7:50p | My word count is pastede on yay Someone claims to have 'won' NaNoWriMo with 2.5 million words, a feat so fantabulous it apparently requires announcing twice. Unfortunately, checking out his website reveals that he used a less than conventional technique to reach this count: In order to compile so many words in such a short time, Leach leaned heavily on the Internet. He generated what he calls a “non-linear literary collage” by mining various blogs, chat rooms and fan fiction sites, grabbing whatever words caught his eye. “The talk pages of Wikipedia and the reader comments on io9.com were my absolute favorites,” he said. “These are my people. I shamelessly plagiarized their words -- even their misspellings and gramatical errors -- at every opportunity, combining the anonymous messages with recycled content from ‘Marienbad My Love’ and entries from my dream journal. I repeatedly cut and pasted and searched and replaced, transforming the various writings into a completely new and unique literary work.” NaNoers are Not Amused. Edited to add my favourite reply from the forums so far: Plagiarizing other peoples' words is not writing. It's plagiarism, pure and simple, contrary to the spirit of Nano. Not to mention that your pretense is so thick you could stand on it and not worry about sinking for a good three hours. 9:46p | A little Thanksgiving-themed wank for those celebrating the holiday! And heck, I guess those who don't can enjoy it too. I'd like to think of myself as a fair gal. So Furaffinity, a website for furry-themed art, changed its top banner for the holiday. Rather than the usual theme for these sorts of things like some character chasing a turkey/a bunch of people sitting down to a meal/a disappointed dude watching the Lions lose game number 5 million, they decide to instead go a different route. Namely by having their two mascot characters laying on a couch looking morbidly obese. On the original artist's upload there are both positive and negative comments along with much proclaiming that their fetish is NOT OK. Within minutes there are many journals on the subject. Some displaying total disgust about the subject manner while others tell everyone to (pun intended) lighten up. In one journal the head of the site, Dragoneer, mocks the people who are complaining about the banner: "Thousands of angry furries who can not take a joke are lining up!" He also edits the news post announcing the banner change to have what is supposed to be a link to a forum post discussing the subject, but is instead our old friend the Rickroll. There IS an actual discussion thread in the forums however, with the title "New Banner is tastless and disgusting". The poster of this thread, Rilvor, wants to start a petition to have the banner removed. Rilvor: "I would like to start a petition to have it removed. That banner makes me physically ill every time I see it. I do not appreciate having such content in this fandom, which I make a point to avoid, thrust into my face." The thread so far contains five pages of arguing over whether the banner is disgusting or not and people reminding others that it's only going to be up for 24 hours. ETA: Thanksgiving is over, and as expected, the banner is gone. However journals about it continue to appear! "All this pissing and moaning about the banner. I like the banner. I don't like the banner. Journals and forums and fucking petitions. You know what? People in DR Congo and Somalia are being attacked by rape gangs and war lords, their families are being murdered. People in North Korea are starving to death on the street. Massive terrorist attack in India. Etc." |

I don't watch Heroes, but here is my source's description: Heroes is kind of not such a great show as in "great show," but more like "trainwreck." 1:07a | The Lotus Boob! It does haunt my dreams! Over at PostSecret, Frank posts a postcard from someone containing a photo of the "Lotus Boob." (For those who aren't in the know, it's a picture of a breast that was clearly photoshopped together with a lotus flower and passed around the 'net as some sort of new horrible disease. Denounced by Snopes in 19-diggity-2.) Whingeing follows immediately. (See Frank's email picks near and around the offending secret.) Hilarious quote from front page: "This picture has destroyed my day and will haunt me for months if not years. My hair is standing on end and I haven't been able to stop shivering. I can't concentrate on anything now, my mind always returns to that horrific image. I am saddened that I can no longer view postsecret, but I am too worried about being assailed with another photo that will severely harm my psyche." Hordes of young girls are scarred for life and "kept up half the night shivering!" A thread is started on PostSecret Chat to determine whether the secret should be taken down. Some (read: most) dissenters claim that taking down secrets would completely ruin the spirit of PostSecret, and that there have been secrets that have been far more disturbing, like ones about rape and abuse. But it's a boob! With stuff in it! And now they'll never sleep again, and probably die and I HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY, POSTSECRET. Ahem... 101 pages of flouncing and crying in less than a day, and all I really have to say is, if your constitution is too weak to handle a little lotus boob, you may want to reconsider this whole "internet" thing. ETA: Bonus LOL: The random-lettered link to the secret includes the phrase "AAAAAAAAH." |

