snarry_reader's Journal Title: Knockturn in the Rain Author: Dayse Rating: NC-17 Author’s Warnings: AU, Chanslash. Story Link: http://www.sparklydanceboys.com/nobleho Author’s Livejournal: Author’s summary: Severus Snape meets Harry Potter in Knockturn Alley. Length: short Reviewer: I cry every time I read this story. I cry because it's tragic and so well-done that when it delivers its punch, it's impossible to hold back tears. There's nothing cheap in there, no expression to make the readers roll their eyes in exasperation, which is all the more valuable given the type of scenario: Snape finds a young whore Harry in Knockturn alley. It's a short story, just a bit over 5,000 words but it brilliantly proves that one doesn't need many words to evoke strong emotions or to show the warmth of relationship (very strange, even unconventional, but it works). I love the way the author takes canon conflict Harry vs Voldemort and makes it at the same time unobtrusive and essential. Because of the shortness of the piece, the economic way and precise intonation in which it all is put together, the eternal tragedy of destiny vs private existence becomes very focused and sharp. The story will make you cry. But please, don't shy away from it! They are good tears, the best you can shed. Cry for the poor, charming boy Harry. Cry for Severus. Cry for everything they had and didn't have. These tears will make you a better person. Title: Minor Arcana Author: Isolde Rating: R for novel 1 and 3, NC-17 for novel 2. Author’s Warnings: Story Link: http://archive.skyehawke.com/authors.ph Author’s Livejournal: cursive Author’s summary: In Harry’s 7th year a wizarding tradition is being revived. It seems to have trapped Snape, Draco and Harry in a strange triangle, but that’s only part of the problem. Slash. Slash, het, femmeslash. SS/DM, HP/DM, SS/HP, HG/RW, DM/RL, and others. Length: novel-length Reviewer: The story consists of three completed novels - Declaro, Pervinco, and Consensio. Minor Arcana, as I came to think, offers everything a satiated and experienced reader's mind could wish. It's exquisite. It's sophisticated without being overdone. The plot is built around the revival of an old and long ago forgotten ritual, the Rite of Engagement. A precise portion of politics makes the novels very persuasive in channeling and building upon various canon ideas. But at the same time Minor Arcana is not just a political novel. The device of the Rite also allows the author to make a frail and intricate construction of relationships and intrigues. Pairings/relationship form and break, strengthen and hang on the brink of disappearing, and Harry (who's charmingly clueless) has to struggle through it all to get what he wants -- when he knows what is is, of course. Add some mystery caused by unexpected and complicated gifts and magical artifacts, hidden Death Eaters' plots, unpredictable behaviour of the main characters (believably) grounded in their (very credible) psychology. Add also very strong sexual undercurrent. And you'll get one of the best and more complex fics in HP fandom. A brilliantly written one, too. |
