I don't know if it's possible to review it without spoilers. Harry is a girl, a beautiful, sweet fifteen-year-old girl who likes sitting and squirming in his uncle Vernon's lap, who's afraid of getting married or pregnant, who likes raising his skirts and showing his pretty knickers, and who enjoys his bottom being pinched by his uncle's friends. Yes, his. Intrigued?
I wouldn't even call this fic AU, I would call it a flight of fancy; it's a kind of weird channish fic where reality is distorted and bizarre.

I'm smiling now, remembering this story. Odd, sweet, kinky, even maybe somewhat disturbing but wonderful.

This fic is hilarious. Mahaliem has a very special talent: her humour. It's a bit strange, a bit absurd, lovely, warm and -- which is a rather rare thing -- really funny. She's written the funniest Veela story I've ever read (The Obligatory 'Draco is a Veela' Story that Every HP Fanfiction Author has to Write), a sweet and funny "Ron sets out to convert Slytherins" fic (Checkmating) and many other wonderful things. This fic, god, I nearly choked on my coffee. Go read, you won't regret!

I'd say the fic is cathartic. Harry is in St Mungo's, catatonic. He's wasting away. Snape refuses to give him up. He talks to him, trying to get to him. Then kidnaps him to bring him to the place where Harry would - possibly - like to die if it depended on him. But despite this plot, when I think of this story, the words that come to my mind aren't "tragic" or anything of the kind; they are "beautiful" and "poetic."

Length: novel-length

Reviewer: [info]painless_j

I was blown away when I first read this fic. It has plenty of kinks I don't like, but it's so powerful that I was unable to stop reading and so memorable and original that it's impossible to forget.

The story is a dystopia where the side of Light has lost. After long months of imprisonment, Harry, Ron and Hermione have to face the prospect of becoming slaves -- without any rights or even names. They are taken by Snape for tuition and training and surrounded by weird creatures. The training is hard, aimed to break and recreate them as something else entirely.

Beside being dark, the universe is really bizarre. But it has certain logic. Yes, it's dark but Snape here has enough ambiguity and dark appeal to keep his new slaves on tiptoe, torn between self-loathing and disgust on the one hand and fascination and attraction on the other.

The author masterfully plays on the differences in Harry, Ron and Hermione's psychology to move the story along. Who will submit first and why? How will they fight and why? What is this strange place they happened to be locked in? What are those creatures that sort of serve them but sort of own the place?

It's not a fic to be missed, really.

Length: short

Reviewer: [info]painless_j

Sirius is back with atrophied senses. Of course Harry volunteers to gradually bring him back to health. His lover, Snape, helps him. Senses return to Sirius one at a time, very slowly. He's impatient and proud, and when things don’t turn out as he wants them to be, he’s furious, but disability limits even his ways to express anger...

“But at the first sign of Harry's hands leaving his, Sirius clutched and clawed, his tendons standing out from his over-thin arms, and his mouth opened too wide for the low moan that followed.
"Shh, I'm here. It's all right." Harry stroked his godfather's hands, and glanced at the door as if to call back Severus, whom he'd sent to shower and check that their house was still standing. "I've got you. I won't let go. Not this time."
Sirius did not react to his words, but when Harry squeezed, Sirius squeezed back.”

The story is amazing. Don’t say I think so because I’m a fan of Nimori. Well, I am, but exactly because she can write such things. The short scenes here create a perfect rhythm; there’s nothing superfluous there, all details work. It’s neither angsty nor fluffy. The language is neither too simple nor too florid or too expressive. Everything is as it should be, as for me.

It's a sad story, soaked with apprehension -- Harry's leaving his lover to go perform yet another duty, always the sacrificial lamb of the Wizarding world.

Some might enjoy forced marriage fics where Harry is married to Voldemort because they hit certain kinks of theirs. I don't. I usually find them far beyond the limits of what I consider credible. But in Resolution's Ease Nimori creates such a version of reality that I can't help agreeing and thinking that this scenario is possible and even probable. Once again the point is proved: the question is not *what* it's about but *how* it's written. Here it's done wonderfully! The atmosphere is quiet but gloomy and tense, the narration is succinct and precise. Very good reading.

But if you really, really want to be spoiled before reading, click on the warning link above. This fic offers one of the most plausible explanations for the plot I've ever seen, and believe me, I've read a lot of fics that use it. You probably have, too. It has fabulous magic and a plenty of those details that make a good story. Snape is a perfect nasty bastard, sometimes a funny bastard, too. Their battles of epic proportions are so perfectly f*cked-up! Wonderful, deliciously pervy. It's a story you read and only can say, "Whoa!" I loved it!

This is a seriously weird fic (or one could say, another weird fic from Rantipole). Somebody on my f-list called it a combination of Pinoccio and Pygmalion, which sort of explains the plot (if it could be called plot). A wooden Harry is awakened by a knife carving him, scents in the room and hands on him. There's something Hoffmann-esque in the air (or other Romantic-esque), sinister but enchanting. This fic is the definition of bizarre. I liked it a lot.

As for me, this is the best story in HP fandom, period.

It’s odd, but the oddity has almost unidentifiable nature. It isn’t in the plot, which is rather banal - a potions accident, thanks to which two weeks before their graduation and after the victory in the war against Voldemort, Harry is turned into a frog and has to spend the summer in a water-bowl in Snape’s rooms.

It’s not in Harry’s or Snape’s characterization – Harry’s post-war withdrawal is not unusual for HP fiction; Snape? also within the ‘normal’ characterization rank.

It's in *how*. Resonant proves that one can do anything, can write using as trivial things as he/she wishes and nevertheless create a great story.

