11:04 pm - You only wish you were this awesome.
So I'm trying to clear out my kitchen, and figured I'd make some cookies since I have lots of flour and sugar. But what I don't have at the moment is eggs .. and I have one recipe for cookies that doesn't need eggs: my aunt's candy-cane cookies. But it's not Christmas, so instead:

OH YEAH, I MADE STARFLEET-COLORED COOKIES.

(Or I made ... primary-colored cookies. Um. Quiet. I own my nerdiness.)

I put in vanilla instead of almond extract, and they are YUMMY. The picture is half-a-recipe except for the broken ones, because I am basically out of butter, too. .. I need to go shopping if I plan to use up any more of my flour.

One quick ST:AOS fic rec: my second choice (my best bet) by [info] - personalraphaela667: Uhura/McCoy, Spock/Kirk, angst, R. (I'm linking to the intermediary page, because you need to see the link text and then have this song running through your head while you read the story.) It's .. melancholy and plausible, about finding a life that works, and it touched me in just the right way tonight. ♥.

In other news, I really need to update my Real Life journal. Maybe tomorrow.

- Every time I see "ST: XI" I pronounce it "Star Trek Ksi" in my head. It's weird. Fandom, can we officially make it either ST:AOS or ST: Sexyverse instead please?

I would like to be talked out of seeing him like this. I would really like to love this Bones. Fandom, can you bring me around?

(ETA: Mentioned in comments, but is worth bumping up to the main post that for fic with a new!Bones that I can see old!Bones in, I approve of everything [info] - personaldamalur has written. You should go read and love!)

01:20 am - It seems to be Icon Night around here.
Have a couple icons with quotes from The Bugle.

These were both uttered by THE GREAT AND EXALTED MISTER ANDY ZALTZMAN.

And this concludes my icon-making for 2009.

Also, I am relatively happy with my DW layout, for the moment (though I would really like it to display my journal subtitle). And I have an awesome new Women of Star Trek mood theme! (I sort of wanted a general TOS one, but I couldn't find one, and on reflection? This one is pretty kick ass. Look at the pretty!)

ETA: [info] - communitystarry_sea is discussing The Kobayashi Maru this week! Come join! I'll have something to comment sometime tomorrow probably. :D

I, um.

Just won free burritos for a year from California Tortilla.

OMG.

There is a catch, of course: There are no California Tortillas in Iceland. And there are no California Tortillas in Massachusetts. (There are none north of PA, in fact.) And you have to use one a week, or you lose it (ie, you can't save them up to use all at once, and you can't treat people).

12:16 am - Proof that I was not meant to be an engineer:
This is just about the worst possible design for a space vehicle. Too many sharp angles. WAY too much surface area. It would be way more trouble than it's worth to make that thing not come apart at the seams. You'd want something more like just the engineering hull.

But if I were designing one, I'd make it look just like that, because she is beautiful. ♥!!

Completely unrelated: I have a google alert set on my name. One just came through from Google Books. (C) 1897. "There was much pleasant talk always of a pretty serious kind, except when we met our cousin Katy ------, who was sparkling all over with fun, and she and my father made the house ring with their laughter. She was a fine specimen of New England old maidenhood, merry and gay, and we counted greatly on her rare visits to us, when she acted like wine on my father bringing out all his wit and jollity. Merriment was an unusual gift in women of those days, who were generally overworked and anxious. She had only herself to care for, and she found time to eat, drink, and be merry with her friends."

How awesome is that? Can I be her when I grow up?

10:14 pm - FIC: DW/ST: My Own Beginning; or, The Doctor Gets A(nother) Reboot
[info]melannen says it's good and I should post it.

Title: My Own Beginning; or, The Doctor Gets A(nother) Reboot
Author: [info]stellar_dust
Fandom: Doctor Who/Star Trek
Rating: PG
Words: ~5000
Characters: Ten, Eight, the Guardian of Forever, and lots of surprise guest stars from both series.
Summary: The Tenth Doctor finds out about the Guardian of Forever. Surely this will not end well.
Warnings: SPOILERS for the new Star Trek movie. All of Doctor Who is also fair game.
Notes: I blame this on [info]melannen, who told me to 1) watch lots of Star Trek and 2) write the story where the thing happens.

Disclaimer: Not mine, not for profit, move along.

