I'm always kind of surprised when people talk about how disappointed in Obama and how he's not fulfilling his campaign promises or being as liberal or actiontastic-changerrific-Martin Luther King as he was supposed to be.

I am surprised because

We know how this works already, right? If you're a politician, you say whatever the fucking hell will get you elected. You noticed how McCain staffers thought Palin shat rainbows until the election was over, right?

THAT'S BECAUSE THEY LIED. I'm not saying Obama is a bad person (relatively, as we are talking about people who deceive, inveigle, and obfuscate for a living), I'm saying it was his job to lie. Something he did great! Now it's his job to actually Do Things, which is actually not going that great, but that's a different story altogether.

I mean, I know Jon Stewart was talking about how flowers and bunnies appeared whenever Obama was near, but IT WAS A JOKE. He's shown quite clearly that while he might, might care about gays, the environment, and so on, he either (a)doesn't have the ability or (b)doesn't care enough to get shit done. Maybe a combination of the two. I'm sure it's hard to get special snowflake Democrats to do anything, but I'm also sure that if Don't Ask, Don't Tell was that damn important to him, he would have killed it off by now.

I also don't understand what people are talking about when they gush about what a great speaker he is or how charismatic he is. I'm not just seein' it, dood. From what I do hear of him speaking, he doesn't really have a sense of timing and his speech doesn't sound very natural. In fact, I can completely understand why he had so much trouble convincing people that death panels didn't exist (although I still don't understand why they'd think death panels existed IN THE FIRST PLACE). I dunno, maybe his prepared speeches work better.

I guess he's got to have something, though, because people love him for no good reason that I can think of.

Because he's not George W. Bush.
(I'm not even being facetious.)

Disclaimer: I'm generally ambivalent to Obama. I stopped reading political news because it tends to surpass my rage quota for the week with just a few sentences.

And to some people, such as yourself, that might not be a "good" reason, for others, they consider it "good enough."

A number of politicians/upper level management have managed to throw themselves into the fray simply by billing themselves as "Not My Predecessor."

(seriously, how often do you see stores/restaurants billing the whole "under new management" thing? it's a powerful thing to say "yah, well, we're not THAT GUY")

Oh, I am becoming depressed now.

I don't really watch the news anymore except on the Daily Show because watching people lie through their teeth made me want to punch someone. NPR is okay, because there's no pointless screaming at each other.

But I mean, how long can you love someone for not being Bush?

I think it's also that he's black, but he's like the whitest black guy ever, wtf?
