07:33 am - Total Recut Contest Results - What is Remix Culture? This summer I was privileged to be part of a team of judges for the Total Recut "What is Remix Culture" contest, and the winners were announced this week. The judging panel included Lawrence Lessig, Henry Jenkins, Mark Hosler, Pat Aufderheide, Matt Mason, JD Lasica, Kembrew McLeod and me. More info below (from Total Recut):
Those who submitted videos faced the first grueling test of a public vote, where viewers rated each piece on a scale of 1 to 10, to determine who would go forward into the final. At the end of July, the public vote was in and 10 diverse remixes, spanning six countries and three continents, were chosen to be judged by an esteemed panel of international judges, including Lawrence Lessig, Henry Jenkins, Mark Hosler, Pat Aufderheide, Matt Mason, JD Lasica, Kembrew McLeod and Luminosity. The contestants were judged out of 10 in each of three categories – creativity, communication and overall impact. In September 2008, all of the judges’ votes were in, and the winners were announced on TotalRecut.com. The winners are:
First Place: DJ Le Clown, France - ‘Xmas in New York City’ Second Place: Jata Haan, the Netherlands – ‘Composition’ Third Place: Ricardo Carrion, Switzerland – ‘Remix Culture II’
The winners in first, second and third place will receive a laptop computer, a digital camcorder and a digital media player, respectively, courtesy of TotalRecut.com. Avid Pinnacle have sponsored software prizes for our runners up in fourth, fifth and sixth place, who will each receive a copy of the video editing package, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate v12. The remaining finalists will each receive Total Recut merchandise and a copy of one of our judges’ books. All of the competition entrants will receive a free copy of Videomaker magazine, compliments of Videomaker.com.
Total Recut is an award winning online social networking community for fans and creators of video remixes, recuts, and mash-ups that facilitates online collaboration between video artists. TotalRecut.com was launched by Owen Gallagher in 2007 to help promote a balance between protecting the rights of copyright owners and enabling artists to express themselves freely using the relatively new medium of online digital video.
I encourage y'all to go take a look. On a personal note, I learned quite a bit as a judge in this contest, not the least of which were the far-reaching interpretations of what a remix really is. I tend to be quite provincial and picky in my definitions of things, and this contest reminded me that, while I don't know much about art but like what I know, I also don't know much. :)
Also, leave these people some feedback! Not all remix vidding is fannish, and this contest was an entertaining reminder of that fact. Current Mood: Goofy

11:33 am - sigh You know, if I could figure out how to make Semagic cross-post from LJ to here? I'd do it. If someone would walk me through it, I'd be your friend forever!
Also? are there mood themes here that are grabbable? I'd be over here more often if I could figure these things out. Not that it matters, but still. Current Mood: Petulant

Using video footage from any source, including Public Domain and Creative Commons licensed work, we want you to produce a creative, educational and entertaining video remix that communicates a clear message to a wide audience. The video is to be no shorter than 30 seconds and no longer than 3 minutes in duration.
This contest is being run to promote awareness of remix culture in an educational capacity by encouraging the fair use of a wide variety of content and also to create a new pool of work that explains what remix culture is to the general public. 01:07 pm - From the sublime to the ridiculous! New Vid - Vogue Happy Birthday Vividcon! No better way to celebrate than to flood fandom with vids. Thank you to my tireless beta elynross and my Mad Fold-in Friends for their input and encouragement.

04:26 pm - New Vid - Women's Work - Supernatural This is sisabet's and my premiere vid at Vividcon. She and I would love to talk about it, and we probably will, but she's out gallivanting in Chicago at the moment and will join the conversation at her leisure. After all, if I were still up there having extendo-con with everyone, I don't think I'd be uploading vids either. But I'm home and had a fantastic time as usual, so... :)
Anyway!
Women's Work by Luminosity and sisabet
here and here.
It's also at imeem. :)
I love sisabet's brains. Collaborating on this vid was creatively exciting, and I'm glad she asked me.

09:57 am - I knew there'd come a day when this icon would be soooo appropriate! I'm here. I'm not queer. I don't fuck my siblings. However, I think about a lot of shit that, if things keep on moving the way they look to be moving, I might have to take the blue pill.
I also don't raise the dead, go to Wizard School, fly, or have a crush on Batman or Wonder Woman. I believe that Mary Jane has either divorce suit or medical lawsuit on her hands if she ever leaves Spiderman, considering that he obviously pulled her into a bad case of scoliosis, what with his childlike insistence that she wash his Spidey undies by hand, in a washtub.
While I'm not thinking about vidding or Sam and Dean doing each other, I'm thinking about vidding and Sam and Dean doing *me*. DON'T JUDGE ME!
I obviously need a mood theme. Anyone?
And in conclusion, Dean. Current Mood: Holier-than-thou
