9:28p Frank Miller in the NY Times
Hooboy. The NY Times has an article about Frank "WHORES" Miller and the film adaptation of The Spirit:
Artist-Director Seeks the Spirit of "The Spirit" Mr. Uslan approached Mr. Miller with “The Spirit” before Eisner’s memorial service in Lower Manhattan. He had seen “Sin City” and was impressed by its digital fidelity to Mr. Miller’s comics.
“‘Frank, Will was your mentor; you’ve got to write and direct this,’” he recalled saying. “And Frank looked at me like I was out of my mind. He said: ‘Touch the work of the master? How could I do that?’ About 10 minutes later he tapped me on my shoulder and said, ‘I can’t let anyone else touch it.’” Um.

4:20p I'm not at all convinced that I can keep his up, though.
Number of comment fics written for the Whovian Nights thingie from March through mid-July: 13
Number of comment fics written for the Whovian Nights thingie from July 16, 10:00pm (apx.) through July 18, 4:00pm (apx.): 17
Page 5 is full of them! Spoilers abound! I'm hoping to be able to manage a one-per-day average this month (for the first time since February!) but I need to find more external sources for prompts, hrm.
Also, as much as I kind of detest the episode for various reasons, I need to rewatch "The Long Game" so I can finish that fic about the Editor that's been half-written for almost a month now, but the CD/DVD drive on my computer is so horked up lately that I'm not sure I can get my copy of it to play. I'll have to get a real one from the library or something, more hrm.
Still, though. 17! Eeee! Go me! *\o/*
ETA: Also, OMG, I can't believe I almost forgot to mention, but some very kind mousie has translated Now That's a Cock, Hey-o! into Chinese! Is that not awesome? :D :D :D

In case you hadn't seen it, "Why film schools teach screenwriters not to pass the Bechdel test", a particularly enlightening (and depressing) article about how female characters (and other minorities) are still viewed in film and TV by the people who make it.
An excerpt:
There was no way Hollywood really believed what it was saying about boys who’d grown up with Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor as action heroes, and so there was no way to change the system from within. I concluded Hollywood was dominated by perpetual pre-adolescent boys making the movies they wanted to see, and using the “target audience” - a construct based on partial truths and twisted math - to perpetuate their own desires. there was no way to change the system from within. ---> I've seen fangirls say that they someday hope to make it into film and change things around. I hope they don't become discouraged. However, I'm often discouraged as there's always the self-internalization of misogyny and that fangirls (SPN misogyny wanks being a shining example) don't know or don't care at all about this sort of thing.
The Fifth Element only barely passes the Bechdel test (the one instance I can recall is Leeloo talking to one of the singer's guards), as does RHPS (Columbia and Magenta in the "Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a Me" scene), and I don't think American Psycho does. Man of La Mancha - I can't recall. Dexter does, Heroes does.
On a movie-related note, my cousin has invited me along to TDK tomorrow. Score.
My uncle is in the hospital with the same thing that killed his father :( Blood clots moving up to his chest. We're all worried, but he should be okay. He'll just be on medicine the rest of his life. And they don't have health insurance, and they've stuck him in the CC for at least a couple more days.

2:27p video game n00b requests aid.
So I recently found out that I'm going to be very sick for a very long time before it starts to get better, which involves long stretches of time in which I can't really get out or be active. Since the Internet can, actually, get dull after awhile, I did what any reasonable person would do - I bought a video game console =D More specifically, a DS.
Yes, this is another game rec thread. But it's got one stipulation: I'm really bad at video games. I haven't played since the original Nintendo, and too many controls and buttons make me a sad panda. In spite of that, I really like games with complex stories and lots of characters and overarching plots, so I guess I was wondering if there are games like that for the beginner/low skill level set. I'd hate to drop all this money and immediately get frustrated because I'm attempting to play above my skill level.
So far, I have a Nintendog, because... well, I love puppies ;D What else should I look in to?

11:45a Game Center CX/Arino's Challenge RPS?
I realize this may sound a little odd, but I've been watching Game Center CX (thanks to the fine folks at TV-Nihon) and ever since the hot springs specials, I've been thinking about Arino/AD Toujima.
I know it's a longshot, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Rule 34 and all that, right?

10:53a >:(
Either it was the MFing raccoon or a squirrel, but either way, someone dug up my venus fly-trap outside and by the time I found it a few minutes ago, the Virginia heat had reduced it to dried up nothing. Goddamnit!

Since it hasn't been pimped over here yet, that I know of, and is probably relevant to the interests of at least a few of you:
2008 DCU FEMSLASH PORN BATTLE
It's running through August 1st. And if you know animated canon, but not comics' canon, there's prompts for that, too! Get writin'.
