* By the way, I think it's totally lame that posting my <strike>Suikoden/Fire Emblem fanfiction</strike> SRS BZNS NOVEL surrenders all these Super Important Rights. If/when I finish it, I'll only be submitting it for the lulz anyway.
* Okay, Rain, I'll watch your damn <strike>abs</strike> movie.
* Wouldn't Kuroshitsuji get old after, uh, ONE episode? Or is there some sort of overarching amazing plot involved? Because it seems like every episode would basically be:
+ Dumb and/or corrupt man/woman shows up
+ Ciel smirks
+ Sebastian smirks
+ PUNISHMENT PUNISHMENT DOOOOOOOM

I feel like I've seen this before, to varying degrees of success. If your gimmick is old, you kinda have to find ways to keep viewers interested. Jigoku Shoujo had the moe internet curse angle (seriously, though, they were REAAAALLY reaching at the end), Pet Shop had the vaguely homoghey relationship between D and Leon, and Neuro, of course, had Koyasu Takehito giggling like a psycho and doing ridiculous asspulls every episode.

And did I last exactly one episode with Kuroshitsuji :/. I think I am becoming an anime giraffe, stretching my neck longer and longer to reach only the choicest morsels, having evolved myself out of eating the things that are way more plentiful and would make more sense, like generic magical girl shows or apples something. But I will NEVER STOP, you hear me? I WILL NEVER STOP LOVING ANIME YOU BLOOD TRAITORS LOLOL

I had an unusual dream last night, which was that I had returned to the past; specifically, elementary school, (Jill and I went to the same school and were even in the same homerooms for some time before our teachers figured out that keeping us together in class was disruptive. Boooo!) She and everyone else seemed remarkably cogent for elementary schoolers.

Anyway, I got to go back and experience all sorts of past phenomena, like Magic cards and Windows 3.1 (I was excited because Myst was going to be coming out soon) and movie tickets that were five bucks apiece. Also, adults were a lot nicer (the world in general seemed a lot nicer when I was younger, probably because I didn't have to work and people really baby small children along and I didn't have to worry about rape and crime and war and Lyme disease). And the colors were so much brighter and I didn't have to worry about germs. I also contemplated investing in Microsoft so I would have a million monies in the present.

Realistically, though, I don't think I'd be able to fake it through 10 or so years of school trying to act like a normal kid. In fact, I'm pretty sure it would drive me insane. Also, people didn't come up with handheld games and other stuff that could relieve me of my massive boredom until later. I did have a few of those lousy Tiger handhelds like:

Jurassic Park: This game involved pressing a button to walk down a path (I guess to safety?), and your travels were occasionally marred by the appearance of DINOSAUR. So there'd be a raptor or something and you'd have to hide up a tree, or there'd be a dilophosaur. Eventually they'd go away, but you had to make a certain amount of distance per level or you were doomed, DOOOOMED. I think I got to the end once and I finally got to give it to those damn raptors. In fact, I think it was by turning on an electric fence and zapping them to death, at which point I would yell, "Yeah, you like that? TAKE YOUR MEDICINE! Yeah, I fixed your little red wagon, didn't I? How does that taste, huh? How does that taste?" except I don't think I was coherent enough as a child to come up with that level of mockery.

X-Men: You played Cyclops. Inexplicably, because Cyclops is like the lamest X-Man ever. Anyway, you walked around and shot eye beams at people (I think I remember Mr. Sinister and Sabretooth, but it's hazy). Occasionally, an X symbol would show up and you'd grab it so Wolverine would come in and CLAW EVERYTHING. Seriously, I know Cyclops is lame, but did Wolverine have to show him up so dramatically every level? Why didn't they just make him the main character? As a child, I remember thinking that it was probably because that would have been too awesome.

Sonic the Hedgehog: This was actually the best of the handhelds I played. I think they actually got in some music from the Sonic games, and since Sonic games were mostly jump and smash things anyway, it translated pretty well. There were even loops you could go through, in that limited LCD screen sense. Hey, what was the name of that handheld Sega console that came out years back? Game Gear? I remember being amazed by the <blink>color screen!!!</blink>.

