    Charitable Schadenfreude
So, many of you have probably heard of this or saw last year's, but I thought I'd share it all the same.

Desert Bus for Hope is a charity event for Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity. It goes like this: They play the most monotonous video game ever, the legendary Desert Bus for a certain number of hours, with the number of hours based on the donations they get. The donations continue while they play, adding more time. Each hour costs more. They have live streams of the bus, the drivers, and a chat where you can talk to them. Every thousand dollars there's a bit of macrospam on the site in celebration.

As of when I'm posting this, they've been playing for almost 22 hours, out of 101 currently paid for with over $13,000 in donations, and have one point, working on 2. Last year they got $22,800 and six points, the world record. They're looking to break both.

It's good fun for us, torturous for them, and hey, if you're going to contribute to the suffering of others, might as well do it charitably.

ETA: Well, they broke the important record. They just broke $25,000 and counting, committed to 110 hours, of which they've played about 64. They haven't gotten more than 6 points though. They keep crashing.

ETA2: So Gabe and Tycho decided to match the next $10,000 that came in after about $25,500. Current count since the announcement? $5000 has already been donated, bringing them up to 30K and something like 113 hours. There will be at least $5000 coming from PA, probably more as more donations come in. The boys almost cried when Tycho called and told them about it.

Does anyone here watch The IT Crowd?
It's a very, very funny show that's on British TV and is currently in its third season. The second episode aired tonight and I laughed so hard, I nearly broke something.

Here's the link of the new episode.

This has been an incredibly funny series. That there episode? Pushed it into "legendary" status for me. Apparently a lot of other people feel the same way. Just wondering if any of my favourite wankas share this special love?

A little Thanksgiving-themed wank for those celebrating the holiday! And heck, I guess those who don't can enjoy it too. I'd like to think of myself as a fair gal.

So Furaffinity, a website for furry-themed art, changed its top banner for the holiday. Rather than the usual theme for these sorts of things like some character chasing a turkey/a bunch of people sitting down to a meal/a disappointed dude watching the Lions lose game number 5 million, they decide to instead go a different route.

Namely by having their two mascot characters laying on a couch looking morbidly obese. On the original artist's upload there are both positive and negative comments along with much proclaiming that their fetish is NOT OK.

Within minutes there are many journals on the subject. Some displaying total disgust about the subject manner while others tell everyone to (pun intended) lighten up.

In one journal the head of the site, Dragoneer, mocks the people who are complaining about the banner: "Thousands of angry furries who can not take a joke are lining up!" He also edits the news post announcing the banner change to have what is supposed to be a link to a forum post discussing the subject, but is instead our old friend the Rickroll. There IS an actual discussion thread in the forums however, with the title "New Banner is tastless and disgusting". The poster of this thread, Rilvor, wants to start a petition to have the banner removed.

Rilvor: "I would like to start a petition to have it removed. That banner makes me physically ill every time I see it. I do not appreciate having such content in this fandom, which I make a point to avoid, thrust into my face."

The thread so far contains five pages of arguing over whether the banner is disgusting or not and people reminding others that it's only going to be up for 24 hours.

ETA: Thanksgiving is over, and as expected, the banner is gone. However journals about it continue to appear!

"All this pissing and moaning about the banner. I like the banner. I don't like the banner. Journals and forums and fucking petitions.

You know what? People in DR Congo and Somalia are being attacked by rape gangs and war lords, their families are being murdered. People in North Korea are starving to death on the street. Massive terrorist attack in India. Etc."

    Twilight
I see that there have been many posts about Twilight lately! I'd just like to point out that I created a comm a little while ago, [info]sparklefield, which is not part of the F_W network and is therefore not mandatory, but might keep people from getting fed up from an overload of Twilight-related posts.

It was sweet, and then the beak fell off.
I think the theory that Meg over at Cute Overload occasionally posts questionable content just to fuck with her viewers maybe true. Yesterday, Meg posted this video which tells the touching story of a dog who comes to a farm as a puppy and the duck (a male duck named Sheila) who adopts him. Unfortunately, Sheila eventually dies of old age.

