Thanks to an offline friend who pimped it to me, I have been rabidly in love with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It is luverly.

On a whim I decided to see what the American voice acting was like today, since I've always just watched the subtitled Japanese version before. Here is my question: why does Wendee Lee seem to voice practically every anime heroine? Because I hate her High Perky Schoolgirl Voice to the very core of my being - it makes me twitch all the way down to the marrow of my bones - and hearing it come from Haruhi's mouth made me die a little inside.

(I don't really like High Perky Schoolgirl Voices, period. I can tolerate them in Japanese simply because I can't understand what they're saying anyway and I'm usually too busy reading the subtitles to pay close attention to the voices, so the beast that is my irritation slumbers.)

I mentioned this to Lysa a little while ago: it would be awesome if there were, like, some kind of JF gossip comm. Or not even a gossip column per se as a place you can be all, "whoa dudes check out the thing that is happening here". There's the _lounge comms, but those are kind of pan-fandom or pan-random or whatever, and what I really want is for some place where people say, "Hey, in case you're curious about what everyone is obliquely referencing when they talk about X, the link to the original tossup is here". And just that, not following that up with "Look at this awesome video on YouTube."

This comes up after spending most of the day puzzled by the references on my flist about something being The Happs regarding the lol_meme, which I don't belong to and thus don't generally care one way or another about. It CONFUSED me, since in my wank comm-centric JF world I imagined the memers had invaded one of the wank entries and were being dicks, and was desperate to find out where.

Probably this idea will be less cool once I've stopped being annoyed at having been mystified and convinced I was missing amazing wank somewhere, but I thought I'd get it out there, anyway.

I had an incredibly terrifying dream last night, and I am vaguely tempted to write it down and make it a horror story. The problem: A) I am terrified of horror stories, and B) doing that means I will have to think about this shit some more. And that housekeeper scared the shit out of me. So I can't decide what to do about it.

What the fuck it was I dreamt. )

Still alive! Stealing a brief bit of internetens.

I had to reschedule some of my classes today for a bunch of reasons, and the worst part of this is that it meant that there was that dreaded thing: a CONFLICT. Specifically, a class I actually do have to take overlaps with a class I don't but desperately want to. If it ever comes up: the single greatest history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and possibly OF ALL TIME, is a fellow named David McDonald. He looks vaguely like Harrison Ford (no, seriously - imagine Harrison Ford with a little more Irish to the face and that's basically Professor McDonald) and can make early Russian history hilariously interesting, and he is basically my favorite professor I have ever had.

Obviously I had to drop the history course (damnit). While I did so, I found myself muttering "I'LL GET YOU YET, MCDONALD. NEXT YEAR. NEXT YEAR."

Checking in! [19 Aug 2007|04:38pm]
I am still alive, as are all my relatives. Nothing really permanent has happened. I'll have to explain the Big Damn Crisis at a later point, I'm a little too wound up from it to do it right now.

Just for the record, I'm going to be low on the ground for the next couple weeks, at least. There's been a family emergency and I'm going to be having limited internet access.

THE RULES:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like your favourite lyric to your current favourite song. Or your favourite kind of sandwich. Or your favourite breed of tropical fish/kind of bug/breed of dog. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your JF with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions

Behind the cut: answers to questions! )

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

I should be living in a house next year, instead of the crummy apartment I was planning on. DELIGHTFUL. It has a back yard! And is cheap!

With the money saved I may finally bite the bullet and buy that paid account on JF that I've been wanting.

Woo, spam! [15 Aug 2007|01:16pm]
Because I feel like it, and because I am trying to use this journal more, a meme:

Name the top five supporting characters (book, movie, whatever) you think would be awesome as focuses in a series, rather than just as side characters.

A list, behind the cut! )

You know you've got issues when, upon realizing you've probably misspelled "fudgsicle" on your grocery list, you dutifully put (sp?) next to it.

