Lucian Freud died aged 88

Lucian Freud obituary
Lucian Michael Freud, artist, born 8 December 1922; died 20 July 2011

British realist artist whose later portraits drew comparisons with works by Courbet, Titian and Picasso

It was one of those moments where you don't know how much someone you never met affected your life. Hole punched in my chest right now.

Random real life stuff

I haven't talked much about real life happenings lately:

1. I gots a job! I work as a file clerk in a law firm which specializes in labor law and represents a lot of teachers. :D

2. I got a bit drunk on Oct. 29th and it lead to interesting quotes such as:
"THAT'S A DOG!" *points to said dog*
*sees woman crossing a street in a sari* "I love saris!"
"She has the best Halloween costume." *talking about a woman carrying a baby in one of those baby slings*

3. Glad my state went mostly democratic. Sort of meh about the rest of the country. People focus on the GOP now being republican but it seems that there is still a good number of dems in congress and as [info]puipui pointed out, the progressive ones seem to be in it.

Other than that, my life is as boring as usual. I'm trying to finish my Harry Potter scarf (which I've been working on for years on and off) before it comes out, but its taking a back seat to this class I'm taking (I have the final tomorrow and I should be studying, but I'm not feeling too hot so fuck it).The new series I'm watching are "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Walking Dead." I watched a couple episodes of "No Ordinary Family," but got turned off that the wife's power is super speed so she began to usurp the father as the more domestic parent because now she can "have everything" (she's excited that she can now attend PTA meetings!). I don't mind her having more time for the family, but she was a kick ass scientific researcher so I felt this sort of undermined the character as they seemed to be focusing on this plot point a lot. Sorry, Julie Benz. I still love you. I do want to see "The Cape" when it comes out.

Also, I feel like the only art history and art world nerd on journalfen sometimes. :(

ETA: Now that the arc ended, Bleach is interesting again! I skipped almost the whole thing! Can anyone give me a run down of what I missed which was significant and what chapters I should, at the very least, read?

Medea

Done with Medea sketches. I chose to paint her with her slain children like a Pieta or Madonna on the Rocks image. I feel it does her heroism justice. I'm really pleased how they came out though I'll probably have to do more. She will be dressed as a 1950's housewife and it'll be on the beach. I don't know if I should have storm clouds or clear skies.

Tomorrow I will do some Medusa studies. But for now, sleep!

First painting of the semester

Elasped time: approx. 4 hours
Size: 40"x30"

Just your basic collage painting based off of a drawing, done as a class assignment. Will provide a better image later when I get my hands on my roomie's digi and with better lighting. It's a lot brighter IRL, but there is only so much photoshop is good for with camera phone images.

I also felt really in control of everything I was doing in this peice which is rare for me. I feel like it's exactly the way I want it.

I've been gone because friends have been visiting. Did I miss anything in particular?

I got to spend a lovely day with Robin and Dan at the Bower's Museum. The Terracotta Warriors aren't there, but the Egyptian exhibit on loan from the British Museum was and I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. Mummies are just awesome. They also had a nice exhibit on Ancient China from the permnament collection and a visiting gem stone exhibit. Dan promised he'd buy me a tiera when he became famous. They had the most amazing little carved animals made out of gem stones. There was also a giant double-fired(?) fossil which shone beautiful reds, yellows, and oranges. I also love seeing the usual stuff- especially the Native American baskets, the Mayan artifacts, and the headdresses from Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Americas. They had a few very intricately carved caskets from Indonesia I believe which were in the shape of animals and one from Central America carved as a Jaguar.

I'm going back in May for the Warriors. Onyx, trip, y/y?

We then went down to Old Towne Orange and went to my favorite little cafe bistro place. I had chilli, a chicken chipotle panini (which comes with pasta and a bite size desert chocolate chip cookie), and chocolate gellato. It was freezing out, but I don't get gellato every day.

We drove back the canyon route and the creek is full and rushing which makes me happy, because we needed the water. It was my first time driving through it since the fires and some areas are entirely back and the trees that once covered over head were no longer there. It was sad, but it's still beautiful.

And then we spent all night playing Uno and watching Austin Powers. Next time they come down, provided there is no rain, I'm taking them to San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point.

To make this an official fannish entry- my copy of Diablo II arrived and I think I'm going to choose the Amazon class.

BANKSY!

There seems to be a big surprise for the season if you go to the main page of Banksy's website and click "www.santasghetto.com" at the bottom. I'd direct link there but the line about the NY show (which I was actually trying to look for info about) is funny. And then go click Wall. Trust me. It's awesome. More awesome than the first time Banksy did it, because there are more street artists involved.

Unfortunately, the site closes on the 25th. I will probably be OC saving every image as it updates, but I want to save the whole thing. Is that possible?
