Piracy regarding...fanfic?

[info]megyal pointed out that someone seemed to be distibuting fanfic via e-mail without crediting the authors. It seems like a good idea morphed into something else and the now the list of fics has been pulled down.

Just want to point out that this has been happening time and again - people want an easy to download format for fanfics (because, hey, if you're travelling, it can really be a pain to save fics chapter by chapter to a word document/pdf/html file).

Rather than saving these fics ourselves and then sharing them underground without the author's consent, it would make more sense to go up to the author, ask them if we can host downloadable versions in an *official capacity* - in a sort of archive/database of downloadable fanfic, complete with links to the author's email and lj and personal website(s).

This way the whole of fandom wins cause readers get the quick solution for fanfic while on the move and authors get credit and exposure.

plz plz plz plz

Almost done with a layout for [info]hd_inspired - could y'all check it out and tell me if the colors clash (the dark green and bright red) or look odd on your computers? Or if anything looks off...

*tries to grin very encouragingly in a non-creepy way*

back from vacation and...

...in the past four weeks it seems like LJ was also on hiatus. Normally, I miss a few days and I can barely catch up - this time round, there's been hardly any activity what with boldthrough and the subsequent mass hysteria.

Not to mention everyone's moving to half a dozen new blogs. This is CRAZY. Most of us don't have the time to track even one f-list, let alone SIX. And having used RSS feeds since 2005, the current list of 26 feeds I have is already too much. Trying to track 100+ blogs on a daily basis via feeds is not a viable option.

*headdesks repeatedly*

Plus? The LJ clones (insane, greatest, dead, JF etc.) and blogs without options to foster communities (blogspot, wordpress etc.) aren't really long term solutions for fandom as a whole. And I wonder if sites like tabulas.com have the server power to handle all of us and our wank squee.

I feel exhausted just thinking about mirroring everything- which I will have to do though considering LJ can ban simply for hosting freaking links.

Any squee worthy stuff happen though? Need a distraction from this crap.

Aug. 6th, 2007

FYI

Am aware of current wank. Just want to mention that I'll be going where ever fandom goes and since most of its still on LJ, I'm not going to move any time soon. I may post up a mirror of my lj on any of the following after vacation, so feel free to friend them if you want:
My preference is for something other than an LJ clone, though I might not say no to Scribblit.

Still on semi-hiatus - gonna be heading over to Vegas from Canada tomorrow XD

Notice

Semi Hiatus

Am going on vacation with family to Canada, Las Vegas, LA and San Francisco for the next two weeks. I'll probably be able to get online off and on again but for now let's just say I'm out of the loop. If anything squeeworthy happens (which, with my luck, it will) feel free to holler here. Also, links to new H/D, AS/S and James/Scorpius fic? Send me them.

Unfortunately, I have no traveling macrololcat to add to this post :(

*hugs* Take care for now!

linksies...

I was *this* close to putting up a poll asking if everyone on the f-list was still avoiding the Deathly Hallows' spoilers. Then I realised it didn't matter what the poll said.

I am on LJ for the fandom squee. Which means I hate having to worry about every second sentence I type. So...

This LJ is going without spoiler cuts now.

If you are unhappy about this, you are free to de-friend. Oh, I do have one treat for you before the farewell - [info]fourth_rose posted a crack!fic prior to the book 7 release...I call it Harry Potter is Dead, Long Live Harry Potter.

Moving on to a post filled with squees and links to spoilery stuff...

[001] It's Harry's birthday and I almost missed it! Luckily, [info]fourth_rose's birthday ficlet was a fabulous reminder. It's hard to go wrong with crack XD Also, [info]lillithium's latest birthday artwork proves Draco is a hottie even with a receding hairline ♥ Happy Birthday Harry!

[002] Another Harry piece that is made of awesome and from the scene where Harry walks through the woods alone and...and yet not - credit to [info]hime1999 and linked with her permission.

[003] [info]slashcast and a few other HP!podcasts have been nominated @ podcastawards - do vote for them!

[004] [info]ladyjaida posted her first original slash smut fic, Riesling. It is hot and accompanied with artwork by the stunningly talented [info]lawrencered - *has thoughts of possible commissions in her head now*

[005] [info]buttfacemakani posted art of the Malfoys in the last chapter of book 7. It makes me want to hug Draco to death *pouts*

[006] I just realised that the commission I got from Makani is now dubious canon! JKR said Harry would join the Auror department so...(of course she also said one moment that Ron would be working along side him too...and then said in a later interview that Ron would be helping George with the joke shop..BUT STILL)

[007] If you have read Harry Potter and have not visited [info]last5, you should. [info]phuck has some of the most fantastic HP icons there - the text icons are to die for.

