I cry every time I read this story. I cry because it's tragic and so well-done that when it delivers its punch, it's impossible to hold back tears. There's nothing cheap in there, no expression to make the readers roll their eyes in exasperation, which is all the more valuable given the type of scenario: Snape finds a young whore Harry in Knockturn alley.

It's a short story, just a bit over 5,000 words but it brilliantly proves that one doesn't need many words to evoke strong emotions or to show the warmth of relationship (very strange, even unconventional, but it works). I love the way the author takes canon conflict Harry vs Voldemort and makes it at the same time unobtrusive and essential. Because of the shortness of the piece, the economic way and precise intonation in which it all is put together, the eternal tragedy of destiny vs private existence becomes very focused and sharp.

The story will make you cry. But please, don't shy away from it! They are good tears, the best you can shed. Cry for the poor, charming boy Harry. Cry for Severus. Cry for everything they had and didn't have. These tears will make you a better person.