Well, before that huge digression there, I was going to say that I was and still am easily bored. And now that I'm older, I get bored and depressed. And that's why you should never pay attention at meetings. I wonder if I still have some of those old crappy stories me and Jill used to draw in elementary school. That was back when I liked Anne McCaffrey. Yes, even middle schoolers have the sneaking suspicion that Anne McCaffrey is kind of a dick.

That was back when we really liked dragons. There was also a period in which we really liked ponies (specifically, unicorn-pegasi) and we wanted to be unicorns for the Kindergarten circus but our teacher said, "THERE ARE NO UNICORNS AT THE CIRCUS," so then Jill got to be a pony and I had to be a tiger, not that I'm secretly bitter about that that at all. Here's where I say something really incoherent, like, "WHERE WERE YOU WHEN I WANTED TO BE A PONY". I am tired and got up at 5:30 today. I get up at 5:30 every day. That is way too early.

Am I supposed to change my filter, or rinse it off and put the old one in :/ ? It says to change it every 3-4 weeks, but as usual, internet advice is different.

Anyway, I got NEW PLANTS today, and spent some time planting them for the Gang. After the initial "OMG! ONOZ!" reaction, they started giving the plants little nips and zipping around curiously, so I take this to mean All Is Forgiven, Giant Hands.

I am happy, too, because they shall have more stuff to poke at.

So, here are my water test results:
pH: 7.6
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: .25ppm
Nitrate: 20ppm

I think I should keep an eye on that nitrate especially. I've been using this weekly water additive called EasyBalance that supposedly has "Nitrate Reduction Granules", but I think I'm supposed to have 0 of both nitrate and nitrite.

Platies: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21334371@N03/sets/72157622848521702/
Geese: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21334371@N03/sets/72157622848496918/ (from the Pittsburgh trip)

ETA: After I put that weekly stuff in, the test is now 0ppm nitrite/10 ppm nitrate.
If anyone knows what the hell is up with KIBA, I would love to know. I stopped watching because

(a) I was pretty sure it was all going to end in tears (see also: Wolf's Rain)
(b) As each successive episode aired, it had me asking, "What the fuck is going on?!"
(c) It's kind of derivative, like that Avenger thing about Mars or something and then no one could have kids and WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT SHOW?

KIBA is about a kid named Zed who is kind of an asshat and then he is transported to a Magical World (TM) with magic, where he is still an asshat. He also has a super powerful spirit named Amil Gaoul who is awesome and kills things but mostly it's about Zed and his annoying uke brainwashed friend Noa, who is so incredibly annoying and brainwashed he spends a good deal of time contributing to a false sense of dramatic tension by murdering people because... um, someone told him to? It's kind of like Miaka and Yui, if Miaka was a power-hungry jerkoff with absolutely zero social skills.

But they are BEST FRIENDS AND YET ENEMIES.

It gets to a point where they're constantly introducing various half-explored characters and countries and then something happens and everything explodes, but then for some reason Zed (who goes through 51 episodes and is still, somehow, an asshat) merges with Amil Gaoul or something. I watched a full half of this series and I still have NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON, which I guess happens a lot when you mix together a bunch of things you liked from other cool anime shows but actually have no idea what you are doing.

Stop trying to blow my mind, Japan! It never works!

Okay, I just saw a listing with a HUGE DARK STAIN on the hardwood in two of the pictures.

"Not a short sale or foreclosure"? I could believe that. It looks more like someone bled out all over the floor.

I don't even know if I WANT to buy a place. Up to $300,000?! That's like more money I've seen in my life! (And you should see some of the crazy shacks people want to sell for $250,000, let me tell you internets) Argh, housing is such a pain. The real estate agents, and the lost weekends, and the... ARGH.

So, to summarize, here are the reasons for and against moi buying a house/condo/townhouse:

For

Against

* More room for fish
* I actually own something for all this money I'm paying
* Decorating new place + more room for stuff

* Stuck in the same place for years
* HUEG DEBT weighing me down like a millstone :DDD
* A billion hours of stress, research, and negotiations

And wouldn't you know it, the thing I am most excited about is decorating and more fish. I don't really like the idea of owing people things. I don't think I've ever bought anything I couldn't pay for, but since housing is so monumentally expensive, it'll be 30 YEARS until I can pay it all off, and how do people take the pressure? Jeez.

On the other hand, I guess it's better than paying rent. I mean, either way you need to pay something monthly, but at least you own something at the end of it :/.

