12:10p - Plagiarism. ...Why?
I've been following the Viswanathan case. The list of books now includes Kinsella's Can You Keep a Secret?, Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Cabot's The Princess Diaries, and Hidier's Born Confused, in addition to the original passages in McCafferty's books. (A couple of cites for those not obsessively following the story.)
I have to admit that a half-million book advance and a movie adaptation might be good motivation for someone to plagiarize. But we see it not infrequently in fandom, where there's usually no financial gain. Why do they do it?
Obviously, this is my personal obsession, but I am genuinely curious why it happens.
