many of you have probably heard of this or saw last year's, but I thought I'd share it all the same.
Desert Bus for Hope is a charity event for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity. It goes like this: They play the most monotonous video game ever, the legendary Desert Bus for a certain number of hours, with the number of hours based on the donations they get. The donations continue while they play, adding more time. Each hour costs more. They have live streams of the bus, the drivers, and a chat where you can talk to them. Every thousand dollars there's a bit of macrospam on the site in celebration.
As of when I'm posting this, they've been playing for almost 22 hours, out of 101 currently paid for with over $13,000 in donations, and have one point, working on 2. Last year they got $22,800 and six points, the world record. They're looking to break both.
It's good fun for us, torturous for them, and hey, if you're going to contribute to the suffering of others, might as well do it charitably.
ETA: Well, they broke the important record. They just broke $25,000 and counting, committed to 110 hours, of which they've played about 64. They haven't gotten more than 6 points though. They keep crashing.
ETA2: So Gabe and Tycho decided to match the next $10,000 that came in after about $25,500. Current count since the announcement? $5000 has already been donated, bringing them up to 30K and something like 113 hours. There will be at least $5000 coming from PA, probably more as more donations come in. The boys almost cried when Tycho called and told them about it. |

So, in light of this (don't read if you don't want to know about stupid batman spoilers) I decided to give you a post on why Grant Morrison is stupid. I'm not sure where my dislike started. It was probably Animal Man, though. Goddamn fucking Animal Man. Whether he was comparing the seal hunt to ripping out dolphin fetuses and using them for toys, turning entire storylines into nonsense about Animal Man being a comic character until I was so bored I just didn't give a fuck about the plot anymore, or dedicating an issue to talking about his dead cat when they finally fire him, Morrison didn't exactly please me on that title.
Admittedly, he's still above Garth Ennis because it'd be damn hard to suck worse than Thor: Vikings(of which I swear I wrote a review for, but it seems to have disappeared? Goddamnit. I'll write a new one), which is -1000 points in writer rankings.
Anyway, in-between making bestiality jokes about Morrison because I'm classy, it descended into references to one of my very first contributions to scans_daily.
It was Animal Man.
This thread is lovely and notable as well as a good example of why I don't like Grant Morrison through the eyes of his fans.
John: do not let your eagle daughter hang out with him Ann: D: D: D: John: although that's more a warning for colbert and his eaglechild Ann: Stephen jr is a boy. John: would that stop morrison? Ann: D: John: he'd probably make it wear a little eagle dress Ann: Shut up. John: then he'll write a comic about it. And the eagle will realize it is a comic character and not stop talking about it. John: people will praise it as a work of genius. John: while mating with another eagle, the dialogue will say 'we fell like fighting superheroes' |

[Nov. 30th, 2008|02:12 am] |
It's a very, very funny show that's on British TV and is currently in its third season. The second episode aired tonight and I laughed so hard, I nearly broke something.
Here's the link of the new episode.
This has been an incredibly funny series. That there episode? Pushed it into "legendary" status for me. Apparently a lot of other people feel the same way. Just wondering if any of my favourite wankas share this special love? |

| All of my favorite sites are having sales |
[Nov. 28th, 2008|04:49 pm] |
Sarracenia Northwest is having their holiday sale now. Most items are marked 15% off but some are marked as high as 30% off. (I can't find the 50% off items they mention in their banner but I don't mind much.) txtriffidranch recs these guys all the time and I have to rec them as well. I've gotten carnivores from them and then gotten what are basically rescue carnivores from Lowe's and let me tell you, the difference is amazing. Even the pitcher plant I got from a local nursey can't hold a candle to the plants these guys send out, even after being shipped across the country.
So if you're looking to try something a little different, I reccommend picking up a Cape Sundew. They're really attractive, super easy to keep (mine live in an Ikea glass thing with gravel on the bottom and peat on the top and catch lots of gnats that bounce off the window they sit in.) and just plain interesting. I got these and some Asian pitcher plants as gifts for people last year. |

My house smells really good right now. Too bad it's because I'm seasoning my cast iron skillet instead of making food.
Actually, I think while the oven's on anyway, I'm going to go make those cider cupcakes. |

So there's a new Issue (expansions, kind of?) city of heroes coming out and with them comes special free stuff for each character on your account.
As a result, I'm in a push to create new characters so they'll have the free stuff saved up for when they're higher levels. I've only got one left that I'm considering right now, so \o/.

A little Thanksgiving-themed wank for those celebrating the holiday! And heck, I guess those who don't can enjoy it too. I'd like to think of myself as a fair gal.
So Furaffinity, a website for furry-themed art, changed its top banner for the holiday. Rather than the usual theme for these sorts of things like some character chasing a turkey/a bunch of people sitting down to a meal/a disappointed dude watching the Lions lose game number 5 million, they decide to instead go a different route.
Namely by having their two mascot characters laying on a couch looking morbidly obese. On the original artist's upload there are both positive and negative comments along with much proclaiming that their fetish is NOT OK.
Within minutes there are many journals on the subject. Some displaying total disgust about the subject manner while others tell everyone to (pun intended) lighten up.
In one journal the head of the site, Dragoneer, mocks the people who are complaining about the banner: "Thousands of angry furries who can not take a joke are lining up!" He also edits the news post announcing the banner change to have what is supposed to be a link to a forum post discussing the subject, but is instead our old friend the Rickroll. There IS an actual discussion thread in the forums however, with the title "New Banner is tastless and disgusting". The poster of this thread, Rilvor, wants to start a petition to have the banner removed.
Rilvor: "I would like to start a petition to have it removed. That banner makes me physically ill every time I see it. I do not appreciate having such content in this fandom, which I make a point to avoid, thrust into my face."
The thread so far contains five pages of arguing over whether the banner is disgusting or not and people reminding others that it's only going to be up for 24 hours.
ETA: Thanksgiving is over, and as expected, the banner is gone. However journals about it continue to appear!
"All this pissing and moaning about the banner. I like the banner. I don't like the banner. Journals and forums and fucking petitions.
You know what? People in DR Congo and Somalia are being attacked by rape gangs and war lords, their families are being murdered. People in North Korea are starving to death on the street. Massive terrorist attack in India. Etc." |
