Over on LJ, rachelmanija and lady_ganesh have created a fandom auction in support of marriage equality. Short version: people sign up and offer fan works or miscellaneous items, bidding occurs from July 1-15, and the winner of each auction donates that amount to the marriage-equality charity of their choice, and then enjoys their winnings. Similar to the sweet_charity concept, if you're familiar with that, only without the central fund-gathering function. For more details or to ask questions head over to livelongnmarry.

As I posted in my previous entry, SixApart is issuing $30 gift certificates to use at DonorsChoose.org as long as you email them by 5 PM Pacific on Monday.

On this LJ, I have 226 mutual friends and 192 others who have friended me*. That makes 418 people. If all of you - or even half of you - managed to email SixApart and get the $30 gift certificate, that would be a huge chunk o'change to give.

Bearing that in mind, I've just created the Manga Matsuri Challenge on DonorsChoose ("matsuri" means "festival"). I found three proposals to purchase manga for the classroom, to tempt reluctant readers and to help kids who are desperate to read more manga but can't afford it, and put them all on the challenge. The total amount of money needed is a hair over $1200, but anything you can donate will help. If the half of you I mentioned above only donate $10 - one-third - of your gift certificate to this challenge, we will raise all the money needed.

You can choose what projects you want ~~your~~ SixApart's money to go to (help SixApart fund future fans! XD), and you don't have to donate all or even part of yours through this challenge, but I hope you consider it. And if you have a hankering to donate some of your own money in addition; why, that's even better!

And please publicize this! Far and wide, on LJ or off. Link to this entry or to the challenge's page, but I think I did a better job of pleading the case here. :)

* And honestly, the only reason I haven't friended you back is that 226 number you see - if I friended you all back, I wouldn't have any time left! And yes, I do feel sad about that because I meet some awesome people here.

I've posted a fanart meme over on LJ - it boils down to: people request art from one of the fandoms I listed, I pick 5 by roll of the dice, and post it, but in turn you need to produce a pic from the same fandom (Stick figures OK!) for me. XD Comment over there, please, so I can keep track more easily.

It's only open 'til 6PM Central time today (Monday), but any requests posted after that will go into my General Inspiration File and may or may not see life.

...anyone want to write up a SHORT SHORT Bleach story so I can draw a (short!) doujinshi? I wouldn't be able to start real work until after I get back from Japan, however I'd like to start as soon as possible afterwards, since I'll have to be doing other projects near the end of the fall semester.

Well, I've got this idea for a Death Note doujinshi rattling around my brain...

...but while I've got the story, I don't have the plot. I think I've got the emotional heart of the story, and I've got the setting and setup, but I haven't figured out any of the details. And the usual people I bounce ideas off of haven't read Death Note yet, although they say they will, so I can't talk about it to them without Huge Honking Spoilers. *glares at mothoc, chibipoe, and a couple of others not on LJ*

So ... if any of my (very few, on JF, but this is crossposted) readers out there is willing to bounce ideas around, let me know. If you haven't read DN yet and want to, let me know. I can hook ya up. (it's got stunning art, IMHO, and great writing that actually manages to survive translation, in some cases through two languages.)

Mind you, I don't have the time to draw it at the moment what with One Thing And Another, but I'm looking at a possible late-October time to start drawing, if my schedule remains the same. It'd be nice to actually have a script by then. *sigh* *whine* *arg*

I did some lineart of a character from Shaman King, because The-Z posted this CG of Silva, and said she'd send cookies to anyone who drew her pictures of him in his suede-fringe jacket and sunglasses.

Every time I attempt to post JF goes down for a few minutes due to the load. I no longer ven care about this, but figured I've been trying to hard to post it, might as well.

My two cents on the whole f_w thing for the three people who read my JF, only it's not going to be too much on what everyone else has been saying, because I don't see the need to repeat it, and instead my thoughts on community dynamics. This was originally composed as a reply to someone's comment on the f_w entry about the whole thing, and not posted because JF went down for a few minutes.

I fail to see how deleting a comm with no explanation will produce good results. The mods' stated reason for doing it was basically because the community had been going in a direction they didn't like, and I"m nto sure where they expected that unexpected deletion would produce anything except more of the same.

Hell, I might even have been all about taking it offline for a week to cool things down, if the mods concerned had posted and said "Hey kids, go stand in the corner for a week and think about what you said."

I'm not sure I'm exactly clear on why people think f_w's going to shit, but I do know that a community - any community, offline or on - is the sum of the behavior of its members. Self-policing works to produce behavior that is acceptable to the current members of the group. And as members come in and out, standards shift to reflect the current members. This is natural.

This is also a function of growth in membership. Self-policing works best when the community is fairly small and everyone feels an equal level of commitment to the generally accepted standards of behavior. As a community grows, the membership get diverse, and not everyone has the same commitment to the community or to the standards. This isn't something to get angry about, it's /normal/.

If there's going to be an independent standard of behavior that is not to change as the membership changes, it's going to have to be clearly spelled out on the info page (I know, it is) and in periodic postings so that everyone is clear on exactly what that standard is (because even though they should, people don't go look at the guidelines unless they're shoved in front of their noses), *and* it's going to have to be enforced, and its going to have to be enforced in public so that people can *see* it's being enforced, and it's going to have to be enforced in a way that makes sense. Not in this random deletion thing that leaves most of the community members confused about what's going on and why it was done.

Time to take *off* the anthropology hat and start pointing and laughing again.

After sitting thsi afternoon at a book swap and discussing life, the universe, and fanfiction with a friend, while bemoaning how hard it is to find readable fanfic (and since I'm a snob, I've got overly high standards for it), I finally decided to put an idea I had into action and create an LJ community dedicated to recommending good fanfics. It'll probalby vanish into oblivion like most LJ communities, but I'm hoping that I'll get at least a few recommendations for things I haven't discovered yet.

Anyone interested, it's at fic_sans_pareil. Membership is currently by request, but that's because I have this vague sense that people might actually read the community info first if they have to request to join. I am probably wrong in this. Nevertheless, please be reassured that I'm just going to add everyone who requests to join.

Other than that ... not much happening. I set a kiriban of 2000 on my DeviantArt page and ollin was the 2000th visitor to my page, so I'm working on a drawing of Kabuto from Naruto for him.

[ edit ] Forgot to add -- fanart recommendations are also welcome on fic_sans_pareil. Same deal as the fic -- a well-written bit on why they're good and why you recommend them. Doesn't need to be really long, but enough to give clear reasons why you found them worth bookmarking.

art: got the lineart done for a spiffy dynamic piece that I'm going to *attempt* to color tomorrow using Magna Carta-inspired palette and color blending. I really like the lineart. Must remember to save it separately so I can go back to it if necessary. Planning on bonking the piece over to my art director when its finished to say SEE! I CAN TOO DO FULL-COLOR ACTION PIECES! GIVE ME COVER WORK! NOW!!!

writing: not a damn thing. angsted for a while about it not being weird enough, have a few vaguely-formed ideas about how to weird it up a bit, but since there's an art show in five days and five dragons due to my art director the week after, it's currently Not A Priority.