[008] [info]scoradh has a lovely Post-DH fic about the next generation of characters. She's got a wonderful take on Albus Severus and Scorpius - not to mention some hysterically original characters too.

[009] [info]femmequixotic has the best post-DH Draco!fic out yet: The Years That Walk Between. I'm still recovering from how awesome it is.

[010] Some lovely recs that have been piling up:
[011] [info]sherant did the blogathon for 2007, which meant lots and lots of art. The last piece is cracky in it's H/D love.

[012] [info]rurounihime posted The Bedtime Story - one of the obligatory veela stories every H/D author writes - but as always her take on it is Epic, and heart wrenching and shockingly good.

[013] Don't worry, my posts will most likely get less HP intensive given time. Oh and also! I may be on hiatus for week or two from the 2nd of August - *shoots family around her killer glares*

going to sleep but before that...

My sis splurged on tickets for Medieval Times - the dinner + show. We ended up in Yellow & Red - which turned into SUCH a Gryffindor House, because not only did our Champion knight win the Fair if extremely whiny Princess, he also became the sucessor to the throne. Which did not please me at all.

I was thinking "Anarchy baby" (ala Reese of Malcolm in the Middle) and hoping the evil!dude won and got rid of the idiot!princess.

Everyone I rooted for in the actual tournament ended up loosing - the Yellow & Red Knight was the first loser (at that time we didn't know he was sleeping with the idiot!Princess), then the Blue Knight (who was a total hottie) got pwned by the Black & White Knight, and the Green Knight (who was from a land of so called 'wretches') ended up losing to the winner, Black and White.

The funny thing was that as soon as Blue got defeated, Green challenged Black & White IMMEDIATELY which made me think the Blue and Green Knights were totally doing it. And Green being labelled as a evil!character made me think they'd ripped off JKR's policy on Slytherins.

Oh and the Black & White knight just made me think of a cow. I was happy to see him run through by the organizer who turned out to be the evil!dude XD

So yes, slash manages to find a way to surive in all forms of entertainment :D

P.S - On a different note, the First Impressions Meme has me here

not quite a hiatus yet...

'Kay, in Dallas with family and having almost no time for the internet. Woe.

I have one question for y'all though: if you could commission an amazingly brilliant artist to draw a scene/character/pairing for you, what would it be - my OTP is H/D but feel free to choose any fandom and idea in your head - and as many as you want.

I've commissioned three pieces in the past and I'll probably buy more in future - but IDEAS people - that is the issue.

So throw yourt art!bunnies at me.

*is hopeful*

classics/favorites in HP fandom...

There have been several fandom surveys and compilations of recs done on "classics" or favorites in the HP fandom - the first dates back to 2004 and the latest massive effort was done just last year.

HP fanfiction Classics compiled by [info]helkamaria (March, 2004)
Slash and Femslash Classics compiled by [info]switchknife (April, 2004)
HP Slash Classics compiled by [info]skuf (April, 2004)
What the fandom recommends compiled by [info]tarie (April, 2004)
New HP classics compiled by [info]abbycadabra (August, 2005)
All-Time Favorites compiled by furiosity (Nov, 2005)
Newest HP Slash Classics compiled by [info]skuf (July, 2006)
H/D @ [info]hpficmasterlist (August, 2006)

For a follow up in future:
  • as an *update* to the above lists, it would NOT include fics compiled in earlier lists. The fics above are already winners in their own right. It's be nice to showcase more recent work instead so that they get more exposure.
  • fanworks for pre-Deathly Hallows fanfic (and maybe fanart and misc stuff).
  • fandom classics/favorites in general (the recent popular fics that have been recced to death)
  • personal favorites that have the potential to become classics in a year or two (stuff that is very new and hasn't been seen by all of fandom yet)
Anything else to note?

I'll be driving to Dallas today and leaving for vacation with family on the 2nd - so if I were to start anything it'd be mid to end August. Also, I'd probably only focus on H/D. While [info]hpficmasterlist was a fanatastic piece of work - I'd go insane trying to do it.

Apart from all the clones...

...which blogging communities are you aware of? I do not mean JournalFen or Greatest Journal and the other LJ styled systems. I do not mean individual blogs like wordpress.

I mean blogging sites that include areas for groups and community stuff in general - icons, photos, links, friends/members.

Did find one that I'd ignored for a long time - the my.opera.com community. I hadn't really noticed any of it before except peripherally. The black out yesterday got me wondering though. It seems to be less for fandom and more for RL posts with friends and family though.

