It had been over three months since the last order meeting and things on Voldemort’s side had been far too quiet. This was a bad sign. It meant that the old snake was definitely planning something. A few snippets came down the spy network and Dumbledore hastily called a meeting at Grimmauld Place.

Severus hadn’t been back there since the last meeting and he didn’t really want to attend this one. The thought of seeing the wolf again after their last encounter made Severus cringe. He’d done something incredibly stupid last time. He’d let his guard down and given into the desires of the werewolf.

That was his first mistake. His second mistake would cost him dearly for the rest of his life. Severus Snape was a double agent and he didn’t want to risk exposure, but there was no way he could continue to spy in his present condition.

Remus paced the entryway at Grimmauld Place. Severus had stayed away after their one night of passion. He’d attempted to contact the man many times, but all his pleas came back unanswered. Remus’ heart was breaking. He couldn’t stand not being with him. Something happened that night, something powerful and wonderful, but Remus didn’t know what. Whatever it was, it made him long for Severus, pine for him, call out for him in is dreams and think about him to the exclusion of all else. He could barely eat and sleep was elusive at best. Sirius was worried about him, but the more he pushed the surlier Remus became.

Upon his arrival, a very agitated werewolf met Severus in the hallway and dragged him into the library before the meeting ever began.

"How dare you touch me? Take your filthy hands off me wolf! Severus spat out vehemently.

"Please, Severus, I just want to talk to you. You never answered any of my owls. Why, Severus? Remus implored.

"We are not having this conversation. I want nothing more to do with you, Lupin. It is sufficed to say, that our one encounter was a grave mistake. You coerced me into it, took advantage of me in a moment of weakness and used my misery for your own twisted pleasure. Now, get out of my way." Severus snarled as he tried to push past Remus.

Remus’ composure snapped and he shoved Severus back against the wall. His scent was intoxicating as he sniffed at his neck. There was something different about it, but Remus couldn’t tell what the difference was.

"Severus, please, I know you don’t mean that. You still want me as much as you did that first night. I can smell your desire, your need and your… and… my God…" Remus drew back and stared at Severus, finally identifying the unusual scent. Severus was red as a beet and trembling, but not from anger. The dark man was terrified and Remus pulled him into his arms, holding him until the trembling subsided.

"You should have told me, Severus." Remus said with a choked sob. "I love you. You’re my mate. I took you as my mate that night and I don’t ever want to be without you. Damn it, we're going to have a baby, Severus. When were you going to tell me?"

Severus sniffed and raised his head to meet the werewolf’s eyes. "Never, I was never going to tell you. I was going to just disappear and raise this child on my own, away from maniacal dark lords and meddling old fools. My plans haven’t changed. I’m still leaving in the morning."

Remus swallowed hard. "Please, no, don’t do this. I want to be with you and raise our child with you, grow old with you. Don’t you understand?"

Severus sighed. "Yes, I understand, but I also understand the risk. We will be hunted by Voldemort and his minions. Dumbledore and the Order will be looking for us as well. I’ll be safer on my own, without the added dangers of being attached to a werewolf. I will not be able to brew the Wolfsbane for you…"

Remus interrupted, "but if we stay here, Albus will help us. He’ll make sure I have the Wolfsbane and you’ll be safe from Death Eaters. We can be together and raise our child in safety. Please, Severus, you can’t hope to do this all by yourself."

"You are correct, Remus. He can’t do this alone." Albus interjected.

"Blasted, meddling… miserable… old…" Severus sputtered.

"What did you expect, Severus? Did you think I wouldn’t notice your sudden bouts of morning sickness or Remus’ anxious behavior? You will stay here, Severus--with Remus, where you belong. Is that clear?"

Remus nodded his thanks to Albus while Severus continued to scowl at the two men. His life had always been a series of manipulations. Why should this situation be any different?

~~~~~~~
Six months later, Severus watched Remus holding their newborn son in his arms, a look of pure rapture encompassing his face. Sirius Black was running around, fussing over him like a mother hen and Albus beamed just like a proud Grandfather. Severus shook his head, thinking that maybe being manipulated wasn’t so bad after all.