    That's where it gets weird.

Sheila's owners decide to get the duck embalmed and present the stuffed results to the dog, who is very happy to see his friend again. So happy, in fact, that he knocks her fake beak off. The video ends with one of the owners dragging Sheila's corpse so the dog can chase after it.

And of course, all hell breaks loose in the comments. )

You're all horrible people and I'm never coming back here again! )

And then someone reveals that the video was fake, made as commercial for an Argentinian Internet Provider. Their tagline translates to "Internet you talk about."

This commercial is animal cruelty! )

There's more to the thread, including discussions on the merits of giving ducks wheels, people quoting sketches about parrots who are pining for the fjords, and the vegans also weigh in toward the end.

I'll leave the parting shot to Sara here:

If dragging my preserved body around the yard made my friend that happy, I'd be fine with it.

ETA: Link to commercial fixed, sorry.

ETA 2: The Duck Drags Back: We have more angry flounces!

Apparently these people missed the comments about how the whole thing was staged and that the whole McKenzie / Sheila friendship was made up. )

New community announcement - for players of girl pups/characters in RPGs - <lj comm="girlpup_central
So I've been thinking for a while about playing girl pups in RPGs and the issues that they can have - good and bad issues. I just really think playing girl pups is different to playing boy pups and not only in the ways one would think. And because I know a lot of other people have thought about this, I've certainly talked to enough people about it, I thought I'd create a community. This is for discussion of any aspect of playing girl pups, whether in games on JF or somewhere else, it's open to everything, RPS, FPS and anything in between, and anyone is welcome to join.

It's for people who play girl pups, are potentially interested in playing girl pups, or people who would like to play with girl pups in any kind of story, femslash, het, or non sexual friendship - even family related storylines are under the umbrella of the comm. It's pretty much anything goes as long as it can be tied back to playing with girl pups. There is also potential to find playing partners interested in or already playing girl pups.

So come join us if you have any interest in any aspect of playing girl pups in RPGs. I'll approve memberships asap.

    Han Solo was a furry?!?!
Han Solo originally had a Wookiee wife.

Screenwriter Lenny Ripps (Star Wars Holiday Special):

What was interesting to me was that Lucas started talking about Star Wars as if it was a real world. He said things like "Well, you know Han Solo is married to a Wookiee. but we can't say that." Now that was 20 years ago [in 1998], so my memory may be wrong.

According to starwars.com's Ross Plesset, however, his memory is surprisingly good:
As outrageous as Ripps's recollection sounds, there is evidence supporting it. Pat Proft corroborates it and an early draft of the Star Wars script (January 28, 1975) has Han Solo living with a furry female creature who he kisses. Proft also remembers learning that Han was raised by Wookiees, which is verified on pages 46 & 131 of Laurent Bouzereau's Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays.

I have a friend who is quite new to fandom and like me, is a total masochist. This is where you guys come in. I need some badfic. Horrible, yet hilarious Mary-Sues, inaccurate and terrifying sex scenes or just plain crazy pairings. EVERYTHING IS WELCOME.

Especially the Care Bear fic where one of them contracts HIV and another bear says, "Jesus-Bear is punishing us." I will give my first born to whoever finds that.

LJ links preferably, since we're both intending to save every link to our memories to pull out on a rainy day, but if there's none, then we'll make do.

Twilight gets its greasy little claws everywhere, doesn't it?
I was listening to NPR on the way home from work today, and "Marketplace" of all things had a story about Twilight.

Specifically about how Twilight is, shockingly enough, causing a huge boom in the teen markets.

Nothing really new here, but I found it really funny to listen to the Marketplace reporters talk about Twilight like it's actually something important and novel.

    S2 Layout Issues
Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme.

You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL:
    http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/common/base-weblog.css

Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box.

And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. Thanks, Robin