The pacing is slow and the changes are subtle, the atmosphere is clear and transparent like a cool but sunny summer day. The humour is gentle. And the story is absolutely perfect, flawless. And absolutely unforgettable.

Harry asks to be transfered to a dead-end job: a warden in Amelia Bones Memorial Maximum Security Detention Facility for Dangerous Magical Persons. Where, incidentally, one Severus Snape is undergoing his "improvement."

I loved the magic here! All this Gulliver background is simply fabulous, wow. But the fic is chilly, scary at times. It's dark. Harry is really f*cked up; you can see what absolute power means and what it does to a person, even in such a closed world as Amelia Bones Detention Facility. The scene with Snape's introduction to Atilla made me shudder, as did several others. But there's enough in this story to balance the darkness, so when I finished it, I could only say, "Wow! What a ride!"

After his capture, Severus Snape is one of those Bad Guys who are put away -- sent to the New Facility, 'a wonderful model of the future.' The story is written in the best traditions of dystopia, with sinister details that slowly creep in on you and lurk at the edges of description. This is a chilling, creepy story where a human has to face dehumanisation and fight it, but fight he does. So from a certain point the story is not as bleak as at the beginning; we are given hope. Wonderful story!

Author’s summary: A tragedy at the end of Harry's seventh year makes him redefine his perception of reality.
Length: novella

Reviewer: [info]painless_j

This is one of the most complex HP stories I’ve read. Rushlight plays with two planes of existence, both shown in Harry’s perspective. He lives in two realities and doesn't know which one is real. One of them is slightly too sweet: after the war that the good guys won and after spending some time at St Mungo’s, Harry lives with his lover Remus Lupin in a small cosy cottage. It’s the reality that shows the so-called ‘happily ever after’. However there's a "but" there: Harry suffers from memory loss; he remembers nothing of his [supposedly] happy life. But in his dreams and later even while being awake, he lives in another reality where Voldemort won and where Harry is a sex-slave of his loyal Death Eaters. He’s given to Lucius, then to Draco, then to Snape. And this plane is also slightly exaggerated -- in its badness.
Rushlight plays with the reader expertly. The happy reality structurally is shown as the main one, but Harry from whose POV the story is told believes in the bad reality more. The reader is left clueless as for which one is ‘really real’. In this respect the fic resembles Akutagava’s "In the thicket" where the reader is shown 5 or 6 different but equally credible versions of the same event. Fabulous story!

"This all seems like a dream," he said.
"What does?" Remus looked at him curiously.
"This." Harry gestured vaguely, wishing he could explain himself better. "You. Me. All of it. It's like... like it's too good to be true."

The fic has the most amazing combination of points of view. I had to read it several times to enjoy it properly and give it justice.

This story is a perfect illustration of the fact that narrator and POV aren’t the same thing. Besides, here it’s the 2nd person. Besides, it’s mostly a monologue-type narration. Aren’t you intrigued yet?

But if it were only for the writing techniques, I wouldn’t waste time urging you to read it. Here you can see an example of how such a complicated device makes a really good story. It creates a unique mood and atmosphere and makes the scene it describes nearly palpable.

For three years Harry has been in St Mungo’s, completely paralysed and unable to speak. Snape is Legilimens, so he pays Harry regular visits to communicate with him. Every time Harry asks the same thing and every time Snape refuses. We can see only one side of the conversation, but it’s enough to show despair, irritation, and sparse tenderness, however uncomely it can seem for one Severus Snape. He is exemplary Snape-ish in this fic. Very moving story.

“The images paused. (Snape found himself listening to Granger droning on about the Killing Curse, and had a sudden urge to use it on himself.) When they fell away, they left only a grey fog and a chill that Snape felt even on his skin. He pursed his mouth.
"For Merlin's sake, boy," he whispered. "You can do it. You're too stubborn not to. Do you think I'd still bother to come here every day if I didn't think you were capable?"

A Nick in Time is an absolutely wonderful fic on the whole and, in my opinion, the best of those that explore the de-aging plot. There's a sort of spell accident (but not quite) that turns Hogwarts professors Snape and Potter to their seven-year-old selves. Predictably, they happen to have very different characters and attitudes that are bound to cause conflicts (Snape's in particular) and create all kinds of interesting situations. I love how Tira Nog reflects certain features of the adult Harry and Severus in their childhood selves, with enough differences not to make them seem 'adults in children's bodies' as it often happens with this type of plot.

The story is so kind and full of real, true humanity that it can't leave you unmoved. You'll see what Severus needs to thaw and what would make Harry not shy away from relationships. You'll meet adult Hermione and Ron and learn about Hogwarts life 'behind the scenes' and about elementary education in the Wizarding world. You'll see Snape chase butterflies with a mesh butterfly net, and believe me, it looks good! And what is most important, you'll get charged with love to get you going for months. Lovely, kind and clever story, with a warm, sexy sequel full of wonderful magic!

This is a rec of contraries. The fic contains many a thing that I don't like: vampire!Snape, Snape that is 6'5", euphemisms for the intercourse and male organs, multiple repetitions. It's verbose; the author explains and explains some more. But! I enjoyed it very much! Because it also has many other things, those that made me not pay attention to the things I usually wouldn't like at all. It must be difficult to write a good, thorough vampire fic, judging by the number of barely tolerable ones, but Tira Nog does it wonderfully. I know I should say something to counterbalance what I started this rec with (because I did stay up all night reading it, couldn't make myself go to bed!), but I don't want to spoil it. I'll just say that Tira Nog *is* incredible with original magic and romance, which she demonstrates in this story. Interesting, moving, engaging!