01:08 am - The tea is getting cold.
Two vaguely-spoilery-for-S4 things about Doctor Who. )

Anyway, new friends on DW: I am very excited to get to know all of you! But I am a little busy right now (I mean really, Dreamwidth, you couldn't have launched sometime when my entire life isn't in the process of changing? COME ON NOW), so I would like to apologize for if (and when!) I fail at leaving comments. I'm reading, though, definitely. ♥ you all anyway.

It is raining. I've had the windows open ever since those really hot days a week or so ago, even though it's cooled off quite a lot. I love hearing the rain.

I'm not ready for it to be Monday already, and I'm not ready to go clean up the kitteh barfs that were recently deposited in my hallway. ALAS.

However: I still have lots and lots and LOTS of Dreamwidth invite codes! Comment and I will get you them!

Also: Star Trek movie THIS WEEKEND. Am I going to see it, or will I have Too Much Else To Do? Stay tuned!

03:02 pm - A Poem!
I'd like to share a poem for International Poetry Month! This is from a poster I picked up from the Public Poetry Project at the National Book Festival in 2005. Most of the poems I've picked up from them don't speak to me, much, but this one's been up on my cubicle wall for as long as I've had a cubicle:

The Coffee Line
by Judith Vollmer

The cart was a house we approached at dawn,
the man tended the chrome pots bent over
in his canvas apron, the steam a circuit above the boiling
water and the smell could knock you out at 6 in the morning:
our paper bags softened in the mist, and our lunches sealed
in waxed paper held meats & fruit--
second sweetness of the day--but this would be the first, the dark
poured into our thermoses, the dark warmed our faces
in the first-light, the smell, holy
smell of the whole oiled & turning world
smoked in our nostrils down onto our tongues,
eyes in our heads watered, ears opened
to the sound of pouring from the chrome spout,
the falling dark waterfall into the cup, 1 cup just
now before work, sipping in the dark, 2 sugars, 3,
help yourself to a fourth, it's payday,
the milk warmed if possible      is that possible, the man
bends toward us hands up the cup and keeps pouring
elixir & frugality, cost & profit. Every morning
the red ring of the the single burner on the white
stove in the cart can be seen from far away in the black
wet streets we walk, minds dipped in sky-tar
buffed to something ebony & bony & vase-like;
we walk toward the wedding ring of night & morning fused,
Saturn, ring of the brain's tiny volcanoes awakening.

--after John Sloan, American painter, 1871-1951

08:02 pm - Posting Plan
Ok, well, if I'm going to do this, I need to Just Do This, before things get even more muddled than they are.

From here on out, I'm going to have two journals:

+ stellar_dust, where I will post fannish things - fic, mixes, meta, squee, etc - publicly. Things that cannot be posted publicly anywhere will be access-locked here. For the moment, this situation will be exactly mirrored on LJ, IJ, and JF. At some point I'll stop posting to JF (probably once I get a lot of icons uploaded to the DW). After layouts and embedding start totally working on DW, I'll embed it on stellar-dust.katycat.net, and stop posting to IJ. At the same time, my LJ will go entirely locked, and I will probably turn comments off and direct them all to DW (DW should have a crossposting interface by then that makes this easy). If you're concerned about how you'll handle that, this post should help. (I would, of course, prefer all of you get a DW reading list, and read me there.)

+ katycat, where I'll post everything that's not fannish and not locked - academic things, updates from Iceland, picspams of my cats. Basically, this is the journal that I can point friends and family to to keep up with my exploits, without subjecting them to RPS and OMG HOW HOT WAS JON LAST NIGHT YOU GUYS and that sort of thing! This is currently crossposted to katycat.insanejournal.com, because it's embedded in katycat.net - once again, when embedding and styles work on DW, I'll stop crossposting. I have no plans right now to crosspost this content to LJ. If you want to read it, and you don't want to come to DW, I'd like for some kind soul with a paid LJ to create a feed, and you'll click through to the DW to read the post and/or comment.

(I'm not sure yet how - or even if - I'll use katycat's reading list. That's something I still need to work out. I'll also be eagerly awaiting the multiple-account controls that DW should be implementing eventually.)

There might be the occasional public post that ends up both places. We'll see. The sum of both sites should look pretty much the way my LJ does now - with maybe, hopefully, a slightly more professional tone to the entries that go up at katycat@DW.

So:
- subscribe to stellar-dust@DW if you want fandom and fic and squee (or make a feed, but comment on DW, please)
- subscribe to katycat@DW if you want real life things and travelogues and photos and cats and archaeology (or the feed, but comment on DW, please)
- request access to stellar-dust@DW if you want ALL the gory details

If you don't want all the gory details, I'll take you off my access list - no hard feelings, just ask.

