Millions of legs! [01 Apr 2010|04:34pm]
So today I found in my garden the biggest millipede that I have ever seen outside of a zoo. Of course I took pictures.

Now all under the cut. I went a bit crazy with the pictures. )

A bit of digging makes me think it is probably a Narceus americanus, a giant millipede, or somewhere in that complex.

Seed offer: Garlic chives [12 Oct 2009|07:34pm]
Once again I have a bunch of garlic chives seeds that could use new homes. Garlic chives, to me, taste milder than regular chives and make a good substitute for green onions in recipes. They're pretty much grow anywhere plants: outside, inside, in pots or whatever. They get largish, pretty white flowers in the late summer. Send me a pm or shoot me an email with your mailing address (octopus.gallery at gmail) if you'd like a package of them.

I'm also offering a deal where if you put a link to the shop on your lj or book of faces or whatever, I'll give you free shipping. Please, get this stuff out of my office!

JFC, I am so glad I don't have a Kindle [17 Jul 2009|04:27pm]
"This morning, hundreds of Amazon Kindle owners awoke to discover that books by a certain famous author had mysteriously disappeared from their e-book readers. These were books that they had bought and paid for—thought they owned."

That's right, Amazon went and deleted 1984 and Animal Farm from purchasers' accounts and then from their hardware. As my friend Nadia Lee put it, "Amazon deleting books from your Kindle WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION is outright theft, defnitly creepy, and utterly WRONG."

Cichlid sexydance success! [27 Jun 2009|08:49pm]
This evening, I checked the piece of slate I put in the Battlestar for the keyhole pair and found a sizeable batch of eggs being guarded by the female! \o/ This makes me happy. I thought about pulling the slate to raise the eggs out of the community tank, but cichlids make good and very defensive parents and right now they're going to be better at picking out unfertilized eggs and the like than I am. I might pull them when they get to wiggler stage if there looks to be a lot of predation going on, but for now I'm going to leave them. Yay babby fish!

This was definitely a welcome development after I found my red rainbowfish stuffed in a flowerpot in the back of the tank being chewed on by one of the ancistris. :((((( No idea how he got in the flowerpot either. Very, very weird.

Backyard paths 02

New stone path

Picked up a bunch of stone from the garden center today for about $40 and got the path done! I actually need a little bit more stone, but it's just bits and pieces. The pieces need to settle into the clay a bit and then I'm going to plant steppable plants around them. \o/

Whatever, it's not like I had anything pressing to do [11 Jun 2009|08:50pm]
Came home today to discover that some of my very first home-grown blueberries were ripe! So I spent a ridiculous amount of time taking ~*~artistic~*~ pictures of them before nomming them down.

They were very delicious.
