The Occupy movement: Why do numbers fall short for the '99 percent'?

Finally, someone who kind of put into perspective for me what the whole Occupy movement was supposed to do, with an added bonus of showing why the movement is failing so miserably. Still don't get the whole Occupy movement, as I don't understand why people think protesting over financial inequality is going to do anything -- financial inequality happens because of various factors, not just randomly. Protest the governmental actions that cause certain people to get richer while others get poorer if you think it'll work, but protesting that you're part of the vast majority who isn't filthy rich? Um... okay?

I need to rant a little bit... I saw this on my RSS and about had a complete conniption fit at this...

Okay people, I used to dislike Obama, but now after the DNC I like him. And now I can honestly say that John McCain doesn't bother me so much as Sarah Palin does. She just really, really weirds me out.

But when I say so, I get accused of being a misogynist who doesn't want a woman in office. Excuse me? It's not that I don't want A WOMAN in office, I just don't want THAT WOMAN in office. I LOVE Hillary Clinton -- she is still the best person for the Presidential job, IMHO, but I'm at peace now, and I'm convinced that Obama won't be a total failure and that he can start to heal the wounds that Bush inflicted.

So, why do I hate Palin? Truthfully? I don't know. I just don't like her.

So... anyone who's cruising by, please, gimme some concrete reasons why I should dislike her. Reasons I can use in a debate. Please?

Barbaro, the winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, who broke a leg in the Preakness Stakes two weeks later, was euthanized (humanely destroyed, for those who don't know the term) Monday morning. I felt that I ought to rouse out of my long hibernation from JF and post here, because this is a significant thing, and I'm really saddened. If you don't like racehorses or people mourning them, fuck off and get out of my journal. It's not like I'm posting this at a community. No one that I know of has me F-listed, either, so it's not like I'm forcing this on anyone. If you have me F-listed, well, good for you, but I'm not trying to preach at you. I'm venting my anger and tears over how goddamn unfair reality can be.

Barbaro's injury was incurred on May 20, 2006. He underwent emergency surgery and seemed to be on the mend until about six weeks later, when a very dangerous disease that is very common in horses with injuries, a disease called "laminitis" (to give you an idea of what the disease is, some people call it "hoof-rot" -- though it's more than just a hoof infection. MUCH more) struck. Again, he was operated on, and has seemed to thrive for many months. Late in December, he suffered another setback, and the setbacks just kept piling up throughout January.

Monday, he was finally put down, because the horse's comfort level has been compromised so long, the doctors felt there was nothing else for it. And really, there wasn't. Horses cannot survive without all four legs, unlike dogs or cats.

I know, I know, I shouldn't be worked up or upset over the death of a horse, a horse I've never met and haven't been a huge fan of. But you know what? The racing world has lost a lot of really great animals recently, to stupid freakish accidents or to diseases that can't be cured. And frankly, we were all so hoping that he'd pull through and be the miracle we really wanted to have. After the deaths of two reigning champions last year (Champion Sprinter, Lost in the Fog, who died of cancer, and Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male, Saint Liam, who died of a freakishly broken leg) we were hoping for a ray of hope. Now that's been snuffed out.

I know, I know, it's not like it was anyone I knew. It's not like some of the stuff you guys go through and deal with. But, I just need to vent a little. Horse deaths don't usually bother me, because that's the way of the sport. Racehorses get fatally injured all the time (almost every day). Famous horses die every year, either of freakish accident injuries or illness. But somehow, we just prayed and hoped Barbaro would make it through. He seemed to be getting so much better... and then he took a turn for the worst.

His death seems to just have let all the air out of everyone's sails. I do think the racing fandom is doing a collective group hug, but it's still a staggering blow. It's not that we didn't expect this at all, pretty much everyone knew towards the end that he was running out of time, but we just kept hoping that he'd beat the odds. As one friend of mine put it, he put all his faith and trust into the humans who worked at the New Bolton Center, and in the end that faith and trust wasn't (weren't? grammar is totally sucking today) rewarded. He was a model patient, calmly adapting to all procedures like an old pro, which is unusual for a horse of his breeding. And in the end, he still had to be put down.

I really, really hate this sport sometimes. It absolutely destroys dreams. After losing Star Over the Bay two years ago, and Lost in the Fog last year (plus Silent Gold is most likely dead, I haven't gotten a work from him in nearly a year, and no indication of retirement), this is pretty close to my last straw.

And yet, like the cliched moth to a flame, I keep floating back.

Rest in peace, Barbaro. You're free to run now. Just don't get lost. I'm sure Saint Liam will be there waiting to greet you. And watch out for Lost in the Fog's kick -- he's got one hell of a backside and I wouldn't want to be kicked by it! Also, watch out for Danzig's temper. I hear he's got a real possessive, jealous streak.

As you can see, HP absolutely owns the top spots in the later months. Pretty much everything from 2004 and earlier was about fandom in general, but starting in 2005, the wank got pretty spectacular in the HP section. I guess Halfblood Prince was true wank material. ([HP] means the aforemention wank was catalogued in the MsScribe saga.)

Yay! New identity, starting over fresh! :D
