    Hiding out in memes.
    Picked up from [info]sage_theory:

The one who seduced you and fucked you over and broke your heart in a million pieces and laughed about it: Stargate Atlantis

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp in the sheets: Harry Potter

The mysterious dark gothy one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 a.m. at weird coffeehouses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized he really was fucking crazy Christian: Lord of the Rings (book fandom)

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor, and whom you'd still really like to fuck again although you're relieved he doesn't actually live in town: Supernatural

    The steady: Stargate Atlantis

The one you repeatedly cheat on your steady with: Merlin

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with: Ironman

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with but ultimately you're just good buddies 'cause the friendship is there but the chemistry ain't: Supernatural

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool guy except it's never really gone anywhere: (I don't really have a good answer for this one)

The one you slept with on the rebound who still smiles at you, yet you have no interest in any more: Stargate SG-1 (so I made up my own)

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at him and thinking, "Him? How the hell did he land all these cool babes?": Dr. Who

The one your friend has fallen for like a ton of bricks and whom she keeps babbling to you about on the phone for hours, and you'd be happy for her except you just know it's going to end badly: Supernatural

On the End of Canon: What keeps a fandom alive?
A question came up on my f-list about the end of canon in Stargate Atlantis.

I'm not sure whether the imminent end of the series has any significant effect on readership

In the Harry Potter fandom it certainly didn't. I can't imagine the end of the series would have a significant impact right away. Quite the opposite. There's a spike in interest as people mourn, fret over what's not neatly tied up, are annoyed at the author's/PTB's ships, or just miss it and want more, darn it. In time I think it will taper off as people find other active canons and drift to new fandoms, but no boom is going to be lowered late December, no, not at all.

How active the fandom remains depends on the fandom:

    - Do the main archives, challenges, communities, still have people to run them? (Most Important Factor.)
    - Is the fandom old enough to have a solid body of work, and fandom tropes, to sustain it?
    - Are there lots of Swiss cheese-like holes remaining to play in?
    - How dependent on canon is the fandom (are the majority of fics episode tags, or have the fic writers embraced AUs and crossovers)?
    - How committed are the fans to keeping their fandom alive? Have fans declared that nothing will stop their ship? Or have they been ho-hum about the end of their series?
    - Are there other factors to keep the fandom alive? Spin-offs, movies, conventions.

Run, do not walk, to the Merlin kink meme.

Forget to get me something for my birthday? Feel a need to make the world a better place write more Merlin fic? I know just the thing. Although really, any of these requests would be lovely.

    SGA Fic: Out Of Bounds - John/Rodney - NC-17
You can get caught up here: Out Of Bounds.

    Title: Out Of Bounds
    Author: Icarus
    Rating: NC-17
    Pairing: John/Rodney
Summary: The competition season begins. "The Regional Championship had the tacky aura of a children's birthday party."
A/N: Thank you to my intrepid and tireless betas, [info]rabidfan and [info]roaringmice.
Previously in Out Of Bounds: Known more for his jumps than his artistry, figure skater John Sheppard hires ex-skating champion and "artiste" Rodney McKay to be his coach. Their teasing friendship warms into something more. After John's injury, an intense summer training, new choreography, and (unfortunately) dreadful costumes, the competition season begins.

    Merlin 1x10.
For those of you who haven't seen Saturday's Merlin ep yet, with gratitude to daneffew:

    hxxp://www.megaupload.com/?d=JXZXXGS1

Change hxxp:// to http://. It's an avi file with a .doc extension.

Now. I have Merlin fic to post. But it wants to be longer. What shall I do? Post part one now, and part two later (it doesn't leave you hanging in a major way) or hold onto it?

Oh, what a tangled web we weave... tuning up your bullshit detector.
    Tuning Up Your Bullshit Detector

There was a meme going around a year ago, having people list things they've learned in life. I couldn't think of anything at the time. But I've learned some things, and one of those is how to spot someone who's lying. The boyfriend and I play a game with 60 Minutes where he asks me, "Okay, is this person lying? How about this one?"

It's not perfect. I can be fooled. But I've put some time into learning how not to. I have caught more than a few liars in the act.

    First is to pay attention.

Recognize circumstances when you're likely to be lied to, so you're looking for it. Is someone embarrassed? Backed up against the wall? Are they being forced to make an apology? Do they have something to lose from telling the truth? Something to gain from telling a lie?

Remember that a lie is a sell job. Your belief is the goal. When someone tries to sell me a story, I sharpen up.

Major virus attack to prevent file-sharing
    Augh!

I was able to download the SGA episode last night. Now I'm trying to download the Merlin episode from a private server. Nothing's happening.

I went to a Megaupload link to download from there. Got the countdown. Then, when I went to click the button to download, I got the message to save the file... and then nothing happened.

Alarmed, I went to Mediafire to see if I could upload files. I pressed the "big green button" to upload files. Nothing happened. It didn't move me to the next menu.

Then I went to YouSendIt, logged in, and tried to upload a file there. It wouldn't let me even browse to the file to upload.

Remember the virus attack on Thursday that hit people downloading SPN's latest episode from mininova.org? That we weren't able to even access the mininova.org site afterward (and we still can't)?

