Orlando Bloom and Karl Urban. Cancelled Plans.
[Takes place the same day as Hayden and Sendhil's first break up.]

It's times like this that Karl considers taking up smoking. He slips out of the store and pulls out his cell phone. He can't spend another break inside. He might go crazy.

He pulls up Orlando's entry in his phone book, and sends the call through.

Orlando can't help but smile when he recognizes the ring tune. He needs to thank Hayden for doing that. "Hello?"

"Hey, you," Karl says, leaning against the side of Wizard Computers as he slips into the alley.

"Hey, yourself," Orlando smiles, going over to the microwave to supervise the popcorn.

"I have bad news."

"No you don't."

"I'm sorry, gorgeous. I have to stay at work. Justin's trapped in one of the circles of hell on one of his house calls, and won't be able to help Dave finish off inventory."

"And then you laugh, and you say just kidding, I'll be there in twenty minutes?" Even with the hope in Orlando's voice, he knows it's never going to happen. "Why are our bosses cock blocking us, Karl?"

"I don't know." Karl bangs his head back against the bricks. "My frustration is getting frustrated."

"Stop banging your head, you're making mine try and remember what 'hurt' feels like," Orlando says. He rescues the popcorn and starts shaking the bag... at least he's got food. "So even if you hadn't gotten stuck at the store, you'd be stuck on a house call from hell?"

"Yeah, pretty much," Karl says with a sigh. "God. I miss you, Orlando."

"I miss you too. I didn't even get to flirt with you at work today, because we got Justin instead," he sighs. "Not that I don't like Justin--I think he's charming--but he's not you."

"Of course he's not," Karl says. "Nobody's me."

Again, Orlando sighs. "I thought there was a rule about David not doing inventory. Am I making that up?"

"Unfortunately, with Justin not here, he needs to teach somebody how to do it. Apparently the new guy's... the guy."

"You're going to be the new guy forever, aren't you? It'll be eight years from now, and if they haven't hired anyone new, you'll be the new guy."

"That's probably very true."

"Where are you, by the way? I'm hearing car noises."

"I'm hiding in the alley. I can't take it in there right now."

Orlando blinks. "You're hiding in the alley? From David?"

"Well. Sorta, yeah. Dave's gone mad, and Joe won't stop calling to make sure he's not going mad."

"Are you sure you're not at Aesthetica right now? Because that sounds a lot more like my workplace, Karl."

"Apparently things go kind of insane in here at month-end," Karl says with a sigh.

"And things include David? But David seems so sane." Orlando really can't believe it. Especially not after how his day went.

"It's just... once a month," Karl says.

"And yet you're hiding in the alley. Well, if it's any consolation, I don't know that Justin's ever going to come back to Aesthetica, so maybe next time you'll get the call."

"What happened?"

"Well, Hayden performed her duties as stealth!cologne application girl when Justin got there, and I was off using her computer, and I suppose that Sendhil decided that Justin and Hayden were flirting, and hauled her off to his office," Orlando says.

"This... doesn't sound good."

"For someone who's quite the... office Lothario, shall we say, Sendhil is also rather possessive. And he decided that Hayden was going to leave him for Justin, from what I gather, and told her that she could just get on with that. Next thing I know, Hayden's running out of his office in hysterical tears, Santiago's office door is banging closed, then Sendhil's after her... more doors banging, more sobbing and hysterics. And now everything seems to be fine," Orlando says.

"Sendhil went off on a mad shopping rush and came back with a pile of clothes and lord knows what else, but in total, I think his purchases weigh more than Hayden. And she seems fine... she spent the day tear stained, and whenever Sendhil looked in her direction, she sniffled a little, but apart from that, none the worse for wear."

Karl's quiet for a moment. And then he says, "I really don't even know what to say."

"Neither did Justin. I think we might have scarred him for life."

"Poor guy. Should I buy him pizza tomorrow?"

"I think he might need it. I think his day might have ended up almost worse than yours. Except for the part where you're not coming over here, and neither you, nor I, are having sex tonight," Orlando says.

"Friday night. We should get together on Friday."

"You're not working on Friday? No close, no late shift, no food poisoning..."

"I'm working on Friday, but I'm not working on Saturday. I'm opening up with Dave on Friday, and I'll be out of there by five, he promises, 'cause of today, and then we can get together and I can make love to you, and we can lie around in bed all day on Saturday if we want."

Orlando can feel shivers moving up along his spine while Karl talks to him. "It sounds good... it sounds really, really good, and I really want to, and if it ends up being too good to be true, or something interrupts again, I have a horrible feeling that I might try and smother myself with a pillow."

"You're not allowed to do that."

"Well, jump off a building doesn't have the same punch when it's me."

"That's not funny."

"No, it's really not. My sense of humor is broken tonight, Karl, I'm sorry," Orlando says, stretching out on the couch and groaning. "Tell me again what we're going to do on Friday night?"

Karl smiles. "We're going to have dinner. And dessert. And we're going to sit on the couch, and pretend to watch a movie." He pauses, makes sure nobody seems to be around to listen in, then steps further into the alley between Wizard Computers and the used bookshop next door. "And while we pretend to watch the movie, I imagine there'll be snogging. A lot of it. And then I'm going to take you to my bed, and I'm going to make love to you."

Orlando groans again, but it's a very, very different sound this time. "I'm already looking forward to Friday. As in counting the minutes, let alone the hours, to Friday."

"Me too," Karl says. "Trust me. Me too."

"I'm so, so tempted to just say up late tonight and say screw Friday, come over whenever you're done but... it's gonna be hours, isn't it?" Orlando says. "And I've got an idiotically early day tomorrow."

"There is no way I'm going to rush this," Karl says, "even if I've been waiting way too long. It's only two more days."

"Two more days," Orlando repeats, taking a deep breath. "It's not that long, is it?"

"Not at all. Two more days." Karl glances at his watch, then sighs softly. "I've got to get back to work."

"I know... I've probably kept you too long. David'll be frantic," Orlando sighs. "Call me tomorrow? And be sweet to Justin... let him know that all of the yelling and hysterics here weren't his fault?"

"I'll call. Promise. And I'll let Justin know that. I'll talk to you soon, gorgeous."

"Talk to you soon," Orlando repeats. "Good luck, and goodnight."

"Goodnight," Karl murmurs, then ends the call and slips his phone back into his pocket. He wanders back out of the alley, smiling to himself. Two more days. Two more days! Nothing could get them on a Friday. He was certain of this. Fate wasn't that cruel a mistress.

He wanders back into the store--things seem a little messier than he remembered.

Later, he'd remember the pain in his head right before the world went black.