11:02a | It was sweet, and then the beak fell off. I think the theory that Meg over at Cute Overload occasionally posts questionable content just to fuck with her viewers maybe true. Yesterday, Meg posted this video which tells the touching story of a dog who comes to a farm as a puppy and the duck (a male duck named Sheila) who adopts him. Unfortunately, Sheila eventually dies of old age. That's where it gets weird. Sheila's owners decide to get the duck embalmed and present the stuffed results to the dog, who is very happy to see his friend again. So happy, in fact, that he knocks her fake beak off. The video ends with one of the owners dragging Sheila's corpse so the dog can chase after it. ( And of course, all hell breaks loose in the comments. ) ( You're all horrible people and I'm never coming back here again! ) And then someone reveals that the video was fake, made as commercial for an Argentinian Internet Provider. Their tagline translates to "Internet you talk about." ( This commercial is animal cruelty! ) There's more to the thread, including discussions on the merits of giving ducks wheels, people quoting sketches about parrots who are pining for the fjords, and the vegans also weigh in toward the end. I'll leave the parting shot to Sara here: If dragging my preserved body around the yard made my friend that happy, I'd be fine with it. ETA: Link to commercial fixed, sorry. 5:49p | Renowned anime director, Miyazaki Hayao makes some potentially controversial comments about the current Japanese Prime Minister emphasizing his liking for manga, anime/manga/games/etc. as a cultural export, and the dangerous effect of media on Japanese children. Also, the dangers of nationalism. Over at Anime News Network forum, people discuss this. Some agree with Miyazaki, others disagree partly or completely, some people express disappointment in Miyazaki and question the quality of his works, but overall the discussion is quite civil. The harshest comments so far: "One keeps promoting manga. One keeps making shitty anime. (...)" "The political comments are just elitist bs. (...) if he has stated publicly that other people's work in anime is crap, then that definitely qualifies him for a big [ignore] tag." Nothing too bad, right? Well, according to penguintruth, the thread is full of fanboy outrage and people are making "absurd, baseless accusations" and twisting Miyazaki's words "into a personal attack on them so they can get all riled up for no reason." And as we all know, "Making assumptions about Miyazaki based on a pretty reasonable statement and not supporting those assumptions with anything of substance is what we call "trolling", and it is the result of either willful ignorance or the intent to stir things up needlessly." Knowing the ANN forums it might be worth keeping an eye on this (unless a mod steps in). |

4:46p | S2 Layout Issues Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme. You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/the Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box. And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. In Japan there is an agency called Johnny's that is the major male idol agency in the country. Most of the most popular boy bands are signed with them, one of these groups is called NEWS. A few days ago a German NEWS fan chyco_chan decided to share scans from a German J-Pop magazine, that is notorious for poor research and nabbing whatever pictures they can find on the net for their magazine, as this time they snagged two pictures of NEWS/Kanjani8 member Ryo Nishikido for an article about gay life in Japan. In the words of chyco_chan: BUT why??? Ryo = gay??? XDDDD That's bashing XD (not even by us sou~ XD) She then tries to get people to contact Johnny's about the magazine to tell them about it in the comments as she's afraid of being blamed if the magazine goes out of business. And then cue the fangirl rage and lols at the article in the seven pages of comments this post has spawned. There is someone that questions the 'calling someone gay=bashing' of the OP but then goes on about homoerotic the pictures are, despite them being, y'know solo shots. And we have some minor capslocking of rage against other fangirls by bugattack. Plus rage against the magazine as this would 'hurt' Ryo if he ever saw it from yamapilovergyal. And many, many 'Poor Ryo' and 'Johnny's should sue' than it's worth counting. |