Query:

So you know that old fantasy cliche where you have the powerful priestess/prophetess/whatever who must remain alive so she can Fulfill A Task and ends up with a studly protector who she normally ends up sexin'? I saw an ad for some game or another which apparently features that, and it got me thinking: are there any games/movies/whatever where the genders get switched around? Where it's the dude who's powerful-but-not-actually-a-fighter and it's the girl who's the professional asskicker?

I'm sure there are, but I'm terrible with remembering this kind of thing.

Is it just me, or is the internet apparently out of funny wank at the moment?

The closest I've seen to "actually funny" is a thing I will never dare post here, because it involves religion (and I have learnt my lesson, though it does make me want, again, to make [info]st_sassypants so I can have somewhere to share it). Alas!

TRAG-A-DEEE [26 Jul 2007|02:18pm]
I step out of the apartment for twenty minutes.

TWENTY MINUTES.

And I miss my AC adapter being delivered.

The UPS place is in a neighboring town (I have never figured out why there isn't one IN THE CITY where people CAN GET TO IT) and not on a bus route (because they hate poor people). And, alas, the people I would normally bum rides off of are out of town, and I can't really justify an expensive taxi.

So I have to wait ONE MORE NIGHT until I can finally have my laptop back in operation.

Woe is me.

My laptop's AC adapter is kapoot, and the new one does not even ship until next week (because my computer is ancient and hoary and therefore it was harder to find a place that even sold replacements). I can still use the school computers, of course, but it is very unhappy-making nonetheless. I will have to use a computer lab to frolic in the Potterdämmerung! Damnit.

On the plus side, I have been using the time to renew my affection for a number of books I haven't read in a while. I'd forgotten how much I both love and fear The Name of the Rose, which I maintain has some of the most terrifying imagery ever. Kids these days, we think we're so special, but when it comes to Shit That Ain't RIGHT in the imagery department, the medieval period still has our ass completely beat.

Also, is it wrong that I'm finding I kind of like some of the EU Star Wars stuff? (I happened to borrow a couple of books from a friend, including some of the comic books, and the latter in particular are delighting the everlovin' out of me.) I just . . . I really like the Old Republic stuff! And I never even bothered to see the third prequel!

One day to NS13 in Kingdom of Loathing!

Is it sad that I'm looking forward to the wank almost as much as I'm looking forward to the AWESOME NEW CONTENT?

In Kenosha, Wisconsin, there is a motorcycle dealer called Uke's Harley-Davidson.

My IMMEDIATE thought, thanks to Los Interwebs, was "The only way a uke is going to be touching the handlebars of a Harley is if he's gripping them while getting fucked up the ass by the bad boy seme who owns it, after being terrified/thrilled by a dangerous drive when he hitches a lift after his cute little moped breaks down."

I was hard pressed to come up with an explanation for my brother (who was driving) re: why I suddenly started chortling.

Things the internet has done for me:

Made me aware of how completely fucking moronic people sound when they say "We should have a White History Month! WHY IS THE MAN KEEPING WHITEY DOWN?!"

Goddamn you, Whitey.

(I actually think History Months are a flawed concept to start with, because what we REALLY need to do is revamp the entire way we teach history and work the material we cover during History Months into our general curriculum. But still, it's like saying there should be a Men's History Month, or a Rich People's History Month.)

Clairclairvoyantwank [16 May 2007|11:56pm]
I can't decide whether to put this on Clairvoyantwank. It's poliwank, for one thing, and I don't know if poliwank goes to CW, and it's still super small, but COME ON there is no way this is not becoming a wankapolooza somewhere.

(Lysaboo, it's political re: Ron Paul, so, um, just a head's up if you'd rather not read XD)

I must add yet another thing to my list of "Things I Wish There Were Fandoms For": Susanna Gregory's Matthew Bartholomew Chronicles. They are SO BADASS and yet have no fangirls, which is all the weirder since 90% of the cast is male. Admittedly, they're mostly not all that hot, and have hygiene issues, but god knows that never seems to make a difference. (See: Snape.)

Stupid non-existent fandoms, I NEED SOMEONE ELSE TO SQUEE WITH.
