Unhitch it, undo it, anything, just make it go away
Hey, remember when "There's Something About Mary" came out and we all thought that step just above gross-out humor, was awesome? That watching Ben Stiller get his penis stuck in his zipper or Cameron Diaz using semen as hair gel was really really funny?
Yeah, that was back in 1998.
Unfortunately, the Farrelly Bros are still trying to sell that same brand of humor and I will give them that they found the perfect network to do so. The Bros and Fox seem to be separated at birth. Now, don't get me wrong. I was not expecting some intelligent humor from "Unhitched". I knew what I was expecting and just by the trailers, my expectations were not exactly high. However, I gotta say, it was worse that I was expecting. That was a baaaad experience, to be honest. And really, it's mostly due to the Farrelly Bros. They really have long surpassed their heyday and, in general, TV has surpassed finding comedy concerning monkey sex on that cutting edge of funny. Again, I didn't expect good, but I didn't expect this bad. I guess if forced I could pick out one or two funny-ish lines, but overall it all fell so very flat for me. I didn't like the characters, I didn't find them compelling or interesting or damn, even funny, and as an overall, it was on the unwatchable side.
I really think that the funniest part about it was that years ago, Craig Bierko turned down the role of "Chandler" on Friends and heh, now he seems to be trying to channel Matthew Perry, but has only succeeded in doing it very very poorly.Really, the whole show wants to channel many the popular sitcoms (Friends and Seinfeld, obviously) and add its own brand of humor, but it just did not work at all well together. I could give it the excuse that it was the pilot, but I know myself, I would not go near that show again and I wonder if many will feel the same, so I truly wish it a quick and painless death. I think that in general, Farrelly Bros can be dealt with on a 2 hour basis, because after that, you can walk away from it. However, as a weekly sitcom? There's just nothing strong enough there to hold it.
I've mentioned Bierko and really, all the actors were pretty much phoning it in. I will have to touch on Rashida Jones, as she was one of the reasons I was watching this show in the first place. It's probably well known in my LJ, but I'm not a fan of her as an actress, as I think she lacks comedic timing and well, talent. Basically, I've never felt she had much of a range as an actress in the roles I've already seen her in up until now and unfortunately, her performance here has pretty much confirmed this for me. Hey, remember that grimace/smirk thing she did ALL the time on The Office that basically passed for every emotion and reaction she was supposed to achieve in each scene? Yeah, she just did a lot of that. She almost plays a character similar to Karen attempting to channel Elaine on "Seinfeld", but sans the talent of The Office writers or The Office cast around her.
So, yeah, there's that. I don't think many of you were planning on watching this, but if you were, well, there's your warning :)