You know what would be hilarious, though? I would probably have to...

...get a roommate. LOLOL I hope the market's better than in New Haven.

Yesterday I went to my mall pet store, which inexplicably had much happier-looking fish than the last place. It also had super awesome fish, like a big silver arowana that glared disdainfully down at me and a sleepy lionfish. I'm not buying any fish atm, but I like looking at them.

So, the next step up from a 5 gallon tank would be... what? I'd like to get at least a 20 gallon, because I want morefish and more room for plants and hiding places. Still freshwater, although I think it would be awesome to eventually have a marine tank with coral and everything. Also, any suggestions for types of fish/plants/whatever?

And how come every single piece of fish advice on the internet is different >:(?

Well, not that she expects to sound like him, she just wants her, um, instrumentals to sound more like his?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAHAHA okay it's kind of mean to laugh at someone I know next to nothing about, but hell. But she always drones.

Tom Waits routinely howls, screams, snarls, and croons in what has been fairly accurately described as werewolf language.

(2)Instrumentals: Tom Waits uses a "giant four foot dried, curling, boomerang seed pod from the Botang Tree that grows only in Indonesia". His band routinely sounds like they're playing in a seedy, gin-soaked nightclub on the pier. End discussion.

(3)Lyrics: Because they often sing about completely different topics, I have copied two depressing songs which involve frustrated romance.

Don't Know Why
Nora Jones
I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road along

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

Tom.

I will freely admit that I'm ridiculously biased towards Tom Waits. And he and Norah Jones aren't even playing to the same audiences and I'm sure more people prefer Norah. In fact, it can be relaxing to listen to as long as you don't listen to it to it that often. But I pretty much agree with the Washington Post on this one: Norah Jones IS minivan music. And, um, her new album? Still minivan music. And all that talk of new edginess is really lollerskates.

Also, John Mayer wanting to be "more mainstream", Post? Really? John Mayer? Singer of "Body is a Wonderland", one of the most obnoxious pop songs ever to assault my ears?

The lord is a very, very busy man.

Uh, so. If you like Japanese CG bio-armor cyberpunk, CASSHERN MAY BE THE MOVIE FOR YOU!

It appears to have very little in common with the anime Casshern. And I don't really know what's going on half the time, it's so incredibly visually confusing.

Tetsuya, the son of the famous Dr. Azuma, leaves to go fight in a war between the Eastern Federation and Europa (Asia and Europe?) in a ridiculously apocalyptic future in which humankind suffers from mutations, radiation, toxic waste, etc. Meanwhile, his father is hard at work using Neo Cells from some kind of rebel faction to try and create new organs for people, including his wife who has Chronic Plot Wasting Disease.

Tetsuya dies and when his body is brought home, uh... a GIANT FUCKING MECHA LIGHTNING BOLT COMES OUT OF THE SKY AND TURNS ALL THE NEO CELLS INTO HUMAN BEINGS WHO CAN SPEAK PERFECT JAPANESE.

And then it gets weirder.

I, seriously, what?
The evil guys:
White-haired leader guy!

Henchman #1: The chick! IT'S THE SONG WHEN BAD SHIT IS GOING DOWN AND THERE ARE ARRANCAR AND SOME SHIT
* A scene in which Henchman #2 and Tetsuya have an ULTIMATE SWORDFIGHT and then 2, um. Seriously, uh. Violently penetrates Tetsuya from behind and refuses to let him escape...?

I know I have no coherent reason here why you should possibly watch this goofy-ass movie. So, um. It's the campiest Darker and Edgier remake I've ever seen? And. There are pretty bishounen? And fighting? AND ROBOTS!

...why do my favorite characters always die :<? First Yakuza with Revolver in Versus, and now Katana Dude. SHENANIGANS.

I'm trying to think of some things to buy myself for Christmas. This is part of my larger plan to not become like my relatives, for whom Christmas is a time to drive a couple hours to someone else's house so they can get an electronic foot massager they didn't want anyway. When, in fact, the best part of any Christmas is PRESENTS. SHINY SHINY PRESENTS.

