Title: All the Substance of His House
Author: [info]rinsbane
Rating: NC 17
Warnings: not a one

Summary: Harry tries to return to Godric's Hollow, but finds that Snape has beaten him there.

Rinsbane is a very gifted writer, and in this story she pulls off something that is particularly tricksy, which evoked my heartfelt admiration: although this story is told entirely from Harry's point of view, the Snape characterization just knocked me back. The feeling of how his mind worked, his presence, was so very clear and powerful. Even though it's not his POV. That's hard to do: make the non-POV character feel every bit as three-dimensional and vivid as the one whose POV the story is told in. But Rinsbane succeeds brilliantly here.

Plus, it's a great plot and sexy and intensely readable and all. Harry returns after ten years to Godric's Hollow to try and rebuild his old home, and finds that Snape is a squatter. He proves unexpectedly difficult to evict, and things develop from there to a deeply satisfying conclusion. This story uses magic so cleverly, conveying how it registers on the senses in a poetic and sensual fashion.

Rinsbane's depiction of how Snape's mind works is so intelligently drawn, so compelling that it really took my breath away. Yes yes yes, this is Snape: devious, clever, and protecting his own interests with tenacious stubborness. Except when he doesn't, and blows everything up in his own face. She makes me fall in love with this character all over again, in a slightly different register. Like hearing a melody you love replayed in a minor key, two notes up the scale.

This is absolutely first-rate fanfiction. You have to be grateful, for a gift like this.
