Subject: S2 Layout Issues
Security: Public

Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme.

You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL:
http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/common/base-weblog.css

Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box.

And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. Thanks, Robin

Hi guys,

The developer is still working on the next big update, which will include getting the subscription management options functional. In the meantime, it would appear that those options not being fully functional is what's causing a whole lot of the comment notification weirdness.  Until the developer gets those functions working, if you're not getting emails of your comments, try un-checking the option to have comments mailed to you in the subscription management area, and then make sure that emailing of comments IS checked in the comment management area.

Subscription management is here: http://www.journalfen.net/manage/subscriptions
Comment management is here: http://www.journalfen.net/manage/comments

As usual, if you have something you'd like to test, or you have something you'd like for us to test, feel free to stop by our [info]guineapig journal.

Thanks, everyone. And happy new year!

That was just a bit of post-upgrade growing pains. The developer helping us (and he kicks ass, by the way) found the problem and fixed it. Our system and our setup is a little unique compared to other installations, and so there were a couple things to adjust for because of that. We hope that's the last of the bigger glitches, but we can promise we'll be on it if something else does happen to come up. In the meantime, we'll be cleaning up the little things as we get comfy with the upgrade.

Thanks, everyone!

With the new upgrade, we were bound to have a glitch or two. The developer helping us is working on the problem so that it doesn't happen again. Should something else come up, we'll take care of that too, until things are worked out and the site is glitch-free.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Hang on, guys, and we'll have the proper account privileges restored soon. I know the userpic allowances are off. We just need to tie up some loose ends on the upgrade, and then we can restore the privileges, and you'll have your userpics and such back.

Thanks!

Sorry for the short notice, but we have to have a quick bit of downtime for maintenance, in about 15 minutes from now. We'll be as fast as possible, I promise.

Thanks, everyone!

I just wanted to let you guys know that we are in the midst of a bit of upgrade construction, and that means there will be some downtime here and there (though we will do our best to keep it minimal). When you see that we'll have a little downtime, that's a sign that we're on our way to much better things around here.

You may want to keep an eye on [info]jf_maintenance  for a while also, as you may see a notice of maintenance downtime posted there, as well.  [info] Between jf_maintenance and system, we'll try to keep you guys updated best we can.

Thanks!

I've fixed the stats page so you can get journalfen stats if you're interested.

http://journalfen.net/stats.bml

I've also fixed syndicating so you might want to go in and update/add/delete syndicated feeds attached to your account.

Hello, everyone. I made some tweaks today to hopefully accommodate more simultaneous users. I just finished around 5:30 pm eastern time today. If anyone has been around both before and after that time period, I'd really like to see your comments about this over at the [info]guineapig journal.

Thank you!

I'm so sorry, guys. That was my fault just a while ago, about a half hour/45 minutes ago. I meant to do a little tweaking and optimizing while we had a semi-slow-down, but the file I was optimizing was a bitch to work with, and thus the unexpected downtime. I promise to keep my hands off of things for a while, except to monitor. And next time, on a big file like that one, I'll download the file first instead of working live on the fly. D'oh!

Thanks for not lynching me. :)

Okay, that's about it, guys. We're done with the maintenance and re-fortification. We'll be watching closely to make sure the load balancing is actually... you know... balancing. So far, so good, though. If we have to go down or into read-only for more modifications, we'll try to get a note up here for as much advance warning as we can provide. But we think this ought to about get it done. Whew!

Okay, we need to tweak a few more things, so expect for us to be read-only periodically (or down, periodically, if we absolutely have to be) for the next few hours.

We'll be closing down for a short while this evening while we perform some load-balancing and database maintenance. We'll need time to perform another full database backup and data transfer and to do a little testing of the new load balancing settings, so we're looking at about two hours. If we can shorten that time, we'll try, but we can't make any promises.

To clarify the time, it will be around 7 pm Eastern time, Thursday, July 19th.

We've had about FOUR times the usual server load over the last day and a half, and so we've been kept pretty busy at least trying to keep up with that load. I have some ideas for compensating. I'll be closing the database later this evening when I try a couple things and get another backup in the process. It won't be for long. And hopefully, when I'm done, everyone will be happier. I'll update here when I have a moment.

Hi everyone,

I know that we've had some sporadic, unpredictable slow-downs and stoppages here and there. With having brand new system modules on the server, it's unfortunately taking some trial and error with the getting the right apache and database settings. The particular settings (and geez, there's like a couple hundred) that we used with the previous system modules aren't as effective on this current setup. We're working on it, though, and once we have the right ones, we'll be 100% back the way we were before we had to do the restore.

Thanks for your patience.

ETA: The settings we tried earlier today (4/11) really sucked, I know. Sorry about that. That combo has been tossed out the JF airlock, we promise.

Subject: So, this is the scoop...
Security: Public

We're back!

Okay, what happened? We got hit by a series of DOS attacks over the period of about a week. We didn't think it was a huge deal, because the processors handled the load pretty damn well. Turned out to be a big deal after all, because they found a vulnerability. One particular apache module that we used for running JournalFen turns out to have a vulnerability. The attackers probably realized it during one of the early attacks, and then deliberately came back to maximize damage.

So, when we got the hardware restored (brand new primary hard drive included) we had to find an alternative to that apache module. ZR did that. So we're all set and more secure now.

Thanks for your patience, everyone!
