Happy LATE Christmas everybody! The past few days have been busy days for me. Thursday, I made deserts with my brother and his girlfriend (henceforth T): fudge, peanut butter blossom cookies, and these little mint candy snowmen: I also made creme fraiche for the potatoes gratin dauphinois which was made on Christmas. They were delicious but so much prep work! Friday we had a simple roast dinner and I spent the day watching Holiday specials and movies: Stephen Colbert, "A Muppet Christmas Carol," "White Christmas," and "It's a Wonderful Life." Brother went over to T's family Christmas Eve dinner, which was a big deal because it was with her Vietnamese side of the family and it was the first time he was invited to a big family get-together in five years. They gave us some Vietnamese egg rolls (they don't really have egg filling, but pork, rice noodles, and carrots and some sort of lentil I think)and some chili sauce earlier that day, so that was lunch for two days. If you have never had them, you should. Bro came back and showed us his friend's house. His father is one of those guys that syncs lights to music. Actual Christmas was mellow. The Lakers lost, but at least the Celtics also lost. I got a NOOK, computer components, cloths, and a herb garden kit. I'm debating going to exchange the NOOK for a NOOK Color or get a Kindle instead. Does anyone have any strong opinions regarding which is better: NOOK or Kindle? Awww, those snowmen are so cute. They look almost like little penguins :D I've only used a Kindle and I'm not a fan of eReaders in general. However, doesn't Amazon have that weird azw file format where you can only read books on the Kindle or something? Sun, Dec. 26th, 2010 11:11 pm (UTC)

It's got Mobi, which you can use Calibre to convert things to. But because Amazon is The Big Evil, a lot of eBooks, even free ones, are made available in Kindle format. (I just loaded up Don's brand sexy new Kindle with tons of shit, including a lot of fanfic.) Mon, Dec. 27th, 2010 01:00 am (UTC)

What's Calibre and does it cost anything? I like the Nook from what I read but I am leaning towards Kindle since I dislike touch screens and it holds more books. Mon, Dec. 27th, 2010 01:38 am (UTC)

Calibre is a free download that asks for donations. It's a ... thingy... that can convert one type of eBook reader document to another, including PDFs. I heard about it from Bree, who knows all things eBook related. Mon, Dec. 27th, 2010 01:45 am (UTC)

I heard the B&N servers crashed for like, 48 hours after everyone opened their new Nooks and tried to use them. Amazon is the evil empire. There is a LOT to be >:( about. Their books are a proprietary format and you have to do illegal things to them to be able to read them on a different device. (Also, DRM. also, you should always download the books & back them up because who knows if the books will disappear at some later date.) However. They're still the easiest to use. I totally just got myself a kindle 3. And I use my kindle because it syncs my books...I read on my phone and on my desktop PC and my macbook too. And my books are all magically there. (And on hubby's kindle and his computer too. So triple win.) Mon, Dec. 27th, 2010 06:17 am (UTC)

Sadly I didn't make most of them. Mine is supposed to be a Nightwing snowman and is in the back, wearing a mask. Sun, Dec. 26th, 2010 11:12 pm (UTC)

They're just sugar, corn syrup, peppermint essence, butter and food coloring. Super fun and easy! |
