Spread this Meme: Pretty Bird Woman House

I am spreading this meme (via meyerlemon and musesfool). If you haven't seen this on your flist already, please take a moment to read about Pretty Bird Woman House, a women's shelter located on the South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Reservation. I will quote memlu here:

In recent weeks the shelter has suffered a number of damaging and potentially final setbacks. The phone lines were cut, then eventually repaired. A group of unknown men vandalized and raided the shelter, walking out with clothing, toiletries, computers, anything they could carry with them. After a second break-in the staff deemed the house temporarily unsafe. They relocated to unheated, donated office space.

The day after they moved, arsonists set fire to Pretty Bird Woman House.

PBWH is dependent on a number of grants, some of which require that they provide shelter to battered women and their children. If Pretty Bird Woman House cannot provide this shelter, they will lose the money they need to continue helping the women of Standing Rock Reservation.

Both the links above have information on how you can help PBWH survive, and continue to give assistance to women and their children in danger and in need of shelter and help.

x-posted to LJ

User pics - we use them, we love them, and love to admire other's. Let's dig a little bit deeper into this...

Comment on this post. I will choose seven userpics from your profile and you will explain what they mean and why you are using them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so others can play along.

Keywords: Sponsie crazy monkey. Sponsie is from a Victorian sex-ed manual. For children. Starring a monkey. As is often the case with such things, the lovely Ms. Larimer aka phosfate alerted me to it.

Keyword: cupcakes! You know, I don't even remember. I know a bunch of people had "the revolution will come with cupcakes" icons. Maybe it was a dl_anon thing? I'm pretty sure someone else has this exact same one. All I know is I think any revolution will be all the better for having cupcakes.

Keywords: annoyed this time. That's Kitty Pryde from the X-Men (my girl!). She was asking her then-boyfriend Pete Wisdom who was attacking them, and who he had annoyed this time. It seemed appropriate for FW usage.sepiamagpie made it.

Keywords: I want to wear hats. sepiamagpie made some "I want to wear hats" icons, and this one was my favorite. It's just a cool icon, and I like using it because it confuses people when they try to read meaning into it. :D

Keywords: everyone hates you. Eddie Izzard! Made by the wonderful infintemonkeys over on LJ. I find it incredibly useful when conversing with asshats.

Keywords: insult her cookies! by elfy. Oh man. This came out of the big fandom_love blow up, in which we all wanked long and mightily. Elfy was banned by the JF admins for fighting with them. And someone on FW (I don't remember who) compared the whole argument to fighting over cookies (Journalfen itself being the cookies that the admins were offering, and the wankers saying, "hey, these cookies are burnt" and then the cookie bakers being insulted over this criticism of their cookies). So, yeah, a reminder of an old wank, in which we all looked pretty silly. Elfy went on to make many text icons of things said during that argument, and after. This one I don't think I've used since, but others I use often.

Keywords: what were you thinking penguins. Also made by infinitemonkeys! I felt it was very appropriate for wank comms. Plus, I like penguins. :D

My thoughts on lol_meme: Let me show you them!

Oh, hey, is our assigned topic this week lol_meme? I can work with it. Here's my essay:

So, right, lol_meme hasn't always been kind to me, or to my friends. Unfortunately, it seems like every time I've ever looked at it, it's always been something horrible about me or my friends, and that made me feel bad. I have been told by various memers that it's not always like that, it's fun and supportive and has changed their lives for the better, and while it's certainly not my experience, I don't see why it can't be theirs.

But, you know, so what if I feel bad (and yes, I can say that *now*, when I'm not feeling particularly LOL SENSITIVE! :D). fandom_wank has certainly made a lot of people feel bad, and I'm not a huge hypocrite - we tell people all the time don't read FW if you don't like it, and following those lines, I don't have to read lol_meme if I don't like it. And so, I don't (usually. I need to learn not to click on links if I'm feeling masochistic. THIS IS A BAD IDEA)! Thus, my feelings are not hurt, and lol_meme goes happily about its memeing ways, and we don't get involved with each other. I know, I know, I make it all sound so simple! But here's the thing, I don't want to think about people saying shit about me anonymously, because then I think about all the people that I know are on the meme, and then I think, well, they must be the person saying shit about me, and... that way lies madness. Better to not read. And, okay, I am not really so self-absorbed as to think lol_meme is talking about me all the time. It's just that that's what I've seen when I've looked at it. ;)

