WTF?
Okay. I finished the RGB story. It's fifty pages, near enough 20,000 words and I'm fairly happy with it, if a litle worried about the characterisations and creeping briticisms. So I asked for a beta on list. Now, this might not have been the best way to find one, but hell, I'll never know if I don't try.
So someone emails me back privately, says she will do it if no one else volunteers. Not exactly enthusiastic, but y'know, I'll live with it. I recognise her name, she's written some Sentinel. Maybe it'll be fine.
I specifically asked, twice, for comments on characterisation and briticisms. Once when I made the general request on list, once when I sent the story off. So I'm hoping she wasn't going to volunteer if she wasn't willing to comment on those things. And once in more detail in private.
Today I got back 'pretty good', and five (count'em!) comments. One of which was 'there's something grammatically wrong with the above paragraph', but didn't say what made her think so. (And it's nothing a couple of commas couldn't fix. It's dialogue. Dialogue does strange things.) One was a very good point about gender neutral pronouns. The other three comments were two spelling mistakes and an uncapitalised first word of a sentence.
In a fifty page story in a fandom I have only really been interested in for ten months, she has no comments at all about briticisms or characterisation? When I *do*?
WTF? Could I at least have a 'you're paranoid -- shut up and go away'?
