The red deer reached up and nuzzled his stallion's neck. A long, silky black mane tickled his nose. Harry wanted to laugh, giggle madly for the freedom he felt here in this secluded meadow, but unfortunately red deer didn't giggle. Severus blew softly in his magnificent stag’s ear, loving the warmth and companionship he felt growing with each passing of the days. His only regret was that he'd never found a love like this when he was in human form. His whole life he’d been alone and loveless, passion a forbidden fruit, never to be tasted.
Theirs was supposed to be one of those impossible loves, but was it really? They had their time together, frolicking in the meadow and grazing on the sweet grass. They had their time apart, both disappearing for hours at a time, joining together again in the mid afternoon sun, until they could no longer bear to be parted.
They never had to speak, never had to apologize and never had to explain themselves to anyone. Somewhere along the way, they silently decided not to use the words. It seemed somehow natural to never return to their human forms, just run off into the sunset and live happily ever after. It was like a fairy tale come to life, real yet surreal in its total absurdity.
They never spoke of their past lives, or who they once were. They never voiced their love for each other aloud in a clear human voice.
Instead, they lived the dream and galloped merrily off into the sunset.
And they did live very happily ever after.