(No, I'm not trying to completely disassociate my identities. If that was my goal, stellar-dust's website wouldn't be at katycat.net! I just want to achieve *some* separation, to be able to invite casual friends to my website without having to explain what slash is, but keeping the fic open for those that want it. I think this is the easiest way to accomplish that, and I've been wanting to try it for quite a while.)

It'll probably take me a little while to figure out exactly how this will work, which post goes where, and settle into a routine. I hope to have it settled by the time I leave for Iceland at the very latest! Knowing where people are subscribed will help with that, I think. If you have questions, or comments, or can think of a better way to achieve what I'm aiming for, please, tell me!

(Yeah, I used an invite code on myself. I'm evil. I know. I'm sorry. I couldn't help it. I'll grovel. Forgive me?)

07:05 pm - Bingley Report
We're back from the vet, for the second time in as many weeks. He thinks they both have the rhinotracheitis virus (aka feline herpes), and that it should go away by itself within the next couple of weeks. This is, basically, the same thing I'd ascertained from my Internet Learnings. There are some treatments, but unless I notice any change in behavior, or worse discharges, or a sore on her eye, he doesn't think I need to give her anything. (Well, maybe children's Benadryl, but it's made to taste good to kids ...)

I do hope it goes away that quickly. My poor kitty. I once knew a cat who died of an upper respiratory infection, so I'm extra paranoid about it - vet visits are expensive, but I can't just ignore a bad case of sniffles, even if I know it's probably something minor. :/ Poor, poor stuffed-up Bings. (Darcy is much, much better.)

Also, today we saw the vet who looks exactly like the Fourth Doctor, so that was fun. (For me.) And, as usual, Bingley drew massive amounts of attention to herself, and everyone said she was adorable.

09:00 pm - Another cat update ..
Darcy: is doing much better. Still a little sniffly, but *much* better, and I've only had to toss out one of her pills so far because she was too much of a bum to swallow it before it got all gross and dissolve-y.

Bingley: has definitely caught Darcy's infection. She's been sniffly and very sneezy, and she has really watery eyes - she's been crying a lot more than Darcy was. She's sort of okay with nosedrops, sometimes, so I've given her some of those. This evening I tried to give her one of Darcy's antihistamines (after researching it and determining it would probably be fine to do so), but she's even better than Darcy is at not swallowing pills, so that was another one wasted (and another band-aid on my hand ...). My research also showed that sinus infections tend to go away on their own after a couple of weeks, so I don't think I'll take the Bings to the vet unless it gets much worse (especially since the vet would probably give her more pills, and that would be sort of a losing proposition, it seems).

They're both absolutely fine aside from stuffy-head symptoms - eating and sleeping and playing and pooping and glomming me just as usual, and not vomiting or sneezing blood or anything. I think they will be okay. Still, happy thoughts for my babies would be appreciated!

11:44 pm - hi!
1) Darcy seems to be doing much better. Yay kitty! ... Bingley, however, is sneezy. She's not as bad as Darcy was, though, and hopefully I she will not ever get that bad and I won't have to take her to the vet, too. (I did give her some nose-drops-via-q-tip and she was much better about it than the Darcesterkitty.)

2) stellar-dust.dreamwidth.org!!! YAY!!! If you're there, add me. :D (I should probably use having-a-dw as an excuse to trim down the flist, as I *just* caught up with IJ and JF (not LJ yet) from the weekend. Unfortunately it is starting to become a new, different flist. ... well. work in progress. I'll mess with it more later this week.) This post is x-posted in my standard mode, not to DW yet - I need to poke at it more and add it to my semagic list. Later.

3) How is it 11:30 and i still haven't made egg salad. ... know what? making egg salad and then GOING TO SLEEP are more important to my well-being than trying to remember what I wanted to post, or even watching the DW easter special which is sitting on my computer taunting me. I guess I'm a little exhausted. Someday, I would like to not be exhausted, but that doesn't seem likely any time soon.

4) Oh - I'm caught up on House. And I've educated myself on AmazonFail. I'm reserving judgment on the latter. As for the former, I think they handled it as well as could be expected, I'll be interested to see what goes on the rest of the season, the MSM FAILS for its obnoxious spoilers, Kal Penn is at least 80% pure awesome, and I really, really miss Kutner.

I haven't tried swaddling yet. I guess I could wrap her in a towel. I'm sure she DOES NOT WANT that too, though.
