I am wondering how exactly one can be a writer without having read a lot of books themselves.
Often time when I'm lurking around on fanfiction writing forums or mailing lists, I have heard that people say they "never read", but they want to be an inspiring writer. It really puzzles me. How can you learn to be a better writer if you don't read others have written before? Being able to write is a talent, but even talented people need practice.
It's like playing a musical instructment - you might be a genius and can play the piano without anyone teaching you. But you will never grow if you don't observe how others play, and develop your own style.
So if you want to be a writer, then read! Read anything you can find, and it doesn't matter what it is. You can read a menu, a user guide, or even a porn magazine! You will definitely learn something from it. |