It's bigger than that. This is a major virus attack aimed to prevent people from sharing files.

    1) Stay clear of mininova.org. That's where it started.

    2) Spydoctor and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware both say my computer's clean. Obviously that's not true.

    3) If anyone has any ideas how to deal with this problem, any at all no matter how far-fetched, please let me know.

    4) Any ideas how I can get the Merlin ep? My friends? I was able to download the SGA episode last night, but it was labeled a .doc file. Maybe that gets around this. Is there a way I can watch online? Email it (can one email a 350 meg file)?

This isn't fair. These are free TV shows I'm downloading.

    Merlin fic brewing....
Okay, okay, so I swore I'd write no Merlin fic before its time. I'd finish my massive WiP first (which is getting close to done... ten scenes before I hit a major pre-written section from this summer... 20 scenes beyond that... visualize a bridge, with most of it built, and large struts sticking out of the water, it's like that).

But just one little Merlin fic? After I write the next four scenes of Out Of Bounds? I'll be good.

Catch it early, I said. Avoid the worst of it, I said.
Thought I'd dodged the bullet when WG brought home the flu for my birthday.

Clever and wise, I opted to stay home in the early stages. Then, the thinking went, I would not get as severely, horribly sick. I had a live example in WG to convince me that this was a plague to be avoided. He moaned in his sleep. I still haven't forgotten last year's flu.

How well did my plan work?

    Guess.

It might have been the miserable damp weather yesterday. I should have taken the car rather than stand in the rain at the bus stop.

Oh, what a lovely infestation I have.
Oh, wonderful. I tried downloading the latest SPN episode from mininova.org and got a virus infected file instead.

    Threat name: Trojan.Downloader.NUS
Threat level: somwhere between Kristallnacht and nuclear holocaust

Bonus? Looks like it blocks me from going to the mininova.org web page. I can't warn anyone. Except you, of course.

Currently cleaning it out with Spywaredoctor. Next I run AVG.

    S2 Layout Issues
Hi, Guys. I know a good many of the S2 themes are kinda hosed right now. Something changed with the LJ migration to their new data center. The Bloggish and Style Contest themes have their CSS hosted at LJ. That's by LJ's design, with how the code is distributed. The code is set to use LJ's CSS proxy to handle the access and display of the CSS settings. Since LJ's move, though, the CSS proxy has been kaput. But the CSS itself at LJ is still working. Until we can find a way around all this, a couple users have a way that you can use the Custom CSS in your customization area to get your layouts pretty damn close to the original for that layout and theme.

You'll enter two sets of code in that area. The first one would be the code from this URL:
    http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/common/base-weblog.css

Just go there, copy it, and paste into the custom CSS box.

And the second set you enter will be from the direct CSS URL for your specific theme. You can locate this URL by viewing the source of your journal in your browser (View Source code). If you scroll down to the <link rel="stylesheet" section of the source code, you'll see the direct url to your theme's CSS at livejournal. Go there, copy that code, and paste it after the base-weblog.css code above. Make sure you have "No" selected to use the included base code (it's a dropdown), and that the URL field above the custom CSS box is empty. Click to save changes, and your theme will display much as it is supposed to. There is occasionally an element like a border that doesn't come through, but it's pretty close. As an example of the CSS URLs, this is the one for the Baby theme for the Bloggish layout: http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml/themes/lilia/theme-baby.css The CSS URLS will be start with http://stat.livejournal.com/sixhtml with the rest varying by theme and layout. I'll still be looking for an alternative to having to futz with custom CSS, but in the meantime, that method of applying the CSS will get your Bloggish and Style Contest journal themes put back together pretty well. Thanks, Robin

And the banana peel award goes to....
A banana in my backpack plus large, heavy books = not a good idea.

    Who knew?

If people wrote fanfic about my life, well, these would be the sort of deep, meaningful lessons I learn. I like to think that John Sheppard does stupid things like this all the time, and only once he's with Rodney does anyone find out that, yes, John will put his shoes directly in front of the door and then trip over them.

There must be fic. Entitled "Could Have Been In Mensa."

Archive News, and my, that sounds official

In other, less squishy, news: I'm uploading my fic to the beta version of AAOOO (An Archive Of Our Own).

The tagging feature, when carefully thought out, is very, very cool. It will make finding exactly what you want so much easier.

For example, I have 18 stories uploaded so far.

If you remember a story that involves, say, sex toys, you go to my page, click Tags off to the right there, and then click the "sex toy" filter.

"Sex toy" brings up two stories, Bacchanalian Circuit (SGA) and Lost in the Temple of Law (SPN).

Now if you want to read someone else's "sex toy" centric fics, you click on the tag "sex toy." That brings up my two stories, plus two by Kass.

    Nifty.

Let me know if my tags work for you. This is to save you trouble later on, make it easy for you to find what you want, and help create a base of solid, (correctly spelled!), carefully considered tags for everyone.

Happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me....

WG has a pressie for me -- the flu!

I'm staying home, drinking juice, and hoping I can cut this off at the pass. But somehow I'm perfectly happy. I guess that's because WG's home too. And even though he's sick, he's here. And that makes me purr.

Ooo! Time to get him more hot tea.