As for the whole "lol_meme is taking up too much bandwidth and is being rude to the admins" kerfuffle? So not my business or my problem. The meme mods and Robin and ZR will work this out on their own. I *did* comment in ZR's journal on the post where everyone seemed to joining in, and here's why: as a long-time FW member and mod, I can understand why the meme and their mods might feel threatened, and be worried about the meme's future. So yeah, even if I don't particularly like the meme, I totally get why it sucks to feel like a community you care about, no matter how silly and stupid it is, might be in trouble.

Finally, I have said it before and will say it again: I don't like anonymous posting. It's not my thing. But everyone has their own fun online, and it's not up to me to tell anyone where they can post and how they can post. I don't have to participate, if I don't want to, so I don't. So, the meme can be merrily memeing without me. No great loss for them, I am sure. :D

Okay, I hope that's sufficient for "My thoughts on lol_meme week."

I think one of my favorite comments on why everyone should just let the whole CC plagiarism thing die is this one from fearsclave:

I view plagiarism as something that gentlemen do not do. Like get caught in flagrante with the Royal Welch Fusiliers' goat.

Gentlemen also do not start screaming at length about what Mr. X was found doing with said goat, and vindictively and obsessively cataloging every single incident where Mr. X was seen in public with a barnyard animal in the vicinity, and accusing them, on the flimsiest evidence, of cheating at cards, backing out of duels, and adulterating the Archbishop of York's claret with arsenic. Doing so displays character flaws worse than Mr. X's little predilection for Royal Goats.

Which. Um. Okay.

So gentlemen don't plagiarize or engage in bestiality, but when they do, other gentlemen never say anything like, "I daresay old chap, I think plagiarism's not really cricket. Our kind don't practice that sort of thing. Don't you think you should own up to it, you know, make a clean breast of it? Oh, and please stop handling my dog in such a manner. Sir. Sir! I mean really, let's stop making such a mess of things, old boy!", because discussing plagiarism and bestiality is much much worse than actually practicing it.

(I wonder if gentlemen also get a free pass on rape, murder and pedophilia, or if it's only bestiality and plagiarism that are just trifling oversights.)

Lesson learned: If a gentleman breaks into another gentleman's home, and steals his belongings and touches his pets in bad places, it's all water under the bridge! No big deal, gentlemen never would discuss that sort of thing. Now, can someone give me the home addresses of these fandom gentlepeople? I've got some belongings I'd like to borrow.*

Also, evidently, gentlemen don't know how to read if they think people saying, "Hey, that Cassie Claire's a plagiarist" also means everyone is running around accusing her of other crimes. Which I've seen no evidence of. I'd ask gentlemen to point it out, but like I said, gentlemen cannot read. Which is probably why plagiarism doesn't bother them.

*For the humor impaired among us, an obvious joke. I do not plan to embark on a crime spree.

A new law!

You guys know Godwin's Law, right?

Well, I want a new law. I want a law that says: Whenever two (or more) groups of people are arguing, anywhere on the web* (usenet, mailing lists, message boards, blogs, etc.), inevitably, someone on one side of the argument (regardless of age or gender) will compare the group on the other side to "those bitchy girls who made everyone's life hell in high school."

If I've learned anything at all from Internet Retard Slapfights, that's it.

Additionally: When this happens, if the person who made this comparison is validated with tales of "just how mean the bitchy girls were to ME in high school," the argument is over, and the side making the comparison has lost.

If however, the other side responds with the EXACT SAME COMPARISON, both sides have lost, and the argument should be declared dead for all eternity.

(I know, that last part is wishful thinking.)

So, there's the new law. Call it Snacky's Law, call it The High School Bitches Law, call it The Stop Yer Whining and Move On Law, hug it and pet it and call it George, whatever, but you all should know, I'm putting it into effect as of right now. *g*

*I thought at first this law should be applicable only to Fandom arguments, but I've seen it happen on corners of the web, far, far away from Fandom, so it goes for every internet argument.