It's really hard to do keep track of irregular shapes. Like, an arm is one thing, as it stays relatively the same shape. But anime hair is CONSIDERABLY MORE COMPLICATED, especially if it has lots of little sections and shadows and highlights that need to be kept relatively constant and I guess that's why characters stand around a lot and Western character designs are so simplistic. Animation is expensive!
If you add, say, a moving camera viewpoint and the person is also not standing still, there's all kinds of shit you need to keep track of and Flash's onion skinning feature can be really confusing and busy.

Note that I can't possibly NOT have several things to keep track of, because otherwise I'll look lazy and the whole video is basically Kaito singing ANYWAY, <strike>and he doesn't even look like Kaito. </strike>

How the hell do you make things move slowly and still look okay? It's really hard to maintain that smooth look when you have to do a lot of drawings that are EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY different (say something slowly rotating). It doesn't look consistent argh.

Does... not... look like... KAITO. Honestly, I can't figure out his hair. Is it fine? Is it sectioned? Where is his part? I didn't want to keep his normal costume, which is too blue/white/yellow, but if I change it, will he actually be recognizable?

P.S. I would really appreciate it if people would stop posting their annoying AMVs on Youtube. This includes taking an entire block of unedited video and setting it to Evanescence or Linkin Park, which I think we can all agree barely even constitutes the label "AMV" at all.
So I went over to Petco to search for a castle or something new for my fishies to hide in, even though they seem relatively happy and I already have two things to hide under and a small plant because, well, I want something with a lot of holes so they can hide in them individually if they want. I have not caught any Gang members chasing the others around, but still.

And then while I was there I looked around at the other animals, who seemed pretty healthy (although how could I tell, really?) The fish section made me sad, though. I'm not really an authority on fish or anything, having just started keeping a couple, but the goldfish were all jammed in a big tank and the little marimo had detritus in them and when I looked closely, a lot of them seemed to have fins that were a little raggedy.

So, obviously my fish are babies, so their fins are new and shiny and floofy and perfectly delicate-transparent, and they might change when they become adults. Also, the platies they had seemed to be well off. Then again, platies are amiable little squirts (so maybe they don't bite as much) and there weren't as many of them stuffed into one tank (are they not as popular?) as the other fish.

And the bettas were all in tiny little plastic containers. Some of them were kind of swimming, but others weren't even visibly moving their pectorals and looked dead (they were not dead, however, as I moved one container slightly, and the little guy started before resuming his dead fish imitation. But they were all hanging out at the bottom of their container and looking lethargic.

D:

I never expected to say this, but he was actually remarkably cogent and ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS HE WAS ASKED. And then he explained mental function in PTSD veterans as a lot like engineering resilience. In other words, there's a delta value between the height from which you bounce, say, a rubber ball, and the height it returns to on the next bounce. Which corresponds to what soldiers lose as a result of wartime trauma.

An intelligent official who doesn't condescend to others or fill his speech with folksy fluff instead of actual content?

EVERYBODY PANIC /o/ \o\ \o/

In other news, I decided to work on the Flash movie, which, uh. All the new PS3s won't play PS2 games?

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU

Anyway, today I got a book about Alphonse Mucha and it's kind of like an extraction of what I liked about CLAMP (flowy things and details and intricate little design things in the background) without a bunch things I didn't like (girlygirly shoujo sparkles, HUEG eyes, ridiculously skinny characters).

Come to think of it, there's an artist that I like whose style is much more like Mucha's, but alas, I don't know their name because I only know them from 4chan posts. Google doesn't help either. The image search is flaky at best, and god knows what'll come up if I actually google the contents of the pictures.

"Winged unicorn armor man", "Angel flower halo man". Yeah, that's gonna be helpful. She does REALLY intricate, precise armor! There's like one with a guy with a unicorn horn, and one with this angel with a flower halo, and this one with armor that looks like dragon wings... it sounds incurably stupid when I try to describe it. This is going to drive me insane.

I need more icons. Now that I have a job, perhaps I shall GET more icons... *eyes basic account*

Peeeermanent account = $48... wouldn't you like 500 icons, hmm? Woooouldn't you? ONOZ I'M ENABLING *MYSELF* IT WASN'T SUPPOSED TO WORK THIS WAY

In other news, I have learned due to another JFer that dana is not merely mildly obnoxious, but somehow a gaping maw of passive-aggression and willful, horrifically sweeping ignorance. AIIIIIIIEEE I did not know get it off me get it off oh god I don't know what "it" is but there is no "it"-getting within fifty miles
