To be brutally honest, I've never liked the 'muse' thing either. From my (admittedly less than all-encompassing) experience with writer's groups, I've found that people who claim to have muses, get blinding flashes of inspiration, have stories that 'run away with them', or write based on a strong sense of an individual character's personality rather than a plot or theme idea produces work that appeals less to me personally than those writers who plan and stay in control. Also, the idea that some muse comes down and whispers a chapter in your ear reminds me of the sorts of people who tell me that God will help me get over pinkeye, and when I tell them that the doctors and my immune system will take care of that, they tell me that God created doctors and my immune system. Way to take genuine human effort out of the picture. |