Plus, the layouts look pretty shiny, unlike most of the LJ clones which make my eyes bleed.

Any alternative suggestions?

ETA: [info]ivles pointed out tabulas.com which is FABULOUS. Someone's blog there + my own blog here

rec

Oye, my new Post DH slash ship is alive.

[info]meitachi, in a week full of the chaos of moving, your writing made me forget *everything* but the love of a fabulous new pairing.

Icons - HIkaru no Go (OVA)

This batch of icons is for The Phuck Attack Icon Challenge.

As always, you can edit these (as long as credit is given for the bases)

BTW - these are on imageshack for now since they would not upload via semagic to scrapbook :(

Question...

When LJ goes down, where do you go?

Jul. 23rd, 2007

New community

Since I cannot find a community for it, I created [info]hp_tng, a post-DH community.

Description of community that is unfortunately spoilery )

I've added a layout, header, tags, intro post, interests and bio. If anything is missing please holler.

If anyone is interested in becoming a mod (if it ever takes off) do drop me a note.

*crosses fingers*

It figures this would happen...

So I've been reading the new DH fanfics coming out, particularly those at [info]the_ass_ship which are delightfully fun (and also locked to members only in some cases). However, I have come to realise something rather unfortunate...

spoilery if you've not read DH's Epilogue )

Jul. 22nd, 2007

Ok, I'm thinking the deluge of DH posts is slowing down...maybe. Ah, screw it.

[001] Fandom can make any craptastic epilogue cracky and fun with fic like this. Two others here and here. Obviously DH spoilers abound.

[002] There were other new ships formed from the DH epilogue - some less cracky but just lovely. Don't believe it? Check out the new fic by [info]sam_storyteller which is accompanied with fabulous art by [info]elaboration.

[003] [info]furiosity posted a Harry/Draco fic that is DH compliant. Meaning she makes the ship work brilliantly despite the most obvious...issues. Run over to read Indomitable. It's no wonder I wasn't really stressed about the book. FANDOM PWNS EVERYTHING.

[004] [info]lillithium has improved on DH with a series of wonderfully cracky H/D takes on certain scenes. My favorite. This one pwns too, despite it not quite being H/D. They link to the other art pieces too.

[005] Finally something non-spoilery - but to be safe, don't read the comments. [info]ponderosa121 did some lovely Draco art. *bounces*

[006] [info]potterpuffs drew a couple of DH scenes. I don't really need to say anything, do I?

[007] Last piece of art for now - it's Severus...and Snape. If you've read the last book, check it out.

[008] If you haven't taken the Book 7 reaction poll, would love it if you could :) Though I'm not sure how some people are finding it...

ETA: Forgot! All the wank that follows the last book can be summed up in a single picture.

Jul. 21st, 2007

Deathly Hallows poll!

After reading the book, would love to get reactions in poll form...if you can, do pimp it out...

Book 7 reaction poll - obviously with spoilers )

Deathly Hollows: the thoughts at the forefront

Alrighty, now that the last book is next to my laptop...I think I'm going to go to sleep soon.

I was kind of psyched to get the book - I mean, it's actually IN MY HANDS. And I planned to stay up and go through it. But. I've read it already. The book's pretty awesome - first half has great potential, the second half somewhat delivers on that and the epilogue I will always look back on with fond distaste. And since I've wrapped my head around the canon, I can go to sleep without feeling all weird.

I actually want to read comments and discuss the book - meta would be lovely. But I'm guessing that'll only happen tomorrow. So.

Will go to sleep in a bit, wake up and jump into the squee - and rants.

Oh! I will say a few things though, since I've been dying to yell about them for a while now...

*copies and pastes all those thoughts that ended up on notepad*

spoilery if you've yet to read the last damn book )

via [info]last5

And this time, I won't be squinting.

Y'all are free to spam me with spoilers and squees WHENEVER.

Jul. 19th, 2007

oye.

Normally I don't bother, but with all the recent HP!hysteria and the LJ! wank, I'd just like to remind y'all about something.

This is fandom. Fandom survives. No matter how many bureaucratic idiots try to stomp on us, no matter how much cannon joshes our fanon loves - we still pick ourselves up, find alternative hangouts and brilliant fanworks that far outshine canon in many, wonderful ways.

So calm down. E-mail your frustration to those in charge; save the rants for drumming up support to long term solutions and/or fandom!pr0n.

Whether LJ kicks us out or Harry kicks the bucket - does it really matter? It doesn't change what fandom is all about - sharing the pr0ny and indenial love.

*goes back to emptying apartment*
